- This episode will round out the Five Starr Sound Labs sessions in Highland Park, California; I want to reiterate how gracious it was of Juan Alderete to invite us into his studio. We are very thankful for that. Juan has a multitude of quality videos over at pedalsandeffects.com-premium content abounds.
In walks Nick Reinhart. Nick starts constructing a dystopian infrastructure of noise almost before we can get our cameras on. Using his Super-Sonic, Nick lined up in varying order: the Recovery Effects Bad Comrade, Small Sound Big Sound Buzzz, Red Panda Particle, Earthquaker Devices Bit Commander and Rainbow Machine, Old Blood Noise Endeavors Procession, Line 6 DL4, and Digitech Whammy. Nick's musical skill is matched by his charm and wit. Before we know it everyone in the room is fully engaged in a somewhat depthy dissection of the definition of Riff. Nels Cline bored to death from earthquaker is filled with pretty weird sounds. Because of that video I am now getting 3 odd the devices he had. The korg kaoss pad 2, boss harmonist, a d soda miser by dani ever. The soda miser with the chaos switch of course.
This is a guy who knows exactly how to get what he wants from his pedals and still leave room to get creative.
I would love to see Nick get together with Ian Williams for a project. Nick's insane sound with Ian's looping ability to create an amazing wall of sound would be an awesome project.

God lvl in creativity of new dimensions of attitude to making sounds , sonically whole new universe. I am glad that I can hear it, it's beautiful in its own way.

what I got from this is nick’s brain needs to filter out 7 minutes of absolute chaotic energy until he starts playing something melodic at 7:30 and that’s absolutely perfect

That "666 Devil" pattern is just a Diminished 7th arpeggio. Starting on F an Fdim7 is F, Ab, Cb (B), Ebb (D). A lot of cats usually refer to Symmetrical Diminished Scales when talking about a Chord/Scale relationship for the bb7 chord, i.e. Whole/Half Diminished (C, Db, Eb, F, Gb, Ab, Bbb, B, C). Literally just half step, whole step, half step, whole step, etc. to get the octatonic scale.
This riff isn't based on exclusively either of them though.

@@whiterottenrabbit Can you point me to where in the video Nick proclaims to be playing a ''highly advanced riff''? Wasn't the purpose of the video for Nick to experiment playing around with lots of different pedals in different combinations to create interesting and unusual effects? Plenty of other videos on youtube of guitar players actually attempting to play ''highly advanced'' riffs. In fact, there are an abundance of guitar wankery videos that have been done to death and bore the life out of many people which is why such people view videos like this in the first place.

Coffee and riffs needs a new host, because as much as I love the people that are interviewed, the host is really bland, boring, awkward and almost acts dazed and confused on purpose, maybe it gets him chicks, maybe he thinks he's hip. who knows?

Some weeks ago, I saw a guy in an alternative club doing a similar thing during his live show. It was strangely weird and somewhat attractive. But, hidden behind all these effect pedals, you couldn't tell if the guy really could play guitars. I mean, I could essentially do the same: just get a shitload of pedals, press some buttons and pretend to play a guitar. Would all you fanboys cheer for me? So, then why are you cheering for this guy? Seriously, somebody tell me!

I think this is probably the first and last time I'll have a
conversation on youtube about anything, but I think you raise a good
point, it's certainly hard to assess how much musicianship is actually
going on sometimes when the musician is drowning in a sea of pedals.
That being said, besides the fact that Nick is a very good guitar player
and great with maneuvering his feet, even if he wasn't, I would still
be interested in watching stuff like this, because classic guitar
technique is not my top priority in music. Similarly, If you, or anyone
else did a set like this I would definitely watch or cheer you on if I
thought your sound choices were interesting. Besides technical
musicianship I think interesting sound design is very important. I would
rather watch a nontechnical musician that is really putting together
some wild sounds and doing something new than a musician that is doing
something that is technically impressive but sonically generic.
Ultimately I'm not there to test or judge how good a guitar player the
person is in a classical sense, I just care if the end result of his
shoegazing is appealing or not. That being said, I do think musicianship
is important, because its basically the foundation you pile all your
pedals and funky sounds on top of, and it'll give you much more
versatility in your compositions and playing. In a perfect world I would
like all guitarists (and any other musicians for that matter) using big
pedalboards to be incredibly technically, but a lot of technically
incredible musicians tend to shy away from weirder sounds because
they're more steeped in tradition (some, definitely not all). So anyway,
yeah, I would cheer for you if I thought your stuff sounded cool.
That's my two cents.
whiterottenrabbit It's not about playing guitar, or bass in a sense. Sure that's great too and that's where you start but the guitar essentially drives the the effects pedals. The manipulation of the guitar's frequencies is where the mastery lies. However being a good guitar player is certain important.

whiterottenrabbit who cares what other people do, music isn't a meritocracy. if a dude feels he wants to use a ton of pedals or, conversely, if a dude choses to just simply plug straight into his amp, then so be it. it wouldn't make either or the other any cooler for doing either or. the result might be interesting and unique or just the exact opposite of that, and even then that would be a moot point in and of itself subject to the vast, variable differences in perception from individual to individual. at the end of the day our gear is merely a tool that we use to create music, no more, no less. what we chose to do with it, how much of it we chose to acquire and how we express ourselves with it is abstract as can be and that's what makes music fun if you ask me, my guy.

actually playing, because i know this guy is phenomenal, but c'mon enough
