Miss Universe Drought-Breakers: Placements & Crowns TPN#49

- While nations are justifiably proud when they post consistently strong results year on year, the celebrations are arguably just as jubilant when a drought of some sort is broken. That could be a drought - or long period - between placements, or even crowns.
Countries with weaker sashes don’t have the luxury of high expectations and high visibility. Quite often excellent delegates are overlooked, when they might not be if they represented a nation with a stronger sash.
When those countries break through and make the semifinals, or better, it’s truly a great thing to witness. So, in honour of these record-setting, drought-breaking queens, here’s a look at the women who’ve made their countries proud with success, separated by decades.

The Pageant Nerd is the BEST channel for pageant trivias and information. This is very hard to beat as the level of research is so impressive. TPN is like Catriona Gray from Philippines wherein it's so hard to beat her overall performance in Miss Universe.
Thanks very much! I don’t recall ever being compared to the iconic Catriona Gray, but I’ll take it! Appreciate the very kind words 😘
@@PageantNerd you deserve it TPN! I have never seen any youtube channel that gives us these kind of entertainment and information about pageants. I am so impressed especially that I love trivias and data. I always see to it to watch your videos. Thank you so much TPN! More power to you. 👏👏👏
The best pageant page tbh. No drama, no over exaggeration, just facts❤️
that's when u distinguish a MAJOR pageant to minor 🤭
At Ang sarap pa ni daddy diba? charot
8:44 Indeed, After 42 years Philippines mined the victory. It was the best year when Pia took the crown to the Philippines that we Filipinos feted for Pia's confidently beautiful with a heart 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
1:09 I remember this moment in 2017 🥰 This was the year you could vote for someone on Twitter. We tried to get attention for Christina, Miss Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 but it was hard amongst sash factor countries. When she was called into the Top 16, we cried and screamed with joy 💖 that moment made our night. I hope for this moment again… this year rooting for Miss Angola 🇦🇴 Swelia, Miss Guatemala 🇬🇹 Ivana, Miss Brazil 🇧🇷 Mia, and Miss Cambodia 🇰🇭 Manita! Don’t get me wrong, I’ll be happy for any country to win, but I have a soft spot for the underdogs.
Malaysia has never been since I am born! I hope this will change next month! Go go Malaysia! Incredible video! Well done!
Malaysian Sandra Lim placed this year. More happy for you guys ❤❤
5:37 hopefully not. I’m hoping my country of Malaysia breaks their drought of currently 51 years
5:03 wow Really happy to see girls from our tiny nation making it to the semis and keep our flag high 🇱🇰❤️
I love the reaction of her supporters in the audience - so happy for her!
@@PageantNerd Thank you so much for mentioning her. ❤️Most of the content creators neglect contestants from small countries cuz they think they can't get more views by adding them rather contestants from major countries😐
Best pageant page, the narrator's voice is simply magical. The admin is pro in his R&D on MU topics.
Very kind of you to say… The narrator and admin (both me) thank you very much! 🥰🥰🥰
No one can beat The Bahamas. Joining this pageant since the very beginning and only placed in 2021
Wow! another interesting episode from TPN.
Can't believe you've gathered all of this details from more than 70 years of Miss Universe History.
Good work, Keep Up and More power to your channel.
Thank you, Chrismac - all the data entry took some time but it was worth it to see nice comments such as yours 🥰
Thanks!
Hard to believe I’ve been watching Miss Universe for 50+ years. Debbie Shelton was my dentist’s niece, and 1970 was the first year I watched. I didn’t pay too much attention after that until 1976, but have been watching since.
Although Im a Filipino and a real Miss Universe enthusiast, I really would like to see underrated and nonperforming countries be given the chances and opportunity this 2020s decade. I believe its long overdue for them now.
I hope we can still see in our lifetime Peru will going to win 2nd Miss Universe Title Crown after they won back in 1957.
I really thought Peru was going to do it in 2020, but hopefully soon!
Wow.
The amout of research that was put onto this.
Salute
11:24 a possibility for Honduras to place in 2022.
😢 I didn’t happen. I think MUO hates our country 🇭🇳
Yasssssss! This is my favourite topic! Love from Brisbane!!! My favourite MU was Angola because it was such a shock. I love it!
I like this content, I wish Pageant Nerd you would do Miss World and Miss International, drought breakers, victory gap, placement gap and country that didn't place
El Salvador's 26-year drought already ended in Miss Universe 2023!
Yes! I think it’s time I did an updated version of this video - what do you think?!
Always looking forward to your awesome content. 😘 Cant imagine the amount of time spent every time you make one.
Laos made the cut in 2022. I think it's the first time for this country.
Indeed it was! 🇱🇦♥️

Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 placed 2 times in miss universe 1955/ 2nd runner up % 2017 /Top 16 and last pacipating in 2018
Namibia & Chile's droughts also ended in Miss Universe 2023.
You're such a nerdy, the Pageant Nerd. and I love it
I really love your videos I wish you would do a video on each 5 of the top countries in the big six why they place at some and not at others and who are the other countries besides Puerto Rico India USA Philippines and Venezuela who can all conquer the big six and go into double digit numbers
THANK YOU FOR THE INFORMATION
All the hard work to publish this video. Another interesting but very nerdy video.😀

Nice compilations. Goodjob
Well done. Indeed a PAGEANT NERD.
yes enjoyed it.
I appreciate all the work you put into this video
Thanks very much - glad you enjoyed it!
Can you do a video on the same topics but on Miss World. Considering that at MW new countries place every year, it would be interesting to see some Nerdy facts!! 😅❤️. Lot's of love
Hey, you know what would make a great video? I know your main focus is on Miss Universe but at Miss World, there's been a phenomenon that has happened twice. Both India and Venezuela won many crowns in relatively short spans of times, but they also both had just 1 Miss World titleholder decades before their other victories (Venezuela 1955 ,India 1966,) and now that time has passed they both have one long after the rest (Venezuela 2011, India 2017.) Maybe you can do a video on what may cause the phenomenon and the circumstances surrounded the events, also what caused the early wins then the subsequent gaps etc. I just think it'll be interesting
That’s a great video idea - it’s true my main focus is MU but I do try and expand into other pageants here and there. Miss World would definitely be next on my list of pageants to cover. India and Venezuela arguably both came out of nowhere to string together some of the best stretches of success in MW (and MU for that matter). I think that would be really interesting to delve deeper into that - thanks for the suggestion. I’ll look into it! 😘
@@PageantNerd You're welcome 😊 ❤️
Please make a video of countries and territories that have never participated in MU but they do participate in other pageants.
Great Video!! But here I name some mistakes I found:
0:56 Nancy Soto made the top 10, not Top 15
3:25 I don't think England should be consider the same as Great Britain, since til 1989 three of the four constitutive nations of the UK competed completely separately (Scotland, Wales and England). And actually Great Britain's first placement as one solo nation was Amy Willerton. If that's the case, then we should consider 1980 and 1981 Tahiti's placements as French placements. Or Guadaloupe actually competed on last year Miss Universe, since Clemence Botino hails from there.
10:13 Actually Flora Coquerel posted on Instagram a few days after the finals (January 12, 2016), a picture holding a 3rd Runner-Up Crystal Trophy. So, although both 3rd and 4th RU placements weren't awarded during the final telecast, Flora was later awarded the 3rd Runner-Up placement
10:40 I believe the 90's Top 6 placements should also be considered as top 5 placements. Since they were also finalists. So The Netherlands last top 5/6 was 1992 Vivian Jansen and not the 1991 one. Same as Thailand's Gap between 1988 Victory and 2016 Chalita Suansane's Top 6 placement.
Greetings from 'the place where the richest coffee is found: Colombia!!'
