  • Chesterfield in North East Derbyshire.
Since 1935 this constituency has been Labour red, until 2017, when it turned blue.
Mining, like the Labour Party used to be in the blood of this community, but the pits are long since closed and there’s a new political movement in town. Brexit.
It has one of the highest Leave votes in the country.
And its incumbent MP, Conservative Lee Rowley who co-chairs a Thatcherite think tank, well his aunt used to be Arthur Scargill’s secretary.
And that’s not even the tenth strangest thing about this election
We’re at the Grassmoor Working Men’s club for karaoke night, to find out why these voters left Labour, if they’re coming back in 2019 and maybe to sing a bit of Neil Diamond.

Heartbreaking listening to the man, hope the change he wants happens and more people listen to him. He's definitely a smart man for spotting the media bias!

smart, perceptive guy able to articulate things so well. As an ex-pat its hard to understand how a party that has trashed the country through austerity, and divided it through Brexit now looks set to get a huge majority.

Austerity has long been an EU policy. Google it. And the Tories were officially REMAINERS you numpty. Brexit is not a left/right thing otherwise Labour voters in the north wouldn't have voted Tory in 2019. The Tories just happened to be the ONLY major party who came out for democracy and pledged to Get Brexit Done.
      Think before you speak.

As a northerner this makes me very sad. The damage was done by the tories but Blair/Brown have a lot to answer for in not addressing these problems. I'm voting Labour to save the NHS but not with any great hope

      Blair/Brown thought a booming economy would bring the jobs back; they didn't understand that we had moved into the cybernetic age;
      making 500,000 cars in 1970 employed 150,000, in 2019 it employs 12,500.
In the industrial age community was built around the workplace; today it is built around hobbies.

The Other Bloody hell, where did you learn those stats? Are they true?

Thank you for thinking of the NHS and voting for labour. I really hope the north get the revitalisation it needs. Recent stats showed London is economically fine but maddeningly, the rest of the country is struggling after austerity. I'm lucky to live in the city with more job opportunities but I want the rest of the country to have these opportunities too. Labour's plans for free internet is being knocked by people here but it's important for businesses in this day and age...I really hope your area gets the revitalisation it needs

This is an excellent piece, nice to see ordinary people treated with respect and care. Oli’s interviewee Richard obviously cares so much about his community and is articulate and passionate. Please track him down and interview him again for the 2024 election!

The reasons for austerity, were triggered by Gordon Brown bailing the banks and the massive deficit that followed.
Before the financial crisis hit, Labour had sold the gold, raided pensions and racked up tens of £Billions in PFI debt.
In the 2010 election debates, all 3 main parties were arguing over who would deliver the most austerity, to deal with the huge deficit.
What they didn't tell us, is that if UK Gov didn't offer a coherent plan, the EU would have put crippling measures on UK, just as it has elsewhere in the EU, to Greece, Italy etc.

I was on the committee of Royal British Legion in Bognor Regis and we ended up closing. When I first called bingo in a British Legion we had over four hundred players; when we closed in Bognor it was about thirty players twice a week. I moved club and played darts for them but we recently left as it was costing us as a team over £500 a year. There will be no working people's clubs and few pubs the way things are going.

The only question I had was who voted for redistribution at the cost of debt then blame the bankers its those elected as there needs to be a balance in redistribution and taxes.

So can anyone explain to me why so many northerners, who claim to have been Labour supporters before, went and voted for the tories. This guy does in fact talk a lot of sense, what happened to the other people up north, I've been saying more or less the same thing for yrs. This makes me sad watching this, and knowing the tories are destroying this country for millions of people who are now struggling to survive

If Jeremy Corbyn had stuck to his anti EU principles and respected the referendum result, instead of pandering to the treacherous Remainers in his party, he might have won the election. He didn't.
