  • The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in your entire body, and if it gets injured, you've got a real problem.
    The Achilles tendon is what allows you to pull your heel up, off the ground, push off and accelerate when you run.
    What many runners don't understand is that the Achilles tendon also helps slow you down and decelerate when you’re trying to slow down, absorb force as you're landing while you're running.
    This video by Dr. Christopher Segler talks about Achilles tendon early warning signs in runners.

    could you imagine back about 100 years there were no surgery to repair this. most people would just be crippled by it.

    • @DocOnTheRun
      @DocOnTheRun  3 роки тому +7

      Totally true...but casting with the foot in a plantar flexed position (toes pointing down) was a widely used and fairly effective substitute to surgery.

      Surgery and non surgical treatment of the Achilles has the same recovery rate and no extra benefit from surgery new research has found.

    I felt my achilles get thinner and thinner when put through my paces doing korfball training. The coach made us repeat backwards and forwards jumping on one foot, I was pleased when he put me through to play on the team. I scored a terrific goal near the end of the game then felt my achilles go. My GP misdiagnosed my rupture and told me to rest it. After a few days I hobbled down to A&E and they took me in straight away and operated the next day. The surgeon did a great job and I had practically full mobility. God bless our NHS.

    Probably the biggest reason I stretch and adjusted my foot fall to land and push up from the balls of my feet, not the heel to toe.

    I've never had pain at all at my achilles. But recently after I played basketball, I untied my shoe and it was still tight on my foot. I pulled my shoe pretty fast from the foot and I started to feel a weird burn in the tendon, over my heel. Could this be an early sign?

    • @DocOnTheRun
      @DocOnTheRun  3 роки тому +5

      The Sural Nerve crosses right over the Achilles tendon and can get compressed by a tight high collar (like on a basketball shoe). Compressing the nerve can cause boring tight pain.

    Have ever heard that tingling around the edge of foot, and only there, is a syptom of Achilles tendonitis?

    • @DocOnTheRun
      @DocOnTheRun  2 роки тому +2

      Yes...Interesting that you made that observation. The sural nerve crosses the Achilles on the back of the leg above the ankle, before continuing out along the outside (lateral edge) of the foot. If the Achilles is swelling and impinging on the sural nerve, it can create tingling in the distal distribution of the nerve.

I have had two appointments with a podiatrist, and he literally said he does not know what is going on with my feet. I am still struggling and have not been able to run for more than a month.

    Hi I got stiffness in my left Achilles and it hurts when I walk around and feels tight for the last few days and today I decided to try and walk for a bit and heard a loud pop and got a weird tingling but wasn’t painful, not sure if I pulled it or if it’s a early sign of something but later in the day my Achilles wasn’t hurting that bad when I try to walk around but it’s still definitely tight and I can feel it. Don’t know what that pop still means or if I should get it checked out. Some help would be appreciated

    In my right Achilles, I am having stiffness and a tight feeling to where it needs to pop and I can roll my ankle in a circle and make it pop. It happens over and over throughout the day maybe even around 15-20 times a day. The popping is mostly not painful but sometimes is. I have weakness and slight pain in the ankle when trying to go up on my toes and when pointing the toes, its painful to put my foot in the pointing direction. Does any of this sound like a serious problem or something I can deal with at home through exercises that strengthen the tendon?

      Thank you for watching and sorry to hear about the ongoing Achilles tendon trouble.
      Pain is never normal. What that pain means in your case is not something I can say without understanding your specific situation better. I will need to ask a number of questions before I could answer your questions to make any specific recommendations.
      The Achilles Course for Runners was created to help runners with Achilles tendon problems understand exactly how anyone can decide which condition is at the at the root of the problem…and exactly which self-treatments I have found most effective with runners who need get back to running. You can access that here: www.docontherun.com/doc-on-the-run-products/
      Some runners prefer to arrange a private call to discuss specific circumstances and get back on track as quickly as possible. If you already have your X-rays, MRI or CT scan on disk, we can review them in detail during a 60-minute Web-Cam (Virtual Doctor Visit) Consultation.
      If you just need to speak with me to get a second opinion discussion by phone or over webcam, you could do that later today or whenever it fits your schedule. You can block my calendar for a web-cam call or phone call here: www.docontherun.com/talk-to-the-expert/

I lifted that leg and then...... suddenly I felt like 120volts (I know how that feels sadly) was just chilling in the middle of my thigh, plus a knife, plus lava all of that insane out of body experience pain increased to indescribable pain....so like 7.5 pain to 4 million....7.5 to 4 million.
    It was insane. I nearly passed out. I wish I had. I'm brown...even in winter usually but occasionally I turn gray in winter lol but point is...from the time my muscle tore till the time was being helped up...5 minutes max....my leg was Green, Blue, Purple, Red and oddly almost white.
    No I did not stretch prior, No I didn't work out or even walk before joining a church league softball team lol....smh....yea super stupid. To this day, if I squat down. My right thigh has a golf ball sized knot in the middle of it and I can't sprint at all.

    The professional hypochondria industry at it again, fear of imaginary injuries... You know the raramuri run 400 consecutive miles in harachis made of tire treads? You know the children who live near machu picchu will run up and down the entire mountain just for tourist donations? This is bourgeois alienation from reality, the contrived mindset of the fitness industry compounded with a deepset neurosis. Can the achilles tendon tear or become inflamed? Of course it can, but "Achilles tendon
    rupture" and "achilles tendonitis" are not real, they are constructs of the mind, life is pain, we constantly straddle the border between life and death, we are incuring metabolic damage constantly, and if we forget this we become mentally fragile, we fall into this world of pathologies where we need a third party to describe our own reality to us, all so they can sell us the cure. I have walked off injuries far worse then this, integrated the pain and the damage with my awareness, embraced it holistically, and used it to become antifragile, it is not an injury, it is an evolution, your body rebuilding itself stronger and better, and it may be inconvenient to you to deal with it, but that's life, and It's far better to embrace this organic, dynamic form of change than to deal with paranoia and the pedantic methods of avoiding the inevitable difficulties of life. Deal with the fundamental patterns and you will extricate yourself from the Sisyphean task of managing the symptoms of maladaptation.
