That's interesting because i also play fast only downpicking and only using the wrist and never the entire arm (playing Thrash, Death and Punk) Everytime i tried to play down and up it was a mess. But playing Black Metal or Grind is easy to down and uppicking because is a different way of play.
Try to get comfortable and neat at a speed you like, then just push harder at slightly higher tempos with a metronome or drum machine. Then try the other way around. Play at uncomfortable tempos, then bring it down to what your good with. Do this for at least an hour a day and just keep pushing. Think like an athlete. Keep pushing. Happy practicing!

Hey so I’ve been working on my down picking speed. Do you angle your pick or hit the strings flat? Also what’s the best way to approach the down stroke I find a lot of the time I get a bit under my strings.
Ok it’s always on an angle but try making a small oval movement going down and outwards. Also try and hold the pick closer to the tip. You’ll see what I mean when you get a better feel for it.
Playing everyday of course, and finding the right angle of your wrist, holding the pick closer to the tip, controlling your breathing, pushing your practice past your limit, there’s a lot more than meets the eye.

The trick is to downpick with your entire arm and make sure it’s as tense as possible. Also hold your breath while downpicking. It helps .
Are you sure? I'm no expert, but I feel like you shouldn't use your whole arm and try not to tense up
