An Ancient Portal to Another Dimension and The Mysterious Green Children of 1173

- The harvest had come to Woolpit, a small village in the countryside of Suffolk, England. In the dappled light of one late summer in the 12th century, reapers worked the fields near the ancient wolf-trapping pits from which the village took its name.
But on this particular day, their work halted as an extraordinary sight emerged from the shadows of one such pit: two children-skin tinged a peculiar shade of green and dressed in strange, unfamiliar clothes.
Unable to communicate in any language the villagers understood, the children seemed bewildered and lost. According to William of Newburgh, the chronicler who first recorded the tale, the harvesters, unsure of what else to do, seized the children and brought them into the village.
In a separate account by Ralph of Coggeshall, a knight by the name of Sir Richard de Calne intervened. Moved by the strange sight, he took the children to his manor, where they were treated with great care.
Both chroniclers noted that the children refused food for days, leaving their caretakers anxious. No bread, no fruit, no cooked meals could tempt them. It seemed their fate was sealed by starvation until one day, raw beans were placed before them.
The children, at first mistaking the bean stalks for the edible portion, wept when they found no food inside. Eventually, the beans were shelled, and the children devoured them eagerly.
Time passed, and the children slowly adapted. They learned the language of the people around them, and their green skin faded to the natural tones of the English countryside. But the boy, frail from the start, did not live long after being baptized.
The girl, however, grew stronger. Ralph of Coggeshall described her as sharp-witted, though possessing a wildness that some found troubling. He wrote that she was, quote, “very wanton and impudent” as she matured.
Despite this, she integrated into Sir Richard de Calne’s household and eventually married a man from the town of King’s Lynn, where she lived out her days in relative normalcy-or as normal as one might expect after such a strange beginning.
But it wasn’t the children's physical appearance that intrigued the villagers most-it was the story they eventually told. After learning English, the girl spoke of coming from a place called St. Martin’s Land, a country where the sun never fully rose.
They lived in a kind of permanent twilight, she said, in a land that shimmered green. How they arrived in Woolpit was a mystery even to them.
She recounted that they had been herding their father’s cattle when a sound like distant church bells drew them into a cave. Wandering in the darkness, they found themselves lost, until they finally stumbled into the bright light of a world they had never known. When they tried to return to the cave, they found no trace of the entrance, as though it had disappeared from the earth altogether.
The villagers were left with more questions than answers. Who were these children? Where had they come from? And perhaps most unsettling-what had they left behind?
I might be reading too many strange medieval chronicles lately... Here's a closer look at the true history behind the mysterious (and well-documented) Green Children of Woolpit.
Currently reading "A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century" by Barbara Tuchman. Highly interesting and recommended, but be ready for some very dense history in the intro to set things up...
You can never read too many book. It opens up your mind especially medieval stories. I love Books. Hi from Ireland ❤
Every piece you make and share is a treasure 💥💯
The music is too loud, I couldn't hear the narration
read the forbidden book Alien Psyop, and you'll see the secrets they're keeping from us.
This is the first time I've heard of the Flemish theory, and it makes a TON of sense. One of the things I'm most appreciative of with this channel is that yall get into the nitty gritty details and leave no stone unturned
You do at great job. I think you should do more for lost history. I appreciate Everything you do!!! ❤
And yet another great episode! ( the music was fine by the way) thanks for posting and looking forward to the next!
Bro please have mercy on my eardrums and lower the volume of the music... I love your channel its one of my favorite on youtube but the music is a little too loud.. Don't get offended please I can't be the only one who thinks the music is much too loud
There is this button that controls the volume. Try that instead of complaining.
This was even MORE intriguing than usual--which means a fair amount, in D5 context...
It's like a historical tale of shrek with a non-synth John Carpenter score.
Well done--still impressive as always. :)
I guess I’m getting old, I don’t care to watch a few of my favorite channels anymore bc of all the repetitive A.I. images and videos.
you're definitely just getting old
No you’re not just getting old. The lack of an actual human behind the voice is palpable. Plus the monotone delivery and often saying the exact same thing a dozen ways. It actually amazes me how many folks actually like it.
Sounds like a you problem.
@@MidMo4020 Are you saying this isn’t just normal narration?
@@OneTonDolphin I agree with you
I've been watching this channel since the first upload. This one of your best mini-docs yet, as usual though an incredibly detailed retelling. Thanks for your content dark5
Nice story, but the music was to loud for me.
The music made it hard to hear you clearly.

