Yet Tesla claims "Room for up to seven adults with optional third row". The problem is not just the space, but max payload for the car is only 402 kg. In practical use this is a car for 4 adults with some luggage.

I always wished the Model 3 was a hatchback so when the Y was announced that was the car I wanted to get. I have 2 girls and currently drive a CR-V so the Y is a definite upgrade that I’ll be looking to get.
3 looks more cool like a sports car and the model Y is more like a SUV I’m not an SUV guy model y A cheaper version of the model X and the model 3 is a cheaper version of the model S
The next consideration is, if you ever plan on camping in your car, the model y will be much more comfortable because you have that entire open area. No closed trunk. You can comfortably fit a good size mattress back there
Had both. My Y is by far the best value car Tesla makes. It has 85% of what my X had for half the price. Love sliding into the seat of the Y. Will never have a low car again. If you don't already have back problems, you will. With the 3, it feels like your butt is scraping v the ground. Also. Improved safety and visibility with the Y. Just personal preference. I predict the Y will be the #1 selling Tesla around the world.
My uncle switch from BMW 5 Series to SUV and he said exactly the opposite. Driving in an SUV he said he felt like he was not connected to the road - felt like sitting in a truck. He went back to sedans, so it's a matter of personal preference.
I prefer the look of the Model 3. The Model Y just looks too bulky although I guess I just don't really like SUVs/crossovers in general. I wish the Model 3 was a hatchback though. Exactly the same size but with a hatchback.
I really wanna put the seats down, lay down some blankets, park somewhere nice and just throw a movie on with snacks in the model Y. This is all I want to do

I’d chose the 3. It still has plenty of space and is way cheaper. Since the Y is pretty much identical to the 3 it just depends on how much space you need.
At first I wanted the model y my main reason was the extra space I thought that by getting the model y it would help with more space in the trunk and also make my knees a little bit more easier cuz I have a Toyota Camry and I always said I wanted a bigger car. But then I went and tried it out and actually compare them both I found myself liking the model 3 more the model 3s design felt a little bit better for me as i am a taller Driver where is the model y felt a little bit too high cuz I was already tall enough to. when I actually drove both cars and got a feel I found myself liking the model 3 the way it turns and the drive itself and just the feel of the car it didn't feel too small and it felt just perfect. there were two trunks already so I had a little bit more space by defualt so I can put a few more things in each department and last and most importantly is the extra 10 miles on the model three. For most people they don't really care but I usually take into consideration that if I'm going electric you're going to need as much length as you can and even though it's 10 miles for me that extra 10 miles can help get me to a charging station if I need it so for me I ended up settling with the model 3
I would like to see how the Y compares to the 3 range-wise in cold climates given the Y was upgraded with a more efficient heat pump system. It's the main difference I'd swap my 3 for one. My P3D looses 30% range in the cold. I'm sure TeslaBjorn will have charts up as soon as he gets his hands on one.
The 7-seat I’m actually surprised they don’t mount the seats backwards and have the 2 rear pax face backwards. It’d make a lot more sense from a space standpoint….
Thanks Jon and everyone for helping me decide. Once I decided I wanted the Long Range Model 3 vs the Standard Range, I had to seriously consider whether to spend the extra $3k on the Y. My 2021 M3 will be delivered within the next few weeks. I am sticking with my decision on the Model 3. I am single with a 5 year old, so there's enough room for us. I'm 5'10" and still pretty young so no issues getting in and out of a lower vehicle. I decided the fact that M3 now has a heat pump, along with the other 2021 updates, I would prefer to save the $3k and will opt for less cargo room and ground clearance, but longer range, quicker 0-60, and potentially better handling. Oh, and looks like visibility out of the rear window is pretty bad on the Y. (But the 1-piece panoramic roof is pretty awesome.)
100% go with the Y. You will need that space and the Y def has more. Esp in the trunk since it's a hatchback and also in the rear. Both are great cars, you will love it!
Waiting to get a VIN number emailed to me for my Model Y Performance. I’m used to a larger Acura MDX but miss the sporty feel of a car. Needless to say I’m so excited for it to be delivered since my test drive experience in a non performance model was mind blowing.
I ordered the 3 and it's supposed to arrive 11/22 or 1/23 so I'm super stoked. This must be an old video because the Y is not only 5K more than the 3, it's about 15K more!
Never been a fan of the basic look of a model 3 but after seeing the model y up close I believe it will be the most sold Tesla. It’s a crossover with a luxury outside appearance. Unfortunately Tesla did not improve the interior over the 3 but I heard that the y drives better. The two that were delivered still had gap and alignment issues. I think I will wait for year two on the model y or the new MS.
Yeah lemme just take my brand new Tesla literally anywhere that I need more ground clearance than a Honda accord. Also with range anxiety still a problem lower ground clearance generally means better aerodynamics meaning longer range.
I have the Model 3 and I’m driving for me, myself and I (aka I’m single). 😂 The 3 is plenty big enough for me, the only thing I really like on the Y that I wish was in the 3 is being able to open and close the trunk automatically. Great video though as it was nice seeing the differences. 😊
@@MrStarLicker yep third party, there is a local Tesla group and multiple Tesla owners had it done for there trunk and frunk. There are a few shops here that will do it and it's fairly cheap. I would call some custom shops around you area and see
Two things I wish Tesla would do Hope they have adjustable headrest. Headrest being pushed little forward make people to have turtle neck which is not good for your neck and it will eventually cause neck issues. I hope they make Tesla drive little more smoother. Then I will buy it.
The barrel for lots potential buyers for model Y is the federal EV rebate in Canada. Right now only model 3 standard range can be qualified for this program.