3:25 MUO officially recognizes Great Britain as the successor "country" of England. It was flashed during the Top 16 announcement in Miss Universe 2017. Meanwhile, the previous appearances of Tahiti and Guadeloupe can't be merged with France since France had also competed against them during the years they participated. It's the same way that Hawaii's previous placements in MU before being a US state was not merged with USA.
10:13 As far as I know, the 3rd RU and 4th RU Crystal Trophies for MU 2015 were already made before MUO decided to have the Top 3 as the final cut. Monika Radulovic said in an interview or posted in a social media post (can't remember exactly) that MUO let her pick one of the 2 trophies. She was the first to pick before Flora. She was not able to see the writings of the trophy before getting it. So she got the 4th RU and the 3rd RU was given to Flora. There was no official statement from MUO about the actual rankings of the two ladies.
10:40 Yes, Top 5 and Top 6 should be considered in the same level of placements.
Without a doubt for me TPN is the best when I want to know the Facts !Congratulations for the excellent job you do !
You asked about something that we want to see ( for future videos ), I noticed that this video started with the 1984 opening number and you continued until 1995., now my Request is: How about you continue with 1996 through 2021 ? Just a wish.
Thanks
Thanks very much! Very kind of you to say. I’ll most definitely look to include more recent opening numbers in future clips - thanks for the suggestion. The reason I’ve typically stopped just before the Trump era is because the tone of the opening numbers changed at that time. In short, they were a little less cheesy and old fashioned - and I was a fan of the cheesy and old fashioned opening numbers! After that time sometimes there was choreography, sometimes there was just a bunch of walking around on stage with random arm movements, songs sometimes with vocals, usually without. In short, there was less consistency from one year to the next. I definitely loved a few of the Trump era opening numbers - 1998 in Hawaii, 2005 in Bangkok, 2010 in Vegas - and some since then. I’ll pull together some of my faves and get them ready for new clips. Thanks again, and happy holidays! 🥳
@@PageantNerd Happy Holidays to you too ! 😃👍🏻❤️
Yay another banger video
👋🙌🙌EXCELLENT JOB .. THANKS A LOT.. I AM LEARNING A LOT FROM YOUR VIDEOS.. WELL DONE💙❤
🇿🇦 As a South African I never thought we would win a crown again, but we did place and even had Top 3 after Margaret Gardiner, and after the ban. We were definitely an underdog for decades. But then came 2017 Demi-Leigh, then Tamaryn, then Zozi, then Lalela, and suddenly the world really took note of SA! We are doing well now, yes, to the point where other countries get bored with our placement and want to see new countries. I agree with that, and would love to see more African countries compete and break all sorts of droughts - Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, eSwatini. This year I think Angola and Mauritius have a chance to place and I'm rooting for them! I'm also rooting for Cambodia, Chile, Dom Rep, Jamaica, Curaçao, Panama, Jamaica, Malta, Iceland, Aruba, Perú, Vietnam, Belize, St Lucia (and more). These underdogs must just keep trying, one day they will place or even win a crown!
Excellent analysis as expected ❤
So true, so many countries had beautiful and intelligent delegates that were overlooked, Malaysia(Deborah), Malta(Valentina), Sri Lanka(Sabrina) even Honduras(Belgica) ,hopefully Honduras will not be overlooked this time..., she's stunning
Have you featured also countries that competed but never had any winner or placements as in even top 20? We want to know. Thankyou, and keep up the good work your contents are excellent.

