People get too wrapped up in how "accurate" the data is from these cheaper analyzers. What they should be focusing on is how "consistent" the data is. The numbers are relative. If it's giving you a consistent data set then you can still see trends and improve your game. If you are looking to be a professional coach or set up a home simulator then of course you aren't going to rely on a $600 piece of equipment lol. If you are looking to improve your game, I think any of these launch monitors that fall in the $500-$600 range are great.
The only reason I want to buy one is to dial in my wedge distances. So the accuracy of the carry is extremely important. If it is consistently giving me inaccurate carry data I’m not sure how that is beneficial…
I love my R10. I set it up in my garage for night time and winter practice. I spent some time to really line it up & level it with my hitting mat and I’m very impressed for the money I spent. I find it works better with the E6 software included. The results are closer to reality. I’ve had it for 6 months now and love it for both practice and entertainment.
I love mine, not for the accuracy, which I know it doesn't have, but for the sheer fun of playing the Home Tee Hero simulator. Even if it constantly tags every shot at 1-2 clubs shorter, it's a blast to stand in the range with mates and play a virtual round. And that, as practice, is so much fun. Worth every penny
What’s your distance from unit to ball and ball to net or screen? I have 7 feet to ball 13 feet to net and my shots with exception of 3 wood/driver are within 3/5 yards from what I had my clubs gapped on track man
I’ve had mine for 7 months and love it. I already had a net for the backyard so this is a great practice add on. In Feb/Mar we had 6 weeks of torrential rain and no golf could be played. I took a promo deal on E6 and played courses all over the world twice a week in my garage! Even now our range is closed from the flooding so with the R10 I can still practice at home. It’s a commonly known issue that spin rates are off but I find distance and ball speed to be pretty accurate and have put it next to a Foresight X3 (radar) and its close on most metrics I am worried about.
First, Mark, thanks for all the videos. You are one of the few with a good understanding of different sources of variation and this makes you one of the most thoughtful and reliable reviewers. I'm a retired statistician, so the acknowledgement of uncertainty and dispersion in making reviews is important to me and should be important to everyone. I've had the R10 for around six months and kept it up to date with software updates. I already have the G80 and have previously tried iphone launch monitors such as shot vision. I bought the R10 for data on club angle, launch angle, spin, etc, to help me on the range. I've tested both also compared to a Trackman with the help of my coach. My experience is that the R10 doesn't offer anything much useful beyond the G80 or an iphone launch monitor. All deliver reasonable numbers on distance, ball speed, and club speed. Using your eyes too, this is pretty much most of what you need for assessing quality of strike. I found that the extra stats offered by the R10 were just too untrustworthy to be of any use, so if you are wanting to work on issues such as club face at impact, the R10 isn't reliably helpful. Actually, on the range the G80 is more reliable on distance for range balls for obvious reasons. Another difficulty with the R10 is that presently the data export facilities are extremely limited. Ideally one wants to download session data in order to explore patterns, but this is very difficult (so clunky that I don't bother) at present. I imagine Garmin will eventually upgrade its data export software and this will make the R10 much more useful. As such, the real question is whether the R10 is worth having in comparison to a far cheaper launch monitor. My judgement is that the extra data offered isn't reliably worthwhile. I do acknowledge that the R10 can be set up to sim golf courses and lots of people with home nets enjoy these extras. But if you are just using it at the range to help improve your game, I fear you will be disappointed.
My mate has one and we’ve compared it to my Quad. It’s decent on ball stats. He’s built a garden gazebo and the R10 comes with a basic E6 subscription. He’s been able to setup a home sim for around £1500 plus some donkey work. I wouldn’t have thought this possible a couple of years ago. Sim golf is a growing market and the R10 is great for entry level with a view to upgrading as finances allow. No putting unfortunately. His long game has improved on the course because he’s hitting balls and can react to a ball flight he doesn’t like. With his coaching he can feel when he’s moving back to his patterns and correct them at home.
I have one and it’s fantastic! There’s been recent updates that allows the use of RCT balls and the display is now full screen. I also have access to a Trackman and did a side by side comparison… the Garmin is slightly generous with yardage but everything else was incredibly similar.
Just to play the fairness card…. Do you think removing the packing film from the front the unit would assist the radar to give a more accurate reading? The bubbles in the plastic film could very well interfere with the units ability to read club/ball data.

