High school psychology teacher here. My students are currently learning and discussing Piaget’s theory of moral development, as well as Kohlberg’s theory of moral reasoning. This video could not have come at a more perfect time. Hopefully y’all don’t mind, but I just made a whole lesson based on this video and will be showing some of it to my students so they can give their feedback on these scenarios. Amazing job as always guys❤️
@@heatherfults7506 I think they will enjoy hearing it because most of the discussions on these topics are academic. It’ll be a change to hear it from regular people with no psychological training and a lot more interesting too.
@@Ali-lm7uw those are next. I tie all of that in with a full lesson on the holocaust. Without a basic knowledge of the holocaust the significance and purpose of the Milgram experiment doesn’t make as much sense.
I’ve listened to every episode of Mile Higher and this is in my top 3 favorite EVER. Thanks for taking my mind a mile higher; this show has truly changed my life/way of thinking in the last couple years.
Funny cuz when they said people are inherently out to save/protect themselves, I didn't relate. Doesn't make me a Saint, rather a people pleaser and door mat haha. Need to find my self worth ;)
Ironic considering she has a true crime channel and knows all about how evil humans can be. Good for her for believing that people are inherently good, though.
I used to be a people pleaser, and it got me nowhere. Once I hit hard times, I was suddenly all alone; I learned real quick to help yourself before helping others. 😕
josh : 'I think your messing w fate there" Kendall : "mmm well maybe there's a reason I was there with the f*cking lever so, that's fate as well" I get such a good laugh listening to them. Kendall and josh give off the best vibes (Janell too ofc) all of them
Hi! I have contemplated pursuing a PhD in Philosophy. Its not a popular program in the US from what I can tell. Can you recommend any institutions or pathway to get there? Also, what would you do with that type of degree? Just curious.
I suggested maybe doing a live chat next time too so listeners can put their hypotheticals forward before they have chance to overthink! Also the great chance to hear listeners opinions too. I was a philosophy student too so especially loved this one, definitely one of my favourites!
Where did they find these questions!? This would be a perfect way to spend the evening with someone by asking these incredibly difficult and hypothetical questions.
I really loved this episode and it reminded me of the “Ponder Sesh” episodes you guys used to do. I learned so much stuff that I’d never heard of before and it made me question my beliefs and pushed me to really explore other possibilities. Please bring it back. I miss them. Even still, loved this episode. I love and support you guys always.
I really enjoyed this type of episode. It challenged my thought process and made me think in different perspectives. When Kendall was talking about living through the good and bad and how it shapes us, it made me think of when my mom passed away. My mom passed away in March of 2009 of COPD. She had waited til 5 in the morning when everyone except my step sister and I was awake. It was just her and I in the room when she took her last breath. It was the hardest moment, yet one of the most precious moments I had in my life. We shared my 1st breath together, and we shared her last breath, together.
Yes so true. They are the OG's of true crime. Well at least Kendall is. She started her channel at least 7 years ago. And most true crime channels followed her lead. And both Kendall and Josh have remained humble and kind. Love these two and Janelle as well.💖
Very interesting perspectives! I really loved the talk @40:00 where Josh starts saying about laying your life for a brother. My dad was murdered for sticking up for someone and a year after his passing he came to “visit” me in my dream and said that death is not the end. There’s also a quote I love by Chief Seattle “There is no death. Only a change of worlds” Enjoyed this episode so much !
It’s me, I’m the one getting stoned and listening to you guys lol also blowing my mind every answer I have for the questions, one of you brings up a point that makes me question it! 😮💨✨
Please do this again. I enjoyed this. My question is "If you were in a fire and could only grab one thing, would save a common house pet or a priceless piece of art?
The pet! If you have a priceless piece of art, you almost certainly have insurance on the piece. One time we had some electrical issues.... I set out over a hundred houseplants in my yard, so I wouldn't lose them if the house caught fire. X'D
This last question/discussion made me think about the final few episodes of The Good Place, where Chidi and other characters decides to leave after a long long long long long time of having everything 'good' and 'happy'. I agree with all the points you made, just as in nature, there needs to be a balance and we need negative and challenging experiences to appreciate and exist in the good, but also these things would grow tiresome and become less special if that's all we had. Ice cream sundaes are great but you can't eat them for every meal.
