But for his contemporaries, there was something unsettling about Sylvester’s genius. In a world where the line between the divine and the diabolical was thin, rumors spread that his wisdom came not from God but from a more evil source.

It was a metaphor, in this case, it was likely a wealthy supporter, possibly a noble that was in trouble or a group of wealthy people that weren't allowed in the upper class at the time. Which things were done in this way so as not to bring imprisonment or exile or some other type of punishment for minor reasons.

I'm a life long devote Catholic and I freely admit the Church has made many mistakes but I believe our current Pope is doing his best to improve it. Hopefully our next Pope will do the same.