I'm delighted with mine. I was also considering a Mevo+ but for the money the Garmin won out. I understand its limitations, especially when I'm trying to improve club-path and face-to-path, but I've been out in my garden every day. Also, I've already teed the boys up for golf nights on the Home Tee Hero simulator when the nights draw in.
If you get the device make sure to upgrade the firmware, use an alignment stick if possible with a stand and calibrate through the app shortly before hitting shots. Seems really accurate for me doing this.
Hi Mark, love your videos and your review. Need to point out though that the R10 does NOT actually track the flight of the ball beyond a few feet from contact... the rest is all algorithms and calculations so wind and other environmental factors are all irrelevant to the results that the R10 provides. For the average recreational golfer it's a decent unit to have fun with, but consideration needs to be given to the fact that the majority of data provided is "Calculated" and "Not Measured". With launch monitors, the more you pay, the more actual measured data you get. Keep the videos coming!!
@@richardgoodfellow8107 It can read spin on outdoor shots with extended ball flight. I don’t understand the point? GC quad and other image based launch monitors work exactly the same, using a different technical approach. They just read the initial flight and then calculate the rest. No one would say that QC quad is flawed, it’s just an approach. It’s really about the data it can generate being accurate, NOT how it generates the data per-say.

Got my R10 two days ago and have so far only tried it one range session. But it sure did it more enjoyable, and instead of hitting shot after shot going here and there with nothing but my memory as to have I have done, I get the numbers saved. For someone who can't afford a better launch monitor at the time, I'm happy I got it, and I think you got a point about that it will make me practice more. I've never been a fan practice short game shots like those you did at the end, but I think with the R10 I look forward to trying it out, especially since the distance seemed to be pretty accurate there. I look forward to getting to know it better, and make use of the information that is most accurate. I also look forward to playing a digital course with it on the range. Didn't think too much about that part before I bought it, but I'm curious to try that.
I bonded with you today Mark Crossfield when you brought out your phone and it looks exactly like mine, color, case everything! LOL. Subscribed now for life!
I’ve loved my R10 so far and bang for buck it’s great. Never expected perfection or even close to. My reason for getting it was I can practice every day in the garden for 45 minutes to an hour. Rather than once a week at the range where it’s a tenner a bucket! A net for £100, R10 for £500. That’s 2 months in the garden every day or 60 range sessions over a year and a bit. More practice more often and I can get a rough idea of where the ball will go and I can film my swing at the same time. It was a no brainer.
@@ottom333 I’ve never done chipping or pitching into a net with it in all honesty. They’re such feel shots that I prefer to practice them on those on the practice area
I've nearly pulled the trigger a few times on one of these but always stopped short. Now I'm working from home a lot I'm convinced I'd be in the garden 3 times week playing a practice round.
These are always intriguing since they’re getting more and more accessible. Thanks for the review Mark! Good to see where the tech has come along with this pretty thorough review.
I find my Garmin r10 is accurate, have a driving range marked out for distance with range finder and carry matches up. Club speed and ball speed match the other simulators I’ve used. A better comparison would be with trackman, radar vs radar. Lighting conditions don’t make a difference with radar. Spin rate is calculated and is ok with a large sample size. I was fighting a hook last season with my irons, with the garmin r10 I was able to correct. Actual on course flight straight now and fades are possible.
Yeah exactly. I feel like every comment that ever mentions inaccuracy are from people that don't take the time to calibrate and set it up properly. It takes some prep work and that prep pays off. It's not straight up plug and play. For the price too, come on
Hi Mark, thanks for the review. I have one and think it’s great for the money. Ball speed and launch angles are spot on (when aligned properly) everything else needs to be interpreted carefully. As a radar unit light does not impact the measurements.
It has a golf sim feature, that’s great fun with weekly tournaments, normally where the PGA tour is that week, and also links to 3rd party software. Shame you didn’t mention those features. I can say I have played Augusta! 😉
I use my R10 to get a idea of my distance and what club I should use. I also have it paired with my Samsung Android phone which is then screen shared on my large smart TV screen, looks great. When your talking about thousands of dollars difference for the sake of a few questionable yards of direction and you use it for fun and practice - I know why I have brought the R10. :)
I own the R10...love it, mainly purchased it to encourage practice, keep practice engaging as getting to a range every other night simply wasn't possible...I have to club up on the garmin app but, found it very close to top tracer when on the range. Also didn't expect it to be a GCQUAD 😅
Hi mark and coach. I have had the r10 since release well over a year ago. It is a great bit of kit for the price. Even better when you pair it with 3rd party apps like “awesome golf” or E6. I have seen it being improved over time with updates, and for the price it’s great for amateurs, especially at the range.
