Sorry for the weird frame rates on this video! Trying a new setup and didn’t set the camera up properly. Constantly improving!
You always need to try different things, Alex. I am looking forward to this.
Alex: Congratulations on achieving home ownership! Although it seems there is always something to fix or replace (regardless of the age of the house), I don’t think you’ll regret it. I was initially stunned by the cost of your wiring addition, but when you explained the scope of the entire project, it seemed reasonable. Looking forward to more videos in the future.
Thanks so much! Agreed, already realizing this, but we're happy to have a place of our own now.
Congratulations on the purchase of your home and the end paying rent! I’m looking forward to lots more home content and videos about the different chargers that you will be testing for your employer.
Ha, thanks so much! Let me know if there are any specific ones I need to check out!
@@Sibs You bet, Alex! You’re going to have loads of fun knowing that any improvements that you make to your home are yours to keep and that they don’t stay with your landlord. I always upgraded my apartments and left them better than how I found them, but the first time that I upgraded my own home it was an amazing feeling! I’ve been in my forever home since March 1989 and I hope to never have to move.
you’re right the labor is a big expense that was all my expense besides the wall unit which is connected to the Tesla wall unit
Congrats on your house 🎉
Thank you so much 😀
Super video! Thx! I did the same thing in my garage…2 chargers and 100amp service upgrade for $4,000 (back in 2018). Only difference is a 2nd electric meter was added for the utility’s EV TOU (Time of Use) program. Both EV’s start charging automatically at 11pm for lower off-peak energy pricing ($0.11/kWh).
Very cool! Unfortunately we don't have many rate options here in Ohio, but I'll have to reach out to our utility to see if there's anything they can do. Electricity is already pretty cheap at ~$0.13/kWh all day
@@Sibs Super kool! I'm here in the metro-Detroit area with DTE Utility company. 100% of my grid power is from DTE's renewable energy credit (REC) system from Michigan's growing wind and solar projects (driving EV's with green energy is super). I have 1 Tesla Wall Charger (48amp) and 1 Chargepoint Charger (32amp) in the garage. A connected smoke/fire detector + fire extinguisher in the garage in case of fire. A mesh WIFI satellite (like a WIFI repeater) network in the garage for Tesla software updates...some more ideas for your high-tech garage!!!
Your 14-50 needs to be ground up to take pressure off cord. Congratulations on home ownership. Good info.
👍 on your new hse.
More videos pls.🇰🇪
Congrats on buying your first home! Stuff like your added panel to the garage has home ownership written all over it lol. Sometimes I feel like it's cheaper to just rent haha. We are working on multiple things right now at our place, heat pump HVAC, need some flashings changed on the roof, also looking into a heat pump water heater and we just got double pane windows installed lol.
My OCD is killing me too. Why is the ground not up on the NEMA 14-50? Omggggg lol. I want to go over there and re-install/rotate it for you like right now :D.
Agreed it is a lot to handle! Best of luck with your upgrades!
Yeah I noticed that too, I should have pointed it out during the install...
Congratulations on the home purchase, don't forget the federal tax credit for chargers!
I've been using a basic plug for 3 years in my home and charging at work as backup. So far so good.
Yes! I've already told my accountant lol. Should have covered this in the video too!
Have you had to re-torque your Al wire? I had been thinking about using a 2/0 Al for a 150ft run to my car port but hesitant due to the expansion and contraction of Al. Specially since evse is a constant draw over a few hours at high amperage.
Hey Alex, Congratulations on your new home. I’m curious if you compared the cost to have AEP (local provider) add a new meter just for the detached garage versus the run from the house?
Thanks! I actually didn't even get it quoted out, as it was an even further run to get power from the closest transformer to my garage.
Great to have you back Alex!! Really great job getting that garage setup for more future service.
Since you work for a charging company, is there any way to get Level 3 charging at Home??? I wasn't sure if there would be some kind of direct DC from home batteries to EV chargers being researched?
Hey, good questions. Generally DC charging requires 3 phase power, but a few chargers out there like the Freewire Boost can run off of a 240V/100A single phase feed, which charges a big 160kWh battery inside the unit. This would be way too big to fit in my garage and cost >$100k, so less of a chance I get something like that for free. The DC from solar or batteries directly to car DC charging makes a lot of sense, but unfortunately you still need controllers and equipment to regulate power and make sure you don't fry anything. We may see something in the future, but right now it doesn't make a ton of sense when most everything else in the house runs on AC.
