Are the panels server reliant? Or in other words if span’s servers went down rather just from age or because their power went out, would you still be able to control the panels?
Ideally you want it to produce its own local server that you can connect to locally that way it’s never interruptible.

At this time, SPAN requires a working internet connection in order to interface with Panel. We are always evaluating new platforms and hope to offer an API for local control in the future, however, there is no set timeline for when or if this will become public. In the event that an internet connection is lost or unavailable, the SPAN Panel would continue to operate as a standard electrical panel built to comply with the safety standards of the National Electric Code.

This technology doesn't seem to be very complex and hard to make but someone first had to come up with this idea. Good job.
For me this shows that innovations do not have to be taken straight from sci-fi movie but can be relatively simple. As long as you have an idea, will and means to realize it, you can call yourself an inventor.

The BEST thing about Span panels is the lack of a critical load panel. You get to decide what you want to power, then change to something else when you don't want that running. Example, you could have power to your kitchen so you could make dinner, change to your laundry area to run a load of wash, then switch to power in a bedroom or living room after turning off the power to the laundry area. That means that your backup power device may not have to supply as much power. It's dynamic!

As an electrician and homeowner I love the idea of seeing real-time data and power consumption per breaker/circuit. As far as in-app control I don’t see a use case for that unless you’re on a battery backup system like in the video and need to be able to load manage on the fly. It’s a very niche product but really cool!

I bet you have a home generator hooked up to your electric breaker . I always wanted that because we used to
have the power go out often. now we have a stand alone power generator hooked up to the transfer switch.
What do you think about EMP is that safe to put on your breaker switch . So it doesn't affect our breaker if
it get hit by EMP .

Well, in South Africa, there is load shedding. Load shedding is where the country does not have power for a certain time daily. If you want to have power during this, you can use a generator or solar power. If you get solar power then when the power goes off, solar power kicks in and your whole house will have power.

Today, SPAN does not have an open API for local control. Our users’ privacy and security is of the utmost importance. All communication pathways between devices connected to your SPAN panel and between the SPAN panel and the cloud are encrypted using industry-standard security protocol including TLS 1.2 and AES-256.

I have two span panels. Span do not support two panels! They show up as seperate houses and you have to switch in the app. The second panel has to be wired up as a sub panel. This means you cannot have the powerwall will feed both panels but the only one span panel (the primary) will know that there is an outage. Span do not logically connect the panels. It also means that you cannot have "areas" that span span panels. This all means you have to plan what goes in each panel. The sub panel will get power but it will; not automatically turn off cuircits becasue it does not know there is a problem.
btw span answer is that they will release a bigger panel some day.

From both a person that has seen cool companies come and go, and the way technology evolves, how long will it be until they are obsoleted and no longer supported, cloud servers go away or manufacture stops supporting it? Home infrastructure have to be careful with leading edge when it needs to be good for 25 or more years as most panels don't get changed out until way later in life. 🤠

I was unable to install solar due to not enough unobscured south facing roof space, so went with a Kohler Generator that has load shedding features to provide full home coverage in the event of long term outage during hurricanes and floods (Houston, TX here). I met with span prior to the install and they said they didn’t have any plans to do so. That’s disappointing, there’s a big opportunity to make an impact on a very large generator market.

Also, I believe they said the app shows each panel as it’s own island and they can’t link together yet, is that still the case?

It's a nice device, but I don't think it'll solve all of your energy problems on its own. Given your current setup, it may be possible to keep the lights on if your solar system is still working, and it provides enough power to run your home and recharge the Tesla Powerwalls. Otherwise, you're going to run out of power at some point during the day.
If you really want to make sure your power never goes out, you should invest in a backup generator. It can provide power and recharge your batteries when your solar panels aren't working. Of course, you might also want to look into increasing your storage capacity. Adding more Powerwalls would be a good idea.

i want it but the price is too high and the installation will also be high, I don't need that size Span and they only have one size panel currently, unless that has changed this week.?

If the power goes out. The internet might go out as well. Not all service providers provide backup power to all required areas for the user to connect.

In the case of an internet outage, SPAN automatically switches to a cellular backup connection when available.
The SPAN Panel will continue to operate according to its most recent settings even when home internet or cellular service are temporarily lost. The SPAN system will also continue to monitor the utility grid and transition into off-grid mode in the event of a power outage.
