    Are the panels server reliant? Or in other words if span’s servers went down rather just from age or because their power went out, would you still be able to control the panels?
    Ideally you want it to produce its own local server that you can connect to locally that way it’s never interruptible.

      asking the important questions!

    • @span_io
      @span_io Рік тому +22

      At this time, SPAN requires a working internet connection in order to interface with Panel. We are always evaluating new platforms and hope to offer an API for local control in the future, however, there is no set timeline for when or if this will become public. In the event that an internet connection is lost or unavailable, the SPAN Panel would continue to operate as a standard electrical panel built to comply with the safety standards of the National Electric Code.

    This technology doesn't seem to be very complex and hard to make but someone first had to come up with this idea. Good job.
    For me this shows that innovations do not have to be taken straight from sci-fi movie but can be relatively simple. As long as you have an idea, will and means to realize it, you can call yourself an inventor.

      Even if they have some kind of cell connection so you don't lose connectivity, maybe it's best if my entire home's power control doesn't go outside my home unless I need it to. Also, imagine if Span as a company shuts down. What happens then? Does your expensive circuit breaker just stop working?

    • @span_io
      @span_io Рік тому +1

      Today, SPAN does not have an open API for local control. Our users’ privacy and security is of the utmost importance. All communication pathways between devices connected to your SPAN panel and between the SPAN panel and the cloud are encrypted using industry-standard security protocol including TLS 1.2 and AES-256.

    The BEST thing about Span panels is the lack of a critical load panel. You get to decide what you want to power, then change to something else when you don't want that running. Example, you could have power to your kitchen so you could make dinner, change to your laundry area to run a load of wash, then switch to power in a bedroom or living room after turning off the power to the laundry area. That means that your backup power device may not have to supply as much power. It's dynamic!

    As an electrician and homeowner I love the idea of seeing real-time data and power consumption per breaker/circuit. As far as in-app control I don’t see a use case for that unless you’re on a battery backup system like in the video and need to be able to load manage on the fly. It’s a very niche product but really cool!

    I would like something like that, however what happens when they go out of business or the cloud app gets hacked? From both a person that has seen cool companies come and go, and the way technology evolves, how long will it be until they are obsoleted and no longer supported, cloud servers go away or manufacture stops supporting it? Home infrastructure have to be careful with leading edge when it needs to be good for 25 or more years as most panels don't get changed out until way later in life. 🤠

    Well, in South Africa, there is load shedding. Load shedding is where the country does not have power for a certain time daily. If you want to have power during this, you can use a generator or solar power. If you get solar power then when the power goes off, solar power kicks in and your whole house will have power.

Mainly a couple plug in lights that stay on 24/7 with 1 led buld in each of them. which are in bathroom. so no reason to turn the overhead lights on. I do not even turn lights on in kitchen during the day and only at night then turn them off once done cooking. I have 1 Plug in light in Kitchen with led bulb. So if im going in there to get drink or something. Do not need to turn overhead lights on.
    My Electric bill ( no do not have solar panels or wind power) just from the grid. But My Electric bill per month is roughly $56.00 Last year My Total yearly cost was $630.

In comparison, I got a quote of $2K to install a new, conventional load center. This is insane! Who can afford to pay close to $20K for their home service panel? I would never recoup the cost even with time of use power consumption. I would rather spend $20K on additional LFP batteries. That way you don’t need to play around with programming backup circuits.

    I have two span panels. Span do not support two panels! They show up as seperate houses and you have to switch in the app. The second panel has to be wired up as a sub panel. This means you cannot have the powerwall will feed both panels but the only one span panel (the primary) will know that there is an outage. Span do not logically connect the panels. It also means that you cannot have "areas" that span span panels. This all means you have to plan what goes in each panel. The sub panel will get power but it will; not automatically turn off cuircits becasue it does not know there is a problem.
    btw span answer is that they will release a bigger panel some day.

    Nut does it work with Home Assistant? and if it doesn't, does it have an API so it can work with Home Assistant in the future?

    do americans have power outages often? I couldn't imagine doing this where I am because we have never had a power outage.

    Why the golf simulator is a must have for your span app? You really be golfing while others be praying for more power while you golf.

    Great videos and thanks for sharing. Would like to see Span integrate with more backup power options, such as Kohler Generators. I was unable to install solar due to not enough unobscured south facing roof space, so went with a Kohler Generator that has load shedding features to provide full home coverage in the event of long term outage during hurricanes and floods (Houston, TX here). I met with span prior to the install and they said they didn’t have any plans to do so. That’s disappointing, there’s a big opportunity to make an impact on a very large generator market.

      SPAN is compatible with all AC-coupled battery storage solutions and generators! Major generator brands that we are compatible with include: Generac, Kohler, Cummins, Honeywell, and more 👍

    Very cool but one question, pardon me if I simply missed it. But…CAN you plug in your Tesla vehicles and have them supplement the two battery wall things? Like having 4 power wall things or even more?

    Span is such a scam. You have to drill all entry holes. Way better to get Leviton rather than some startup that won't be around in a year.

      $4,500 for the SPAN Panel and costs the same to install as a standard electrical panel. Installation costs vary and are determined by your electrician 👍

    Probably cost way more then a natural gas generator. Which will run forever. 😂
