Just returned from a week in Rome. Your vids proved invaluable. Many thanks. All your points were spot on. We wouldn't have had such a nice trip without your vids. We noticed that the better we dressed the less hassle we received from street venders. Possibly unsure if we were tourists or locals. just wanted to say thanks! Next trip...Israel.

just a little tip from a Roman follower: there's a local train from Fiumicino Airport to Tuscolana station (which is located in the south-eastern part of Rome, just 2 metro stops from San Giovanni). That's a lot cheaper than the 13 euros Leonardo Express (it costs 8 euros per person per trip) and the journey takes just a few more minutes.

Excellent advice! I lived in Rome for 27 years. Each time I go back to Rome on holiday, I take the train to Tuscolana and then take the underground at Ponte Lungo.

The best 3 tips we got from our cruise operators:
    1. The drinking water fountains - fill your bottles from these street fountains - no need to keep paying for bottled water.
    2. Tickets for the Colosseum are also valid for the Forum and the Palatine Hill and visa versa - the queues for either of these places tend to be much shorter than at the Colosseum so buy your tickets at either place and walk straight past the queues at the Colosseum.
    3. If you are travelling with children under 14 - entry to the Forum etc is half price providing you can prove their age - take their passport and ask for the cheaper tickets - don't ask, don't get!
These 3 tips saved us many Euros and a stack of time as we didn't have to queue at all for the Colosseum - really important if you have limited time in this city.

Just adding a point about pick pocketing. I was "crowd crushed" whilst getting on a bus. And then I realised my back pack was wide open. I'm fanatical about making sure it's closed properly so I believe it was definitely a pick pocketing attempt.

We were there 1st week of Sep. 18 and we absolutely loved it, everyone speaks English and people were friendly. I avoided public transportation all together and only moved around in Uber. For 10-12 euro it's not worth it to risk being pick pocketed that can ruin your vacation. ✌😉

I LOVED Rome and Vatican City. I can't wait to go back. I did a pilgrimage tour but next I want to do a Foodie tour.
The pilgrimage tour included hotel food that catered to the Americani and not representative of authentic Italian food. Florence and Assisi had the greatest examples of Italian hotel food. Thanks, Mark for all your great travel tips and advice.

I love Rome! And would love to go back. The history, the food, the fashion! ❤️ but... if I had to choose my favorite Italian city, it would have to be Florence. ❤️❤️ something about that city that just calls me. All of Italy is amazing and you can’t go wrong with any place to visit. The people are amazing and I just love the history. Pompeii was another amazing visit that I feel I need to do again cause after walking around for 8 hours there, I still didn’t see it all.

Thanks Mark. I visited Roma for the first time last December, a great time to be there. The Vatican was still crowded but easier to get in. I liked Rome a lot, but it didn't dislodge my favorite European cities: Paris, Prague, Tbilisi, Lyon and now Palermo.(I loved Palermo!) Rome seemed so dedicated to tourism that I couldn't crack it, the way I long ago did for Paris. Yes I saw the big sites. (Trevi Fountain should be renamed Selfie Fountain these days. But the Pantheon was incredible.) My favorite aspect of Rome was hunting down Bernini statues in out of the way churches. That brought things to life for me in much less touristic environments. And oh my the pizza I found while doing that! Walking! Yes. So much that I was glad to take an excruciatingly slow bus back to the Vatican area where my inexpensive hotel was located. The slow bus ride gave me a much needed break.I wish I had seen this then! Obviously this is the beginning of a new series. More please!

I loved Rome. As far as walking, be prepared to go up and down tons of hills. The city is very hilly. All of the food I had there was very good and very cheap. A starter, main course, dessert, liter of house wine and bottle of sparkling water was cheaper than a main course and beer at Applebee's. I think I had carbonara 5 times. Lastly with pickpockets, watch out for organized groups. I saw a group of young pickpockets near termini. One of them had a mini pig. If you stopped to look at it, the others would circle behind you and try to get into your bag. They were professionals. Overall, Rome is my favorite city in Europe. Great video. All the info in here is accurate.