You need to try Home Tee Hero with the R10 and Awesome Golf. Chances are you can play the course you're on in Home Tee Hero. It makes the R10 well worth the price.
Get it set up with the E6 software and you have a very usable golf sim in your home. Big screen and projector and your away. When playing courses with your mates it's all relative.
I've been thinking about getting one since release, mostly for iron distances and a bit of fun on the sim with the kids. If the ball and club speed isn't too far off I'd be able to get a better idea of my distances than not using one. And it's more than 2 hours drive for me to get to a golf store with a quad.
I have one and been using it for a few months. It's not a Quad, but it's a nice convenient device to take to the range and track performance... for an FYI or for mapping my bag. It's "close enough" for its purpose and convenience.
I love mine. I'm a tinkerer and have a pretty good understanding of the swing. This enables me to show friends where they are going wrong. Especially Extreme cases of slice etc. It's an amazing back garden tool. If you love your golf, for the price is a no brainer for me.
I've noticed if you put elevation around 8000 I get much more accurate distances. Spin is a mess in my experience though as well. Great for indoor winter golf use here in iowa, although I think I will move to the sky Trac next year.
Save up a bit more and buy a Skytrak is my advice. Not sure if you guys have tried one but I thinks it’s great. Occasionally you can snap one up for less than £1500 and well worth it for the extra data you get. Still no club face data but ball data is great, particularly backspin, sidespin, launch angle and obviously carry etc g80 is probably as useful as the r10 with the advantage you can use it as a GPS on course.
Great content as always.....just one point i noticed at the end that the screen protector was still on. Would you think that may have some adverse effect on the data. Just a thought brah 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😊😊😊
Used one for a month, around 5 range sessions with 100 balls each time. I got a total of 100 to 150 shots that I could record data on. I get more data and am better at telling how my shots play by looking at the range target info, and where the ball ended up or flew. Sold mine and made a couple of quid on eBay, waiting now for a better budget iPhone based system in the next wee while.
I'm surprised it took you so long to test those. I bought a Flighscope Mevo+ a while back and could have used your advice. No regrets though.. I chose right in the end.
great review.....thanks. One of the metrics I am looking to fix w a launch monitor is Angle of Attack w Driver....curently and after 2 lessons, I average -5*.....not good. I am looking to buy a home launch monitor to measure this accurately and am wondering if u feel the R10 does this? I see the huge discrepancies re spin rates on most clubs w the R10 but am not sure if that is as criticl a metric for me? Also-are there other home launch monitors u would recommend other than the R10? Thanks.....love ur vids and always learn and laugh lots!
Be interesting to see a similar comparison with the Toptracer driving ranges. They’re good at encouraging the golfer to practice more but how accurate are they for gap testing etc? 🤔
I don’t care about any data as a beginner, all I want to know is does it accurately say if ball is going strait and distance within 10% for home practise with a net? Does it accurately detect miss hits and slices?
Hi Mark, Did you leave the protective film on the R10 screen and would this have any effect on the readings you got? Other comments that suggest better correlation with other systems. Think ing of buying this to set up basic home simulator.
I have one of the earlier Swing Caddie radar-based launch monitors. It works okay, but once the novelty wears off, it just sits on the shelf. I also got upset me when it told me my 7i carry was only 140 yards instead of the 150 yards I thought it carried!! LOL I think its best use case might be practicing different length pitch shots into a net.
Thanks for another great video both, I am currently looking at buying a home launch monitor and this is something I’ve considered, could you also do a comparison with the Rapsodo
I have the R10 and a Mevo. The R10 provides a lot more data and ball flight. You can also use the R10 as a simulator and play local courses. Pretty cool. Is it prefect, no. Is it worth saving $14,500, yes. Let’s be honest though. The $15000+ machines are not super accurate either. It’s probably right more often but it’s not gospel. I was at a scramble tournament and they had a $20,000 trackman setup on a long drive hole. They told use that the long drive was 350yds. I measured it with my Garmin watch and it was 310yds. It was a clear day with no wind.
Great stuff guys. What's your take using it on the range? Using range balls? And using the indoor features, i.e. the home tee & E6? I can see it being really useful with gapping your clubs, perhaps that hybrid can be replaced by a 7-wood, or do I need a 48-52-56-60 wedges, or 50-54-58, etc. Mine just came in today, see. So, I've got a few sessions planned at the range these next few weeks.
