      While essentially true, it unnecessarily stirs the already boiling pot of racial relations. The truth can be wielded as a healing balm . . . or as a club. And as has been said, Truth without love is just brutality.
      Racial tensions arose because of brutality. We are not going to heal them with more of the same. BOTH "sides" need to own their own stink. It becomes racism (or sexism?) when one side or the other won't admit that their own shit stinks.

    "MURDERER!" They yelled as the verdict was read.
    "RACISTS!" They said, to those who agreed with the verdict. But lets back track a little bit here. Colten had been drinking. That's a fact. The other people in the car had been drinking. That's a fact. They admitted to it. There was a loaded weapon in the vehicle. That's a fact. They had just come from a different farm, after stealing stuff from it. That's a fact. One person in the car tried to steal an ATV. That's a fact. The people in the car admitted to lying under oath. That's a fact. The others in the car admitted to attacking Stanley's wife. That's assault. A scuffle ensued, and due to some unfortunate circumstances, Colten paid the ultimate price, due to his own, and his friends, poor choices. Agreeing with the verdict, doesn't make me a racist. It makes me a realist. The economy has been in the shitter for the last what, 3 years? 4 years? And in that same amount of time, the crime rate has spiked substantially, especially rural crime. Look at it locally, when those 3 women were killed after being T-Boned by a vehicle that was stolen in town, and then went to a rural area, cased out some places, and then was reported and chased from a rural area home. These criminals know that the response time for police to get to a rural area, is astronomical, and they're using that to their advantage. And if they do get caught, they get a slap on the wrist. Steal a truck and wreck it? Pfft, 3 months in jail and probation. You've learned your lesson, now don't do it again young man! People are getting fed up. They're getting fed up with their vehicles getting stolen. They're getting fed up with their houses being broken into. They're getting fed up with criminals. And that's what Colten and his friends decided to do that day. Be criminals. Now, have you noticed that not once, have I mentioned race? That's because race doesn't matter in a case like this. What matters are actions. To Quote Sir Isaac Newton, "To every action there is always an equal and opposite or contrary, reaction." Now, he was talking about Physics in that general statement, but the meaning is the same, I feel for this situation. And the actions carried out by Colten and his friends, resulted in an opposite reaction, in the form of a man defending his property, and his family. The ones playing the race card, are also playing the victim card. "If Colten was white, and Stanley was Native, he'd be in jail." No. He wouldn't. If the cards played the same, but the races were reversed, It would have played out very similar. THIS. WAS. NEVER. ABOUT. RACE. THIS. WAS. ALWAYS. ABOUT. CRIME. "Why weren't there any indigenous people on the jury?" I actually have an answer for this one. There were WELL over 100 people interviewed for possible Jury Duty for this case. I had a couple friends that were summoned for Jury Duty. And they both told me the same thing. Now, quick run down about Jury Duty. You have to be impartial. You cannot side with either party, you have to rely solely on the facts presented to the argument. Both of my friends said the same thing. During the interview process, while in the waiting area, EVERY indigenous person present, were talking to each other, and saying how they wanted to hang Stanley. That's not impartial. (And it's not something you openly talk about, when officers are all around you, relaying that information to the lawyers and judge.) (Follow up, neither of my friends were selected for Jury Duty, as they felt that they'd be partial to siding with Stanley. Good on them for the honesty.) Is it sad what happened? Yes, Absolutely. No family should experience a loss like this. Is it Stanley's fault it happened? No, absolutely not. Stanley didn't invite them onto his farm. He didn't tell them to steal his stuff. He didn't say they could have his ATV. He didn't provide them with the alcohol that made their B.A.C. 3+ times the legal limit. Stanley was protecting himself, his family, and his property, from the threat of some criminals. End of Story.

    Very sad case all around. The facts coming out in trial however, paint Colten and his friends in a very poor light. They spent the MORNING and rest of the day drinking all day, shooting ducks from the vehicle (illegal) drinking and driving (illegal) breaking into vehicles (illegal) and finally trying to steal a truck and a quad at the farm Colten was shot at. One of the people in the vehicle had a firearms prohibition, several had criminal records.

      Their lies have caught up with them once already, and once forensics reveals what really happened it's going to be game over for everyone wanting a conviction. Much like the michael brown case we will find those who act like psychopaths who think they can do as they please.... they meet their demise eventually. The only thing worse than having a cop testify against you is the fact that only the shooter is a valid witness to the shooting and he won't have to take the stand. 4 drunk witness all caught lying once, and soon to be caught lying undoubtedly about the events of that incident will be the only reason justice will be served. If you mislead the system with lies, you pay that price. Had the farmer not acted like that the bigger question of the day would be "who would be next" if they actually got away???