I went on a bus tour in Italy in 2014. Everything was taken care of with the tour company which helped a lot. To avoid pickpockets I had a fanny pack type belt which I wore under my top and kept hidden under my clothes. All I had in it was my credit/debit cards, a little bit of cash and my passport. I had a camera as well which I kept it on a strap across my body and held it in front of me or hid under my jacket. The forum is a definite MUST- SEE. Unfortunately, the Trevi Fountain was under construction and very crowded when I was there and so that was disappointing.

We went to Rome last year in August and made it our home base in April for visits to Florence and Venice. I can offer two additional tips. One, do not skip the opportunity to go inside a church and I mean any church. Trust me, just go in. It's almost always free (some might charge a few euro) and you will see art worthy of the best museums. Secondly, if you go in the second half of August you should know that many, many Romans take vacation the second half of August. It wasn't a huge burden for us but we did miss out on some local restaurants that we wanted to visit because the owners were on vacation. The other thing to consider if you go in August and you visit the coast is it will be ccroowwdded. I mean it. Everyone is on vacation. Everyone goes to the coast. Again, not a huge deal for us as we hadn't planned a day at the beach but we did visit Amalfi and it was hard getting around.

Spent 4 days in Rome after a week in Bavaria which included 2 days at Oktoberfest. I liked Trastevere. Rome is a great walking city. I needed to walk off all that beer, wurst, and döner kababs.

I've been to Rome! I *loved* it. (couldn't eat 'murican pasta after that for like a year cause nothing here could compare to that Italian stuff :P) I really wanna go back eventually

Pasta dishes are pretty easy, although my father was Italian, and i got super inspired after eating there. There was a restaurant near the pantheon the we stumbled upon with a line of locals out the door. It changed my cooking for ever.

      Hi I’m from Rome
      Pasta alla carbonara
      Pasta all’amatriciana
      Pasta cacio e pepe
      Pasta alla gricia
      Pizza
      Trippa
      Saltimbocca
      Gelato
Don’t go to places where there’s a guy telling you to come in or places with a cartel outside of the restaurant because probably they’ll give you fake Roman dishes adapted for tourists

Great content as always Mark. I'm a big fan of your channel and planning a trip to either Rome or Paris (still trying to decide) for this year . Is May a good time visit Rome? I'm concerned about the weather. I would like to go when the weather is pleasant.

I recommend using AirBnB for a cheaper option to the hotels. My cousin had a great experience with one of the super hosts there. She stayed for 10 days and she can't say enough good things. Of course, there are plenty of reviews on AirBnB so you can read for yourself.
This was a great video Wolter, thank you! I will be visiting for the first time in October 2019 and appreciate your insights!

We go back for our second visit in a few weeks. I'm so excited to see Trastevere and other parts of the city that I missed the first time. I always enjoy your videos. Keep them coming. Also, several people mention a great place to eat near the Pantheon...any idea what it is?

I really would emphasize the pickpockets. It is a problem and always be on high alert. Also watch when going to your hotel with your luggage. If you have an amount of luggage that is challenging for you to handle and a person offers to help you it is most likely a scam. Be weary when trusting people. Also make sure you validate your ticket for the train they do check and will fine you. Other than that Rome is a great city and don't be discouraged about visiting over this just be aware of it and you will be fine.

A few times a year you can book tours with the Colliseum itself, and get a 'cellar and upper tiers' guided tour at a very low price. No waiting in Q's and very good explanantion by the archeologists. My pre-teen children were very engaged (even tough English isn't their first language). You will have to note when booking starts and have some luck too I guess.

@@lovepearl88 you don't need touroperators, just book via the culture departement on their website (English, Spanish, Italian, perhaps more): www.coopculture.it/en/the-colosseum.cfm#

@@lovepearl88 oh, in the Vatican, we only visited the basilica itself and climbed all the stairs up into the cuppola so you have a 360view from the roof of the basilica over the entire Vatican.

Is a whole lot easier if you take the bus to the train station in Ciampino and then the train, also is like 2.5 euros.
