- The Telegraph's Christopher Hope travels to Wandsworth to investigate whether voters will keep the Conservatives in power in the local elections on 5th May. Wandsworth council has been in Tory hands for 44 years and has been a poster boy for Thatcherite policies, including low council tax and privatisations.

@@billgowland3250 or in Croydon or Nottingham's case, they mismanage the funds and the government has to bail them out, both of which are controlled by Labour.
Everyone knows what happens in Wandsworth - they all use Lambeth services (pools/sports complexes/cultural hubs etc) and then slip back to Wandsworth and enjoy hollowed out Wandsworth Council rates.
So true. Wandsworth doesn't support the arts and heritage like Lambeth. Their libraries have been gutted. All the festivals happen in Lambeth's parks not Wandsworth.
Funny they don't mention the massive amounts of money they get from the Tory government unlike the Labour councils !!!
@Mongo Lambeth's theatres, arts centres, libraries and the cultural programmes they create, nighttime economies, free festivals. Last year Wandsworth council withdrew funding to Battersea Arts Centre.

If our vote really mattered ,this country would run a lot better and then we would get rid of all the outside influences from the WEF and political parties following an almost identical strategy when it comes to running the country,it seems to me that political parties are on that path.
If we were thoroughly engaged in our local communities, we'd also know and elect people we know to be thoroughly engaged in our local regions. Factors affecting ability to get engaged are mainly around cost of putting and keeping a roof over our heads and time and effort to afford those costs. If ordinary people could cruise over core costs from one or 1.5 incomes, far more people, even with young families, could get active.
Voting is just a token gesture...............................................!
Those of us living in the borough knew that this was a long time coming. Tory complacency, poor quality services, unapologetic Brexit supporting councillors...it was no surprise. Govindia should have resigned in 2018 when he lost the popular vote, in fact a lot of the councillors should have resigned. New blood was needed many, many years ago.

Not all councils have the same income from business tax.
Posh areas have a lot of posh shops and businesses so collect more tax.
So people in rich boroughs pay less council tax than those in poor one.

@@julianshepherd2038 not true. I live in Hillingdon which is also Tory controlled. Not as affluent as Wandsworth, meaning fewer wealthy folk are paying the higher band of council tax, but it has lower council tax rates than Labour ran Brent and Harrow (which borders mine), and better facilties.

If someone normally votes Conservative I think it is beyond imbecilic to vote for Labour simply to punish one man. Everyone knew Labour were and are none electable along with the Libs so either carry on voting Conservative or go outside the LIB/LAB/CON altogether.
I don't trust any of these big 3 parties! Haven't done ever since I first became aware politically. And pains me that the top 2 of conservative and labour have the most leverage/power funded by wealthy outside investors, And backed by unelected lords. System needs shaking up badly! And a broader playing field created.
