Yeah. Because if someone was to get hurt in a game that DIDN'T COUNT for nothing but pride, then that would be an issue. It's the greatest pick-up game in the world. Idc for it because I know they won't play seriously until the 4th quarter but kids love it and it's for charity so I'd let them have it.
Unless you wanna make it so the conference who wins gets home court advantage in the NBA finals. Or move the game until after the season as a consolation prize like they do with football lol.

Imagine seeing OKC vs Cavs, Spurs vs Warriors, Celtics vs Rockets, Timberwolves vs Washington. There'd literally be no bad match ups if we have the top 16 teams make the playoffs. That should've always been the way if we want to see the highest level of basketball played in the playoffs.. whether it be the first round to the Championship round.

The only way you're going to fix the problems growing out of super-teams and talent stacking is if the NBPA enacts a endorsement revenue sharing arrangement. Maybe not 100% of endorsements should be distributed, but a larger share of star ballplayers' money needs to come from the team if salary caps are going to be effective in promoting parity.

Top 14 make the playoffs (7 from each conference) and the last two spots are wild card where the top two teams of the remaining 16 make the playoffs. Then once the playoffs start you reseed the teams based on records in a 1-16 record and go that way. That keeps the conferences and markets competing but also levels out the playing field

You touched on the reasoning for the conferences to each have 12 people in the ASG. Money. It's because ownership of these various teams want to have at least one player in the game so that their product, which is the team on the floor, has more value. "Come see all-star Hassan Whiteside", when the Miami Heat overall will not be a great on-floor product without a possible marquee name attached.
My theory is that keeping Conferences around is mainly about keeping fans of small market teams invested (I'm not sure how well first or second round knockouts amid debate over whether they should even be there helps, but...). My ideal NBA has Top 16 in the Playoffs, 58 game seasons, and a drastically altered All-Star Showcase/Competition, but if the NBA wants to stubbornly insist on refusing to evolve they need to start incentivizing All-Stars to head East.
Conferences add another aspect of competition. Like in college if ur in a small conference you need to win it in order to make the tournament. In the NBA you need to win your conference to make the finals. It also adds the East vs West competition, not just cavs warriors or Celtics lakers. I'd like to keep conferences, but at the same time if the competition is any worse than it is now, we might have to get rid of them
They should have like a tournament like captains choose their teams and there’s 4 teams and winner takes on til the finals but that would kinda take the fun out of it

See, I've always thought the solution to the conference problem is to go the opposite direction like the MLB or NFL. Make the divisions matter with the winners of each division making the Playoffs with a wild card from each conference. The MLB and NFL Playoffs are so much more exciting because of that format.
If they did a best 16 team playoffs, Another problem is they would have to switch up regular season schedules cause teams in the east only see the Warriors and the other great West teams twice a year whereas the teams in the west see each at least 4 times. This is why the records are so close bc when u get to play the 76ers, nets, and Knicks 4 times a year that's already 12 wins for most teams in the east

Well said Dom. Well said. The only reason why LeBron makes the Finals every year is because the East literally has no competition. No hate, LeBron is an all time great, but there's a reason why LeBron has made the Finals 8 times and lost 5 of them. All the good teams are on the Western Conference.
At the end of the day, the east will be back in a few years. It's going to be trash for now, but the right draft picks and rebuild moves will bring those teams back. No need to jump the gun and get rid of conferences, it's going to be ridiculous when you have to travel coast to coast in a playoff series.

Isn't the point of the championship so that the team that won deserved it? How can you say you are "The best baketball team in the world" if you only ever play against your conference, except for the Finals?
AFC is very weak this year, and has been for a while.
I think they should keep conferences for scheduling and travel purposes, but just take the top 16 teams for the playoffs. That way you still have teams competing every night for that higher seed. Granted, until the east gets more talent, the best teams in the east will have a slight advantage considering they play more games against the east, but that also means that probably only a few eastern teams would make it anyways.

They should just do the 3 division winners, 3 wild cards from each conference, and 4 wild cards from the bottom 20 teams then just seed the 4 teams from the bottom 20 into either conference.