@@Sibs Thanks for the information Alex. It's been a bit hard just digging up how it could be done and such.
I just paid $11,400 for a new panel/circuit breakers/100a subpanel in south Charlotte, NC. I still need to get the each of the three 80a chargers intended for that circuit installed. It ain't cheap to do things to code/permitted.
I asked the electrical firm that did the work (I bid three) for a breakdown of parts and labor and as the Australians say "Yea,.....Nah"
Labor charge seemed very excessive for a 1 person 3 day job. As general advice for anything expensive, make sure to get several quotes and negotiate down the price. Glad everything is up and running.
I actually got another quote and it was close to $10k for the same work. So this was about half the cost 😅
Nice setup, that’s a looong run! We got away with a relatively easy install. Cost was $620 all together, then we got a $500 rebate from the electric co-op, so pretty cheap for a similar NEMA 14-50 set up, but no future-proofing. Does your utility or state offer any rebates or incentives for the install?
Not bad!
We're on a small local utility, so unfortunately no local incentives. However I will take the federal incentive for this project.
Congrats on the home, I've been renting a townhouse and using 20A 120 plug and it's worked since I work at home but once we buy I'll be installing a 50A plug. Did you qualify for any rebates through your energy company? I know in MA they offer some $ towards it, not sure on exact amounts but $1500 I think?
Thanks! No local incentives, but did qualify for the federal tax credit and got $1000 back.
The wire looks like it was run too close to the bottom of the joists in your basement. Ouch.
Did they drive a new ground rod for the 100 amp panel since it’s detached?
They did, I forgot to mention in the video. Relatively low cost add
If you spent only $20 on the NEMA 14-50 outlet you may want to upgrade to an industrial grade 14-50 outlet if you intend to be unplugging and plugging in different EVSE's as the cheaper outlets are not intended for that type of duty cycle and are at higher risk of fire. Otherwise a nice setup. I'm looking at a similar upgrade this year for my garage.
That is the plan eventually. I've heard bad things about these outlets if they aren't the commercial version
Wow, that’s a lot of money. I have a Tesla charger and I had a Nema 1450 outlet and I called my electrician and they connected a 50 amp. They connected electricity directly to the wall unit I don’t have no more 1450 outlet Wishon glad because the 1450 outlet I had the outlet was getting worn out and told me it had to be replaced or just run a direct outlet from the fuse box to my outlet in the judge in there only cost me $1000.
Yeah I'll have to keep an eye on the outlet. Apparently they can get fried pretty quickly since the cheaper ones like this aren't meant to handle continuous current for hours
Wait, are you saying the random chance replacement of our home heat pump and adding a subpanel that just so happened to be the right amperage for adding a charging station at a later date doesn't just happen for everyone? 😅
Right, wish it were that easy! 😂
Mine is in the basement not in the garage.
Can I get a ev charger installed? My home was build in 1972
Probably going to cost me 1000's
So regardless, you have to upgrade your circuit breaker? I have a house that is built in the 1800s.
The main cost here was running an electrical feed out to my detached garage. If you already have sufficient electric run out there, then it will be much cheaper.
Was your main panel big enough to allow a 100 amp sub panel ?
Yes
Darn! That's expensive 🫰!!
Are you thinking about a Solar install on your house or garage?
Possibly, but will likely be further down the road. Still lots going on personally that would delay a project like that for a few years.
We're also thinking of building our "dream home" eventually, and I'd rather put money towards that. But we'll see!
Whom 1972 house I will have 10k set aside 😢
Not likely that expensive. Pricing is related to how far your electrical panel is from where you wish to charge. If you use 30 amps or less for charging (works for most people), you can likely run a conductor a good amount of distance without too much concern, provided the wire doesn't have to run through finished spaces. Then the electrician simply wires the conductor with breaker in panel and EVSE at charging location. Could be as little as $500 if an easy installation.
Aye the mad lad posted! 🫡
Would be super nice to have a garage, just like you, I’m living in an apartment right now and just taking advantage of free level 2 chargers. Hopefully one day though. Keep the uploads coming man.
Haha finally! Free level 2 isn't bad, I'm definitely paying for the convenience here