I was assuming that he was going to do a comparison between the two models, but ended up showing mainly the Model Y and describing the difference to the Model 3.
Everyone always acts like everyone can choose anything... If you are a big person then the size of the vehicle is necessary to be comfortable. I cannot fit in as Model S not enough headroom. The Model 3 just barely with ducking and a little tight inside. I am sure the Model Y will be perfect more headroom than my current car and more shoulder room too. I wish I could choose whatever I wanted no matter what and fit in it....Even if I could....I would pick the model Y. it is the most practical Tesla for the money.
I think the third row will be better than most people think. You butt will be down into where the compartment is on the 5 -seater for more headroom and your feet can go under the 2nd row.
Make model 3 a hatchback, and i would go for that, other thing i have with the 3 is that you sit on display, you can actually just see it now just looking on the two cars. you see almost most of the driver seat, while on the Y you do not. So ill actually pick a used S, sorry.
I don't get the Model Y. It literally looks like a lifted Model 3. If you told a non-car dude to tell you the difference between the Model Y and 3 from the outside, they'll just say one looks like it has a aftermarket lift kit and the other one doesn't. Which begs the question: why have two of these cars in production? Keep one. They could've done minor stuff like headlights and taillights changes but nope.
The Model Y should have gotten the 18" wheels for even better range. I can't stand the 21" wheels with low profile tires that are flat prone. But I'd take the Model Y "Stealth" Performance, because I don't want a lowered car with bigger wheels.
For an SUV-killer, they should have extended the roof line horizontally more like a traditional SUV. That would have resulted in more usable cubic footage and better headroom for any truly usable third-row seating. (Do people really like those recent Tesla "performance wheel" designs? I think they're the worst visual design part of the cars now.)
Saving up for the mode Y. Question for Tesla owners in California. How much are u paying for insurance? Can’t seem to find anything on google. Someone I know said he’s paying $300/month which I thought was so much.
Minor gripe here but your review is contingent on being super familiar with what the Model 3 offers. Maybe I’m the minority here but I don’t own either and I’m trying to figure out which one to get and I really don’t get a good feel for what the back seat size of the 3 is, only that it’s less than what’s shown in the video, ya know? The video is for 3 owners and you. Not for people who own neither.
Nobody mentions this but, the performance Y has an 8 Year / 125,000 Mile warranty! Best in class by about 2x the number of years, and up to 3x the number of miles.
The model y performance 2023 is less than 1k difference than the 3 perf in most configurations. Why get a 3? IMO the 3 long range or the y performance are the best bang for the buck performers.
Wait everyone. I really don't understand why we need a lot of discussions about y, 3, y or 3 🤔. The Y is the SUV version of 3 with more space and hatchback. So that is the unique reason of choice. For price, here in France, it's 10k € difference for long range
My short person complaint is that the Teslas don’t have an adjustable seatbelt attachment point on the B pillar so the seatbelt cuts into my neck. It’s a feature that’s been around for twenty years. 🤨😠
I have done 140,000 km in a x75D with costs and breakdowns that I have never seen in other cars, hardly leaving the guarantee of 80,000 km. I have had more than € 30,000 expenses in the last 60,000km. I just sell this terrific car to an adept of the Tesla sect with a loss of 70% of its initial value (No one wants it out of warranty). The worst investment !!! I'm never going to be fooled like this again by marketing (very very good from Tesla, and from his UA-camrs assistants ...) Good luck to the poors owners of model 3 who will spends days in the technical service 😰🤑🤑🤮🤮 Don’t listen people who says no maintenance or cheap maintenance: Tesla is a big trap !!