    • @griz063

      While I agree to a point . . . there also has to come a point when we accept that most of said "painting" and "poor light" . . . was provided by the litany of poor choices the adults in the vehicle freely and repeatedly made. The farmer that shot him was just the "final observer" of the work; trying to assess what this painting was about in the exceedingly poor light its creators provided.
      I have a great respect for what the Native Peoples once were. And it pains me to speak this truth, knowing that it will cause discomfort. or even accusation of "racial hatred".
      But the reality is that the outcome would have likely been similar if the apparent criminal invaders of this man's private property were white, red, green, black or purple. We have more than out-grown the phase where society is expected to allow "special dispensation" (or exemption from the consequences of one's actions), simply because of someone's racial history.

    • @campsitez2355
      @campsitez2355 6 років тому

      The farmer's "accident" was excused by the actions that led up to that point yes.
      The sad reality of this situation is that the driver if he wasn't sleeping at the wheel or passed out that he could have just as easily been armed and posed a threat to the farmer anyway. In this case accidental or not there is no reason to convict on any basis whatsoever. The fact that witness lies were taken seriously, etc. Is the actual racism here.

    • @griz063
      @griz063 6 років тому

      A thought. About the difference between a reason, and an excuse.
      An excuse is what everyone is looking for, because it gets you off scott-free. No consequence. Nothing to learn. No growth.
      Now try to exercise this as the "accident was reasonable, given the actions that led up to this point.".
      It leaves opening for both the society, the deceased man's community, AND the farmer to keep the learning process going. Nobody retreats into the delusion of "I am totally right, totally excused, totally beyond reproach . . . and therefore left with nothing to re-examine in my own life and possibly learn from".

    • @campsitez2355
      @campsitez2355 6 років тому

      The premise of their presence on Gerald Stanley's farm was criminal in nature. The driver of the vehicle was under a driving prohibition while driving around drunk on not just a flat tire but a completely destroyed tire. Anyone who saw something like that drive up your driveway in plain daylight hours... should consider that to not just be a threat but a significant and higher level threat. The level of this threat was only evidenced by the driver crashing into a parked vehicle while being in possession of a firearm while they were in the process of committing a crime.
      At the end of the day - there certainly are reasons to justify the farmer's actions. Is there any excuse for 5 drunk people to commit crimes and bear witness to an accident? No, there isn't a really good excuse for what they were doing that day and those other 4 people paid the price for being accessories to the crimes they were committing. If they'll willingly be passengers in a vehicle with a prohibited driver - there is little to no excuse that level of morality.
      As much as people want to pull the racist card, perhaps they should take a good hard look in the mirror and apply that same standard of racial scrutiny to the people in the vehicle. Why didn't they steal from their own community? Did they steal from their own community? Their former Cheif of the Red Pheasant First Nation was found driving while prohibited, where is their negative influence coming from that condones or promotes the idea that committing these kinds of crimes is in any way acceptable? If they had better influences in their own life I am going to assert that this instance of a farmer reacting due to a high presence of "issues" on their own society probably wouldn't ever occur in the first place. At this point we are _FAR BEYOND_ the idea of "excuses" and seeking _SOLUTIONS_ as to why 20-something yeard old native adults were committing acts of crime as if it were "normal" enough to defend with a crowd of people.... if you re-examine the situation, shifting the blame to the defending party ..... is not only delusional and counter productive but blatantly RACIST.

    I am sick of this. His death was a trsgedy nut to stand outside court and say it was cold blooded murder by a white farmer is ridiculous. Stanley is also a victim here. Noone, especially the First Nations peopleb want to admit he was engaged in criminal activities at the time of his deathn that he was a threat to the Stanley family and their property which he was on illegally at the time. Noone except neighbouring farmers will publicize the criminal activities that are being committed in relation to their property on a regular basis with little or no help from the legal system to resolve their fears. The RCMP have little cooperation within the First Nations, especially on the reserves and the First Nations Police are handicapped by politics, nepotism and relationships within the reserve.
    As politically incorrect as it is to say so, the natives have to learn respect for people and property. Without that as a starting point, there will be no common ground for the healing to start.

    The title is very misleading. It should read "teenager gets killed while on a stealing spree" by reading the misleading title you would think the farmer did something wrong until you realize that the teenager and his friends brought a gun to the farm and almost ran over the farmer's son. And there is no reason to mention race in the title because this should never been an issue about race.

    This video is about racism but Elsie is racist herself. At 4:14 by identifying the "White farmer"and that "white people have a law and (native... for a better term rather than Indian people) have a different law". She could have made her points by leaving racial identification out.