The medieval folks were famous for telling tall tales and adding a lot of imaginative details to mundane situations all the time. This was a time before TV, radio and internet, so they had to entertain themselves somehow. 😉
The modern people are famous for believe in fake news, so you are not too much smarter than them
How about people believe comics are true
Thank you D5 for doing a UK based mystery, respect from Manchester ..... :)
I strongly wish youd dive into the Roanoke mystery id love a video on that so much especially by you
Narration is excellent, research is excellent...thank you
I live in Woolpit and used to live in rougham. I believe they came from the "Rougham mirage" (worth a google) less than 10 miles away. Green bricks have been found in the field when the mansion is seen. I'm just connecting the dots ....
Background music way too loud! Great stories as always tho 👌 ❤
I appreciate your work so much Dark 5. With that said: the ‘’Background Music’’ was SO 🫨😵💫 it was hard to focus on your narration. I notice at times it seems the narrators level is switched w/ the supposed background music & that type of ‘’music’’ isn’t necessarily a calming effect when it’s SO LOUD. Lol.
It's a good story. One I've heard before and was looking forward to if only the audio didn't sound like someone speaking quietly from across the room while a music box played next to my ear. I know I'm getting older and have a harder time distinguishing between sounds, but could the audio person please tone down the background sound about forty decibels or so?
I've always wondered if the children came from Hy-Brasil. I love this tale. I'm just endlessly fascinated by it.
Your pronunciation never fails to impress me! In this case, well done for leaving the 'L' out of Suffolk!
this format really suits me
Nice to hear your voice. Always enjoy your content.
Woolpit moves around a bit. You did say at one point it was in Yorkshire. A slip of the tongue methinks unless The British Isles were a bit smaller then than they are now. Coggeshall is a nice, if somewhat strange, village so I'm not surprised Ranulph asserted the tale was true.
They be a bit odd in Suffolk, even now.....
really liked this video
I've been aware of this account for many years, I'm convinced these children were inner earth humans...
@occamsrazor9183 This conclusion is the polar opposite of your username, lol! 🤣
I too. Agree with you I heard this story many many years ago
So I usually listen to these while getting ready for work -- so maybe I missed it...when was the over the top AI that so many people are upset about? The only place that bothered me was the houses on fire shots, but I thought that was less AI and more of the looping of frames
Put the music down pls
Let this man edit his own video. Just watch the gd video
You people are insufferable. Get better earphones or something instead of complaining.
The music is waaaaay too loud, brother, can barely hear the narration
Nah it’s fine
Nope. Just fine.
Good visuals
AI
Great use of AI
Why does the person doing the voice over sound like Ace Combat 4 Shattered Skies narrator?
Girl was later married off and had the name Agnes Barre
That’s wild. My grandmother was an orphan near London, adopted by Renee Houston the actress in early Hollywood. Her birth mother was a woman named Mary Barre.
this video’s take really clicks with some of the things I've been reading in ebook Ailen Psyop from Borlest
The Why Files does a great vid on this subject.
I have never once heard that the girl was wanton and impudent. My guess she just didn't care for the local guys and they were offended.
No more AI.
Listen, when Art Bell used to delve into this stuff in the golden age of Coast to Coast AM, it was one thing. You'd be glued to it, as you lay there in the dark in the middle of the night. Food for the dark recesses of the mind. Two kids in a hole in the ground, let me just suggest, might have been two kids in a hole in the ground--because somebody put them there, then trotted off to the local brothel for some fornication and ale.
Did you do a video on this waaaay back ?