Without Conferences and Divisions, how would you make the schedule work? If you play every other team the same amount of times... it can only end up one of 3 ways. 1. play every team twice for only 58 games. I definitely don't see that. 2. Play every team 3x for 87 games. Not much different than what we have, but players are already complaining about the season being too much for them... 3. Play every team 4x for 116 games... That's out of the question...
The worst thing about present conference alignments is that New Orleans is in the Western Conference. Just take a look at an accurate map of the U.S.A. and you'll see why. If the Pelicans match up with any teams other than OKC, SPURS, MAVS, or HOU in the playoffs, the travel fatigue will defeat both teams. New Orleans mileage disadvantage is too much.
Top 24 could make it to where only players from one conference or mostly players from one conference would be there.
It worked for the WNBA to get rid of conferences in the playoffs, the two best teams faced off in the Finals and it was good series. I think it would of course be far more interesting if the NBA did this by having the best teams representing but I'm sure the west would have 10+ teams make it.

Well, I kinda agree about the 2014 Heat (but they played well before the Finals), but the 2015 Cavs went 34-9 in their last 43 games. They were better than Houston, LA and Memphis.

dom which teams do you think are the top 5 in the league right now? This is mine and some reasoning for the teams and why not the celtics.
5.okc(3 all stars but rest are a lot less solid)
4.rockets(2 all stars, have alright bench and team built around harden which is good)
3.spurs(1 all star that can play both offense and defense amazingly, good team in general because the system)
2.cavs(4 amazing players and imo the best bench in the league but lack def in general)
1.warriors(4 amazing players that play good def and good off and good bench)
okc:russ, pg and carmelo are really good players but don't have a good support (expect each other and maybe steven adams) to really contend with the other teams.
rockets:harden and chris paul really good and have a good bench to help them.
spurs: kawhi leonard is (imo) the 2nd best player in the league and 2nd best 2way player in the league right now and has good support to help him. they also have the best defense in the league imo but if kawhi gets injured (*Cough cough zaza) they don't really have any other options vs the 2 best teams in the league.
Note: i believe that 5-3 could change positions on the list depending on your preference and i, would be fine with it. I didn't put celtics on the top 5 because they don't have the chemistry together and (to me) don't have as many superstars as the top 5
or they do have as many (and even though their bench is great) their super stars aren't (this is from a kyrie fan) as complete of players as the ones on the teams in the top 5. And the reason spurs are top 5 and celtics aren't is that spurs have better def and a lot better chemistry (imo) because how their team is built and managed. And because i feel that the spurs would of beat or not have gotten swept by the warriors last season if kawhi didn't get injured.
cavs:lebron,love,wade and isaiah are all great offensive players but lack on def.(compared to the warriors)(except lebron the best player in the league)They have an amazing bench to go along with the starting 5.
warriors:have the 2nd best def and best offense in the league right now and, have a good bench with some amazing chemistry and 4 all stars that most teams can't defend.

I think it would suck but you gotta think of the other end of the playoffs. If they merged the conferences the west would have the better teams for the short run but then you'll see east teams getting better picks consistently and them improving through younger assets. I think it would take 5-10 years but it will balance out.

Perhaps they should consider, without getting rid of conferences alltogether, 8 teams from east and 8 from west in the playoffs and then make a top 16 play-off format with no regard for conferences, so west and east exists and are able to meet in first round
While I don't think conferences are good, one potential benefit is that they create rivalries between teams within conferences, and create rivalries between teams in different conferences, which the fans love because rivalry matches are more fun to watch, and they bring in more ticket sales
everyone complains that last year playoffs were the most boring playoffs in history, but if they just switched the format to doms ideas the playoffs would always be exciting could you imagine the 16th ranked team knocking out the first rank team? would be much better

The best of one group winning against the other group doesn't mean the other conference is already "better" than the other conference. It's not the top teams that define a conference's strength, it's the totality of it all. Just because you are open minded and the majority could be close minded means that you're "more correct".

I think the conference system is fair. The problem with Eastern conference teams are that they have less marketable teams and the weather in Western conference teams are much better. Teams in the East have been built off reputation, but the lifestyle in the West is very important in my opinion.

Solution... keep divisions and the 4 games teams in the same division play against each other. Keep a soft conference structure where teams in the same "conference" still play 3-4 games against each other. Keep 2 games played against teams on opposing "conferences." Just make it top 16 for the playoffs. This system is still flawed because it would allow a LeBron team to beat up on the east for a better record but it's better than the current playoff system.
What if the NBA did Northern vs Southern? I doubt they'd do that but itd be interesting if they did