  • @wheelzwheela

    Armed robbery is a dangerous game and sometimes poor choices catch up with people. If it had been two First Nations on a reserve we would not even be hearing about this... this story is more about race than the young man's life. "There is one law for white people one law for Indian people, that's got to change man" I think a majority of white people would agree whole heartedly with that statement.

    • @joereid7875
      @joereid7875 6 років тому

      wheelzwheela No they don't. Sadly these young ADULTS Chose to drink and break the law all day! They chose to goonto that farm with criminal intent!Sadly this farmer chose to protect his family and his propertyand a young man lost his life! First nations are not misrepresented in the media! They are portrayed how THEY chose to behave! It turned out the way it did. because these young adults chose to act with criminal intent that day!! Cannot blame that on race!! Justice hasbeen served!!Maybe the native leaders should now focus On combating the choices their young people are choosing!! Cannot stand the wailing and drummg at the end!!

    • @griz063
      @griz063 6 років тому +1

      Unfortunately, this is exactly so. A socio-political agenda is dancing on this young man's grave. We should come together to celebrate the good; and to learn lessons from the bad and apply both as a memorial to him.
      I agree whole-heartedly with the assertion that we need to cease having one set of laws for Native peoples and another for Whites. This same outcome was entirely feasible if the out-numbering group found in the apparent commission of a crime were white, red, black, purple or polka-dotted: Armenian or Argentinian.
      There comes a point when trying to ride the victimhood bandwagon of "racial hatred against us" itself becomes the harbinger of great racial disrespect (if not downright hatred) in suggesting Native people need/deserve exclusion from the consequences of their own poor choice over the rest of us, simply because of their race -- or what happened to its ancestors.

      wheelzwheela Yeah apparently First Nations people who break crimes including RAPING CHILDREN are given way less sentences because they’re “first nations and had a bad childhood.” They’re also sent to HEALING LODGES for a few months no punishment.

      For crimes and associated aftermath that plays out totally within their community, they should be respectfully allowed to exercise their traditions and see where it takes their culture.
      But ones that cross over into the other culture inhabiting these lands, special treatment should not be expected just because of things that came before.

    No matter what your ethnic background is, if everyone lived by this quote, this incident wouldn't have happened: “I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them.”― John Wayne It doesn't take a high IQ to treat people and their property the way you would like in return. People who continue to commit crimes upon others and their property, have to pay the piper and may not like the tune being played. Criminals are taking a risk when they choose their victims as in the Stanley case. Imagine the robber who attempts to steal someones wallet at knife point. That victim may just be someone who can fight, who knocks the knife from the robber, the proceeds to knock his/her head off. The old saying "buyer beware" rings true: beware of the trouble you choose to buy, because you may not like the purchase, and there aren't any refunds.

    We have reached a bizarre place where all of these people doing stupid, ill-advised, questionable or stupid stuff become "victims" when a consequence of the actions THEY set in motion results in a tragic consequence. We're treating everyone like they're children, with no notion of responsibility and accountability. And even more bizarre . . . is the notion that judicial realities need to change just because a certain race or sex is involved.
    You start your day with drinking. Take a bunch of your buddies out driving (likely a crime there). Trespass on someone's property (crime there). One or several people get out and start messing with stuff that isn't their's (another crime). Give very real indication that one's private property is being overrun with possibly intoxicated people up to criminal intent. At that point the set of possible consequences set forth by a litany of foolish choices probably wouldn't have differed if they were white, black, red or purple.
    I am sorry to say that the Native position here is just untenable. He didn't "accidentally" call for a gun or point it at them. Whether it "accidentally" went off (one possible criminal act) has become a total distraction that these young adults had embarked on a day of stupid, foolish, ill-advised and quite likely criminal acts. Yes, perhaps "low level" criminal acts. Perhaps fueled by alcohol and exacerbated by poor judgement.
    But is the position that young adults are "entitled" to a different set of judicial rules just because they are of a certain race?? And that "justice" is only served . . . when you are treated like children??

    The kids screwed up yes, but the farmer did commit a crime. The farmer should have gotten some jail time. You cant justify murder, if that was the case, nobody would get charged. Did he feel threatened? Yes, does it justify pulling out a firearm and a killing? No . Property isnt worth death. Gerald stanley put his own family in danger as well. Call the cops, you take law into own hands, this is what happens.

      da melchior it wasn't only about property. Boushie and his friends brought a gun to the farm and from the reckless driving they almost ran over the son. If an unidentified person break and enters a house but is shot. The home owner isn't going to get charged. This isn't that different. And had he did nothing and called police it would take longer than 15 minutes to reach a rural area. By that time the farmer or his family could have been killed either by the gun that the kids brought or by the vehicle. I'm not saying any situation means shoot on site but Boushie and his friends did give the farmer enough reason to pull the trigger and defend himself and his family.