Yeah I’m with Josh, you can’t even know how to be appreciative of good things if you don’t have poor experiences to compare them to. Joy and happiness is literally just states of appreciation and thankfulness
PLEASE DO MORE my partner & i has so much fun listening and talking with each other along with you guys!! i love how open minded you guys are, i’d love to have a convo with you guys one day ❤️
Another great episode… gave me a lot to think about as always. I’m hoping you will do an episode on Josh’s upbringing and background if it’s not too difficult or personal to put out there. I was raised Catholic and am now pagan so I identify so much with him, although my childhood was nowhere near as restrictive as he’s said before.
My head hurts! It is really hard to be responsible for harming other people. I'm glad I don't have to make these decisions. However, I think that at the end of the day, everything comes to self preservation
A wise man aka 50 Cent once said “sunny days wouldn’t be special, if it wasn’t for rain, joy wouldn’t feel so good, if it wasn’t for pain. Death gotta be easy cause life is hard”
I love the back and forth going on here. Everyone brings such different opinions, and even when they seem sure of their own opinions, they're respectful and hear out everyone else's. :) Also thought experiments and ethical debates will never get old - more of these episodes please!!
I would LOVE to see more of these!!!!! Also, I love your take on the tank. I became SUPER close with my grandma because I went through a devastating break up in high school. If I hadn’t had that painful experience, my grandma and I wouldn’t have bonded the way we did… difficulties build who you are, and also build human connection ❤ LOVE YOU GUYS
Always get such a laugh out of Josh's blunt responses lmaooo "I just walk away and let whatever happen happens", "push him", etc. Appreciate the mixture of deep thought and bluntness. 😂
I feel as tho being a parent has changed Josh's outlook on the simulation philosophical question. Couldn't stand to miss out on even 2 years of my kiddos life. 💚💚 love this episode.
Melt your brain is an understatement, there are so many factors that go into morality and sometimes people have to make these decisions in seconds or less. I'd love to go through more thought experiments, this was a really interesting episode!
I love this episode!!!!! I love being able to think very deeply this way. Please do many more of these!!! I didn’t care for philosophy in school, but you guys have made it so interesting to me! ❤ this is probably my favorite episode y’all have done.
Kendall saying that she thinks that souls are constantly reborn and continuously get to choose what kind of life they want next in order to grow is the first time I’ve heard someone else voice that thought. That’s something I have wondered about for years! Nice to hear someone else who has had that question.

Hi guys, great episode. Something to think about regarding the plug in simulator. What if you had lost someone you love, your child / children for instance, and you can plug in and live your life with them and release the grief, would you plug in then?? (A question I have for myself based on my own living experience) Much love to you all ❤
Loved this episode and would love to listen to more of these. I really needed to hear what you guys said about bad times being such an important role in our lives. It’s easy to forget
i agreee with josh with the tank scenario !! mind blown :,) i think humans need to feel emotional rollercoasters in their lifetime .. because that’s what makes us human .. good and bad coexist to make this world rotate pretty much.
Listening to this while in my self driving car heading home from work wondering if my car will run me into a wall if something runs out in front of me 🤨
absolutely love this episode! i’m currently in the process for apply to med school and i believe this question come up in interviews. As a doctor there is the view point of only saving lives without harming others. So you can’t let a patient die just bc his organs would be donated and save five others. Do no harm would be my approach to the first scenario. But with the bombing scenario i don’t think this approach can be used as lives must be lost for the greater good
I am actually grateful for that tragic miss that happened to me because it shaped me to be the strength of a human I am so I can help all those around me and Kim experience true happiness 😊
When it comes to the tank thought. Honestly the bad times in my life have brought me to some of the most amazing people that I'm so lucky to have in my life. So without those bad moments I wouldn't have them. So constantly living in bliss seems sad.
I really LOVED this episode!! These scenarios were difficult but so good to think about! It brings you back to the meaning of life and gives perspective! I totally agree with the simulation one, life is about growing from the bad and enjoying the good times!

Right. In my opinion people are inherently selfish. Self preservation is human instinct