I think the biggest issue is people are expecting this to be on par with trackman and QC4 at 1/30th the price. Ordered mine and I'm mostly going to using it for club speed/ball speed, carry distance, and hopefully left/right dispersion. The other stuff I don't care a whole lot about.
I bought mine last year, only used it twice. It now sits in the garage. Is it worth taking to the practice range? I never knew if I was setting it up correctly either. I don’t have space indoors. I did buy a foldable net to use it but putting it up and down became a pain. Thanks
How much did the screen saver affect it I wonder? I've been looking at this device and wondering whether to buy, I have all the CT10 modules on top of my clubs and find the data captured by my watch invaluable and so did the pro when I had my lesson. Defo, it would make me practice more in the garden with my net - I already practice 2-3 times a week and then play on top of that. Thankfully you've not said anything to put me off buying one - I just need to save for it now. Thank you.
Its fairly easy to tell if you have the r10 lined up left or right after a few shots. Lined up well i find it does a darn good job. I even find the yardages mostly consistent. Lots of numbers are calculated just like trackman. Great practice tool, if you understand how to use it to your advantage. Nice to pair it with a laser.
@MarkCrossfield just like trackman in regards that they both use algorithms to come up with some of their numbers. Just not 20k. It's a good practice tool in the right hands.
What data is valuable to a 9 handicap golfer, swing path, clubs angle at impact, smash factor? I don’t think distance data will help me as i may use this with range balls . . . . Any pointers welcome
I think it's worth every penny tbh, you just need to remember that its not gonna be more accurate than the average golfer actually needs it to be. No amateur actually needs a number bang on accurate, +-6 yards as it claims, is just fine for 99.9% of people.
also-is there any launch monitor between the Garmin R10 and say the Mevo + in price that is more accurate than the R10? If u have tested something better than the R10, have u done a review of it and if yes, where can I view it? Thanks again.
Had the R10 for a minute but ended up selling it and getting a GC3. As you noted it was fine for some basic information, but it did not give me reliable enough information to help me improve my game. Plus I wanted the ability to build an indoor simulator to use in the off season. There is no comparison between the two units - including the price of course. That said I was impressed with the quality of the unit and had no problem selling it for around the same I paid. But I do love the GC3 !!!

How have you found it chipping / pitching into the net? for carry distance tests
@@ottom333 I’ve never done chipping or pitching into a net with it in all honesty. They’re such feel shots that I prefer to practice them on those on the practice area
For us amateurs, the key for me is distance. Making sure we know how far we hit it is key. That’s what I use mine for
I wonder if that screen film made any difference in the readings it gave you. Thanks for the good review Mark!
I'm saving up for one! They look awesome.
Does keeping the plastic screen on it effect the radar at all, or is the sensor(s) not covered by it?
Do you mean the Radar 😂
You need to try Home Tee Hero with the R10 and Awesome Golf. Chances are you can play the course you're on in Home Tee Hero. It makes the R10 well worth the price.
Happy Birthday, Mark.
Even if it's not the most accurate, as long as it's consistent in its readings you can glean a whole lot of helpful data from something like this
on the alignment there Is a cradle that helps with this and is fully adjustable so u get it lvl etc 👍🏻
It’s improved my game greatly because of my knowledge of each clubs distance. I’d definitely recommend it for that
I'm currently building a practice area at home and will be going with the r10. I don't think anything else comes close for the money
Does leaving the protective plastic film on the R10 affect spin rate reading?
Been looking at the Approach G80... I need to consider this now.
I think that this will be perfect for hitting into a net at home and working on distance consistency
Thank you gentlemen, much appreciated 👍
I have one and been using it for a few months. It's not a Quad, but it's a nice convenient device to take to the range and track performance... for an FYI or for mapping my bag. It's "close enough" for its purpose and convenience.
Love your videos thankyou , tell me you didn't use it without taking off the screen protector ..
I ordered one 6 months ago suppose to arrive next week...lol bought to use on my patio net.
I was thinking about this monitor. Thanks for the vid.
I love mine. I'm a tinkerer and have a pretty good understanding of the swing. This enables me to show friends where they are going wrong. Especially Extreme cases of slice etc. It's an amazing back garden tool. If you love your golf, for the price is a no brainer for me.