How about The Bahamas and Chantel O'brien? Or did I miss it?
You didn’t miss it! I’d considered also including first time placements (e.g. The Bahamas in 2021 and Portugal in 2011) but the video was getting too long. I’d contained this video predominantly to gaps BETWEEN placements or crowns, with a quick mention of those looking for first time placements. Given I’d mentioned Chantel in my last video I’d opted to just go with next stats for this one, but indeed she was a big drought-breaker!
So proud of Nandita of SG. Fan from PH.
Peru is on a 65-year title drought.
It's sounds like a due time for them to win a new crown within the presence of Alessia Rovegno
I love the intro music can you tell which is it?
Love your content keep going 💓✨👑
Would love to see your video on era's of miss universe and your review on jkn era.
Thanks very much! The intro music is called “Gold Medal” by Sounds Like Sander. I got it from a royalty free subscription website. I’ve done a quick video on my initial thoughts about JKN (What’s ahead for Miss Universe under new ownership? TPN#47
ua-cam.com/video/bjOW_3rae4U/v-deo.html) and have referenced the Trump Era in some of my other videos, though I’m yet to do one on all the eras. Admittedly I don’t know about in-depth ownership of MU since 1952 but it’d be worth researching!
@@PageantNerd thanks
7:44 Ahh Canada 🇨🇦🥰 Fun fact, both of these queens attended Central High School in London, Ontario ❤ they’re both listed in the notable alumni from that school. I always watch to see if a contestant from Miss Universe Canada from London Ontario mentions that in her intro 😁 (they haven’t but still fun to look out for).

Wow you are so impressive
That Bophuthatswana is sounds like Bostwana that won in 1999 edition
Yes indeed… It was in fact part of South Africa, but along with Transkei were created as separate regions (or bantustans) during SA’s apartheid era.
Miss earth please!
Greece also break drought when Evelina Papantoniou got the almost title in 2001 she placed 1st Runner after 37 years when corinna tsopie won in 1964. and also philippines miriam quiambao almost got the title in 1999 26 years after margarita won in 1973. the top 2 moments
Yes indeed - as I mentioned that section wasn’t an exhaustive list, but those are very much incredible drought-breakers!
@@PageantNerd can you make the video miss world in this topic who's the drought breakers country.
Then again, in the Philippines' case, between Margie and Pia's wins, there have been a few placements and even some Top 5/6 moments (Miriam and Janine, of course, but also Charlene Gonzales, Chiqui Brosas, Desiree Verdadero, Geraldine Asis, Venus Raj, Shamcey Supsup, and Ara Arida). So not exactly, drought-breaking in terms of placing
Haiti 🇭🇹 placed 4 times in miss universe 1962/Top 15 ,1975 1st Runner Up, 2016,1st Runner Up & 2022/ Top 16!
This is probably the best analysis of the Miss Universe pageants held over the years. Sadly, you can see in recent years, the pageant gets monopolized by few countries for whatever reason. Sometimes you wander in the future there will only be those 15-20 countries will participate in the Miss Universe, and others will just boycott the whole pageant. In 2017, I can't believe what they did to go from top 16 to top 10. Correct me if I am wrong, I think only in that year they counted online votes to go from top 16 to top 10. What I saw there, the judges were determined to make their own selection. I strongly believe, the MU organization tried to make some changes after taking it from Trump. However, I believe the organization in 2017 got swamped and overtaken by just few countries that everyone knows about, that is out of line when it comes to beauty pageants, demanded the top 16 to count online votes fearing their countries will not make it to the top 10. That was totally unfair for a country such as Sri Lanka, cause the population is so small compared to other countries. I mean you can have just one with highest votes in the top 16, but to go from top 16 to top 10 use online votes and judges choices was totally ridiculous and outrageous. Countries like Sri Lanka are being ignored because of sash factor, only time will tell whether the new organization will make it better or worse for the Miss Universe pageant. Hope for the best, but let see what happens. I am glad Sri Lanka is hosting the Miss Tourism World pageant from December 8 - 20, 2022. This is what countries like Sri Lanka do to showcase what the country is capable of doing in the pageant world. Hope to see a great pageant and a show in Sri Lanka.
Venus Raj's placement will be iconic forever.
12:56 I see this placement happening 🇲🇹 So excited for Maxine, go Malta!
I think she have a good chance after last night’s preliminaries.
Miss universe 2018 Catriona gray Philippines

Indeed they did - an amazing drought-breaker!
The Number 15 is lucky for Miss USA.
Miss Universe 1980
Miss Universe 1995
Later won again in 1997. It took again 15 years to win at Miss Universe 2012.
Now that they won in 2022, by any chance will they win in 2037?
Hi TPN. It's been a long time since I stop doing trivia about Miss Universe and their delegates. Would you do a video about Miss Universe winners who compete in another international pageant before winning Miss Universe, like Mpule, Lara, and Catriona. etc.
I’ve indeed done some videos about crossover queens, mainly between MU and MW:

@@PageantNerd cool have yet to look at that. Will you be including Miss Intercontinental, Miss Earth etc? 😊
3:14 Unflattering Picture of Miss NICARAGUA Universe 1977. Can't believe she placed that year.
Yes unfortunately there were few photos of her on the internet to choose from!
Susmitha 1994 and Lara Duta 2000... From India....only 6 years gap.
Yes, that’s what I mentioned in the video. The 21-year gap is between Lara (2000) and Harnaaz (2021).
1:56 -- Interestingly, Polad again placed 3RU at MU's 1989 edition. So far they have yet to place higher other than their top 2018 top 20 placement. Noticeably though that the European delegation has somewhat been "lagging" behind in recent years as opposed to their dominant years from the 60s to 80s.
Europe placed frequently but struggled to win. After winning three times in the 1950s, they only win one or two times in each decade afterwards.
And Suriname
As far as I know, France got two fifth runner ups both in 2009 and 2012 but I would get that these weren’t considered since they technically didn’t make it to the final five.
Yeah, I was only counting official runner-up results. Chloé Mortaud (2009) is one of my fave MU contestants of all time, and not just from France!
Hopefully Ivana Batchelor from Guatemala can break their 11yr drought!
How about Korea? I think Korea is included in here because the placement they’ve got was i think in 1988 when Thailand won and 2007 when Japan won
Sorry, I’m not sure what your question is
How about the still Non-Winning Country Since they Joined MU????
If the Miss Universe 1952 in Long Beach, California was the resumption of Galveston, Texas's Miss Universe 1926 until 1935, TPN's trivia and statistics would have been very different. Austria won Miss Universe 1929. That would be a gap of 93 years quest for their 2nd Miss Universe crown😊😊😊
Austria, Egypt, Turkey and Belgium won the Galveston MU pageants but struggled to win the current version.
Hi, TPN ! Just like in your Countries That Never Placed Video, I'll give my prediction on who is most likely to break the placement drought....Germany's Soraya Kohlmann. Plus, of course, there's also the fact that Thailand has been doing great at MU in recent years, so they might end the crown drought soon.
Germany this year is super strong - she’s definitely a chance to end her country’s 20-year drought!
The next one is Miss Honduras 2022 Rebeca Rodriguez ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Since the new ownership is tinkering with the format (reportedly online voting) why not come up with the wildest of wild cards and support a "Never-placed nation" vote? Let the campaigning begin!
Great idea, Emil!
Not related but did you know the judge's scores from Miss Universe 2013 were actually published. However, instead of being televised as usual, this time the judge's results were published through the app "You Be The Judge". Here the public could participate online and evaluate each of the participants. And it was through this medium that Ariella Arida from the Philippines was the winner, obtaining a place in the Top 16. At the end of the actual ceromony viewers were able to get an exclusive look at the official 2013 MISS UNIVERSE finals judges’ scores. The thing is almost nobody knows about them. They're in Wikipedia btw.
That created a bit of controversy because that year the top 5 was determined by the averaging the swimsuit and gown scores while in previous years, it was the solely the score of the top 10 competition (swimsuit in 2003 to 2005, gowns afterwards) that determine the top 5, as a result, some contestants in past editions like Ireland was deemed robbed of a top 5 spot.
I'm curious about the real identity of Pageant Nerd. Does he have a Facebook and Instagram account? 😊
What about Sweden? Their last crown was in 1984.
Until they win another crown there is no drought broken. Indeed they haven’t confirmed an entrant into MU 2022. Their last placement was 2009, which wasn’t long enough to make that list.

Im still waiting for Turks and Caicos to make it to the semi finalist!

Ghana's first placement at Miss Universe was in 1999 and then their second and only placement was in 2017. The same with Nigeria. The first placement being 2001 and their second and only placement being 2019.