the falcon doors are actualy useful in certain situations, they adapt the way they open up based on the aviable space... and are cool looking, but i guess this depends on personal taste.
I just don't see why this is considered a CUV...its seems more along the lines of a Hatchback than say a Mazda CX-5. Its only like 1 inch higher in ground clearance and 10 ft^3 more space than a GTI...
One thing I hate about SUV-ized version of cars is how there is less longitudinal leg room and it they raise the seat.... So it's less like a poolside chair and more like a kitchen table chair. I have long legs and I like the lawn chair. Do the Model Y seats have the same longitudinal movement as the 3?
I appreciated your review, but you didn't demo the Model 3? Why not open the trunk and show us the difference? Show us the model 3 storage spaces. Also mention that with a Tesla lease, there isn't a buyback option. It's more like a rental.
Look at the door panels at 0:37, they don't line up very well. Like the Model 3, it's probably wise to wait until Tesla improves the build quality before you buy one.
I have a model 3 performance. I just test drove the model y performance. Pros: The model y is very spacious in the trunk because of the hatchback. Also love the full pano roof and the power trunk. It also comes with chrome delete as standard where as with the model 3, I had to have it installed. Cons: It doesn't handle or accelerate like the model 3, no track mode, it's more expensive, and it has less range. I also prefer the model 3's look. It just looks sportier and more proportioned but that's just my opinion. Overall, both are fantastic cars. If I had a family or a need for more space, I would go with the Y 100%. But since I don't have a family, I would go with the model 3 for that sportier look and more range and handling/acceleration. It also has more than enough adequate space for one or two people, probably even one child as well. It's a win/win whichever route you go :)
@@MrStarLicker yep you can, so many people get it done. It usually runs around $800-1000 to get it completely done. If you're pretty handy, id say you could prob install it yourself. Had a friend who did it on his own and it came out real nice (Nikola chrome delete kit)
The paint on the blue egg is horrific - it is thin - has a lot of orange peel - that is quality that people in the 1970's would have complained about. Visibility out the back is awful - huge blind spot and the tiny c pillar window does nothing to help. Of course this doesn't matter to Tesla people who put their trust on cameras and force the rest of us to prevent the actual accidents. Interior looks low rent for a car approaching $60k in cost. I can't believe the low level of quality that luxury golf car owners tolerate in this brand. This level of quality control is what drove people to Japanese cars in the 1980's. Even Detroit then built better vehicles right off the assembly line. I understand the allure of electric vehicles - Tesla builds some of the worst vehicles EVER built with assembly and paint quality - they have not improved one bit as this example proves.
Tesla delivering model y ahead of time was good but I don’t think of it as some sort of achievement. This car shares most of the hardware from model 3 so it’s like taking what you have a upgrade it. If they manage to deliver cybertruck at this speed is when we can call it an achievement.
The performance upgrade 21” tyres - do they serve only as eyecandy; tvey just look good and cause a decrease in range - and cost more? So get them only ig the look of the car is very important to you….(?)

I only recently discovered the Model 3 wasn't a hatchback. For me and much of the rest of Europe, this will be a deal-breaker.
The Y is also slightly higher than the 3. So the Y is more practical if you have an uneven driveway and don’t want to bottom out.

AC is technically a heat pump... just in reverse
It’s not new. Toyota fitted reversible A/C way back in the 1980s. It gave hot air within seconds so cold starts did not result in steamed up windows.

Sam Clark the Y has less rear hip room compared to the 3 by almost 2”. I have the 3 with 3 small kids and it’s borderline tight

I was assuming that he was going to do a comparison between the two models, but ended up showing mainly the Model Y and describing the difference to the Model 3.
Everyone always acts like everyone can choose anything... If you are a big person then the size of the vehicle is necessary to be comfortable. I cannot fit in as Model S not enough headroom. The Model 3 just barely with ducking and a little tight inside. I am sure the Model Y will be perfect more headroom than my current car and more shoulder room too. I wish I could choose whatever I wanted no matter what and fit in it....Even if I could....I would pick the model Y. it is the most practical Tesla for the money.
I think the third row will be better than most people think. You butt will be down into where the compartment is on the 5 -seater for more headroom and your feet can go under the 2nd row.
Make model 3 a hatchback, and i would go for that, other thing i have with the 3 is that you sit on display, you can actually just see it now just looking on the two cars. you see almost most of the driver seat, while on the Y you do not.
So ill actually pick a used S, sorry.
I don't get the Model Y. It literally looks like a lifted Model 3. If you told a non-car dude to tell you the difference between the Model Y and 3 from the outside, they'll just say one looks like it has a aftermarket lift kit and the other one doesn't.
Which begs the question: why have two of these cars in production? Keep one. They could've done minor stuff like headlights and taillights changes but nope.
The Model Y should have gotten the 18" wheels for even better range. I can't stand the 21" wheels with low profile tires that are flat prone. But I'd take the Model Y "Stealth" Performance, because I don't want a lowered car with bigger wheels.
For an SUV-killer, they should have extended the roof line horizontally more like a traditional SUV. That would have resulted in more usable cubic footage and better headroom for any truly usable third-row seating.
(Do people really like those recent Tesla "performance wheel" designs? I think they're the worst visual design part of the cars now.)
model y for sure, I bought model 3 last year because of the federal credit was phasing out plus I never expected model y to be released this early.
i really doubt the Y will have issues like the 3 did considering the Y is like 75% the same parts as the 3.