I'm look for a launch monitor, but going to save up a bit. Bushnell looks mint. A review of it would be great
Great shot Mark !
Still no club face data but ball data is great, particularly backspin, sidespin, launch angle and obviously carry etc g80 is probably as useful as the r10 with the advantage you can use it as a GPS on course.
do you think the plastic on the unit affected the readings?
Currently out of stock in Australia so ordered one from the states.
I've been thinking about one of these and yet again your video is great. I may go for a used one as this would be fun to use whilst practicing
Great video, Would this closer test if it was Trackman with human alignment issues?
great review.....thanks.
Just bought one for my garage set up
Be interesting to see a similar comparison with the Toptracer driving ranges. They’re good at encouraging the golfer to practice more but how accurate are they for gap testing etc? 🤔
I can unequivocally say that my approaches are improved by using the Garmin to learn my distances.
I don’t care about any data as a beginner, all I want to know is does it accurately say if ball is going strait and distance within 10% for home practise with a net? Does it accurately detect miss hits and slices?
Does the results still work the same hitting into a net? Like the shape and angle of shot. Fade or draw
thanks for the video, would the numbers be a little better if you took the protective cover off the face of the R10?
It looks like the protective plastic film is still on the device?
Love the tech…still a great ole game❤️
The R15 will have a laser for ball placement for sure! 😂
Did you not take the plastic cover off the front??? maybe that hurt the test a bit? lol Minute 19:18
Hi Mark, Did you leave the protective film on the R10 screen and would this have any effect on the readings you got? Other comments that suggest better correlation with other systems. Think ing of buying this to set up basic home simulator.
Loving mine. Go to the range and play home tee hero. Beat my mate at augusta last week haha. Quality device and 500 well spent
What's up dude
I have one of the earlier Swing Caddie radar-based launch monitors. It works okay, but once the novelty wears off, it just sits on the shelf. I also got upset me when it told me my 7i carry was only 140 yards instead of the 150 yards I thought it carried!! LOL
I think its best use case might be practicing different length pitch shots into a net.
Thanks
I'll buy both from ya
You can buy a stand to assist in line up. Also people add a metal spot (or small piece of metallic insulating tape) to improve accuracy.
Mark - does it gather path and face angles well enough to justify buying?
Would the type of ball you use? Would more items on the ball help with spinrate and other data?
I would buy it. I think Garmin makes quality products. Guy Canada 🇨🇦
Need to test it without the shipping protective film on it …..!
Looking at the details would this be a good item for purely working on wedge play to dial in carry numbers - so primarily wedge play
Thank you.
You missed the golf sim aspect of it, which is really cool. You can play many local courses on it
I love mine. Would agree that alignment is fiddly.
Great video how does it compare to the mevo flight scope as its a very similar price?
Would leaving the plastic screen protector on affect the accuracy of the device?
I'd like to know the answer to that question too.
Not an issue. Radar waves penetrate plastics quite easily, think of the nose cone on an airplane which protects the radar equipment.
Just like Trackman is a huge stretch. But I agree it’s a good little tool.
@MarkCrossfield just like trackman in regards that they both use algorithms to come up with some of their numbers. Just not 20k. It's a good practice tool in the right hands.
@@wconstructionco 👍👍
What data is valuable to a 9 handicap golfer, swing path, clubs angle at impact, smash factor? I don’t think distance data will help me as i may use this with range balls . . . . Any pointers welcome
Would it work better Mark if you took the plastic off the face of the unit?
I think it's worth every penny tbh, you just need to remember that its not gonna be more accurate than the average golfer actually needs it to be. No amateur actually needs a number bang on accurate, +-6 yards as it claims, is just fine for 99.9% of people.
Did you test with the plastic still on it? Would that make a difference?
Hmm, is that a protective plastic sheet cover over the radar?
I noticed you did not remove the plastic on the face of the Garmin, might that affect your numbers?
also-is there any launch monitor between the Garmin R10 and say the Mevo + in price that is more accurate than the R10? If u have tested something better than the R10, have u done a review of it and if yes, where can I view it? Thanks again.
Had the R10 for a minute but ended up selling it and getting a GC3. As you noted it was fine for some basic information, but it did not give me reliable enough information to help me improve my game. Plus I wanted the ability to build an indoor simulator to use in the off season. There is no comparison between the two units - including the price of course. That said I was impressed with the quality of the unit and had no problem selling it for around the same I paid. But I do love the GC3 !!!