Ignore everyone's criticism of your use of AI, it's what makes your stories come alive, and it's the future, keep these coming.
The future?
You mean the end of human creativity and the demise of all things beautiful.
Agreed. As there is nothing but artistic depictions of this event anyway, I don’t see how using AI to help in telling the story is such an issue.
@@spiderlanewhich sums up the depth of your perception perfectly.
Keep it up!
All the shops in our town closed down and then slowly reopened as shoe shops and building societies….we all lost loads of weight - look on the brightside. Then a tesco was built outside of town where we could ALL buy our food…24/7
@@naradaian you ok mate? You seem to be losing touch with reality.
Humans end up somewhere else when they vanish...unless dying of shock, they live out Life as best they can...
5:52 stupid Flanders 😐
If Sylvester made a pact with the Devil, is he a Sly devil??
All tales from yesteryear are based on reality. The 1st hypothesis about the Flemish is very plausible especially during wartime. Shock to children make them recall events in their own remake of a child.
Yeah in an era when people thought the world was flat and witches and demons everywhere...
I like how reasonable it is that they were sick orphans from a land which commonly migrated to that region during a civil conflict. Yet the few things that dont fit get the tin foil heads freaking out with their fan fics.
best!!!
Obviously they were the offspring of the giant at the top of the beanstalk, who Jack boned.
No-one said the giant was male, it's just assumed, incorrectly.
G’day Dark, Trouble with these, similar, variations of a, basically, simple tale; are that none of them seem to have sufficient detail to take these theories any further.
Of course, there is enough recorded detail to have come up with the 12th Century tale of the Green Children of Woolpit. But what is this really?
I submit it’s just one of the possible ‘histories’ of this yarn.
If you replace the beans for sweets and chocolate then you’ve got another version of Hansel and Gretel, or something similar.
I’m a military historian so this isn’t my special area of interest, however, collectively, these variations suggest to me that they might have started as nothing more sinister than ‘campfire, or fireside, storytelling’.
This is why so many good, old stories that have no grounding in any one ‘real’ event, are passed around only because they are easily remembered and until electricity became widespread, storytelling (and singing) was about the only form of ‘mass’ entertainment.
The math on how stories like these grow is simple multiplication. A yarn told to six people is later told by the original six to other groups large and small in number. Before too much time has passed the story, possibly changing here and there, has swept through villages, towns and cities; or among travellers, as in the classic Canterbury Tales.
The most unexpected detail; that the children were green in colour, is the cornerstone of the tale and the rest of the details are open to changes, enhancements or exaggerations; like the children being discovered in a wolf pit.
I think each of the examples you’ve shown, in and of themselves, are insufficient to match the events with any well-established facts reported by multiple, reliable historians.
If this yarn began in recent years and was made into multiple successful movies, they would be known as the ‘Green Children of the Wolf’ franchise.
Finally, here’s something to think about; when aliens were referred to, in recent decades, and even today, the term, “Little green men...” pops up all over the world. Coincidence?
The children were small, green and spoke a language, ‘alien’ to the locals. Also, interestingly, no further mention of wolves apart from a hole in the ground.
Cheers, Bill H.
I dont see how the use of AI is any different than using actors and doing scene recreations in documentary style.
You can't tell the difference between something real and something artificial?
You might say artificial is real, sure maybe, but it's not natural.
I love dark5 and have been listening for years! But this AI..
IS FANTASTIC! Nicely done.
Any explanations from the pitch fork and torches people about why the use of AI in this case is bad will be appreciated
I love stories like this, but it's so far outside of the parameters of occult and UFO stuff that I know about, add to that the era it's coming from, and Idk wtf to make of it.
Whatever… The music is cool 😎
A word of caution & in response to those who say "AI is great coz it new shiny thing in'it". The usage of generative AI has been steamrolled in to every avenue it can to try & normalize the practice prior to any legislative process or legalities of its usage being clarified. Copyright has not ceased to exist overnight & is not automatically exempt if you happen to use AI.
Ditch the A.I. and the background music Please.
There is always a UFO theory. Always.
Like the creepy content. Cool video
They were Polish. There is a condition that can turn skin green.
Please stop with the AI, it’s not a good thing I promise:
The green kids are a easy case to solve you just have to think outside the box. They were the kids of the jolly green giant. Think about it they are green and they ate only beans. Boom case solved 😅
D'oh. Awww stupid Flanders.
They are from the hidden middle earth.
If anybody has 10 minutes worth of content that can be drawn from historical databases to replace the AI generated portions, you all need to quit complaining.
Always eat your green beans kids
Ugh, even the pictures went A.i. what have you done to ruin your channel?
Real shame isn't it? Soon there will be nothing but "AI" slop on the interwebs...
No A.I.
I've always loved your work, but please ditch the AI.
You know there were many people from a long time ago who rejected that the sun was the center or our solar system, and those who rejected cars thinking that gas was from the Devil, and those who rejected Penicillin who said it was against God, and these people who reject AI give off the same vibes. It’s the future of everything. So accept it or get left behind like all those others were. Who needs Penicillin right? It was created by medieval BigPharma after all lol
Where is the AI?
Pay him then.
This is a good use of AI. It helps visualize what he's trying to narrate.
I like the AI. It's beautiful

So why have you lately drowned it in loud strange noises a loud “music”….. ?
Yeah dude get actors and film that shit bro ❤ love the content tho.
Your mix of background music was horribly distracting. The background music should barely be heard. I viewed this video to listen to a human voice, not annoying music!

I had brought the Children there with Tcktuglicktu, a friend, aboard our 'Black Dorito'. We turned on the striplight LEDs as our Dorito hovered the coastline, gave 'em a show. No harm came of it, a wonderful time was had by all. They wanted to "pretend they were herding their fathers cattle" with ancienters from Britain. Was just a weekend thing, kids get bored. No biggy.