Saving up for the mode Y. Question for Tesla owners in California. How much are u paying for insurance? Can’t seem to find anything on google. Someone I know said he’s paying $300/month which I thought was so much.

Minor gripe here but your review is contingent on being super familiar with what the Model 3 offers. Maybe I’m the minority here but I don’t own either and I’m trying to figure out which one to get and I really don’t get a good feel for what the back seat size of the 3 is, only that it’s less than what’s shown in the video, ya know?

Best in class by about 2x the number of years, and up to 3x the number of miles.
umm dunno where u got Your figures from, but according to TESLAS website, the dual motor has a 0-60 of 3.7 seconds, not 4.8.
The model y performance 2023 is less than 1k difference than the 3 perf in most configurations. Why get a 3? IMO the 3 long range or the y performance are the best bang for the buck performers.
Wait everyone. I really don't understand why we need a lot of discussions about y, 3, y or 3 🤔. The Y is the SUV version of 3 with more space and hatchback. So that is the unique reason of choice.

My short person complaint is that the Teslas don’t have an adjustable seatbelt attachment point on the B pillar so the seatbelt cuts into my neck. It’s a feature that’s been around for twenty years. 🤨😠
I have done 140,000 km in a x75D with costs and breakdowns that I have never seen in other cars, hardly leaving the guarantee of 80,000 km.
I have had more than € 30,000 expenses in the last 60,000km.
I just sell this terrific car to an adept of the Tesla sect with a loss of 70% of its initial value (No one wants it out of warranty). The worst investment !!!

the falcon doors are actualy useful in certain situations, they adapt the way they open up based on the aviable space... and are cool looking, but i guess this depends on personal taste.

I just don't see why this is considered a CUV...its seems more along the lines of a Hatchback than say a Mazda CX-5. Its only like 1 inch higher in ground clearance and 10 ft^3 more space than a GTI...
One thing I hate about SUV-ized version of cars is how there is less longitudinal leg room and it they raise the seat.... So it's less like a poolside chair and more like a kitchen table chair. I have long legs and I like the lawn chair. Do the Model Y seats have the same longitudinal movement as the 3?
I appreciated your review, but you didn't demo the Model 3? Why not open the trunk and show us the difference? Show us the model 3 storage spaces. Also mention that with a Tesla lease, there isn't a buyback option. It's more like a rental.

you may lose range but you have the heat pump which saves you range when you have to warm up the battery or the car
I have a model 3 performance. I just test drove the model y performance.
Pros: The model y is very spacious in the trunk because of the hatchback. Also love the full pano roof and the power trunk. It also comes with chrome delete as standard where as with the model 3, I had to have it installed.
Cons: It doesn't handle or accelerate like the model 3, no track mode, it's more expensive, and it has less range. I also prefer the model 3's look. It just looks sportier and more proportioned but that's just my opinion.
Overall, both are fantastic cars. If I had a family or a need for more space, I would go with the Y 100%. But since I don't have a family, I would go with the model 3 for that sportier look and more range and handling/acceleration. It also has more than enough adequate space for one or two people, probably even one child as well.
It's a win/win whichever route you go :)

@@MrStarLicker yep you can, so many people get it done. It usually runs around $800-1000 to get it completely done. If you're pretty handy, id say you could prob install it yourself. Had a friend who did it on his own and it came out real nice (Nikola chrome delete kit)

The paint on the blue egg is horrific - it is thin - has a lot of orange peel - that is quality that people in the 1970's would have complained about. Visibility out the back is awful - huge blind spot and the tiny c pillar window does nothing to help. Of course this doesn't matter to Tesla people who put their trust on cameras and force the rest of us to prevent the actual accidents. Interior looks low rent for a car approaching $60k in cost. I can't believe the low level of quality that luxury golf car owners tolerate in this brand. This level of quality control is what drove people to Japanese cars in the 1980's. Even Detroit then built better vehicles right off the assembly line. I understand the allure of electric vehicles - Tesla builds some of the worst vehicles EVER built with assembly and paint quality - they have not improved one bit as this example proves.

Tesla delivering model y ahead of time was good but I don’t think of it as some sort of achievement. This car shares most of the hardware from model 3 so it’s like taking what you have a upgrade it. If they manage to deliver cybertruck at this speed is when we can call it an achievement.
