  • Here is a video on how your Distributorless Ignition works. I cover ignition coil packs, coil on plug and coil near plug set ups in this video. Also how the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors aid the ECU or ICM in timing the spark for your engine.

    Great my friend! Nothing like a practical explanation of THE MOST COMMON ELECTRONIC IGNITION SYSTEMS OF NOW DAYS!!!
    Everybody only explains the old points 1 coil systems of the past.

    Man I learn so many interesting things in your videos. Instead of being completely basic, you add little bits of info like the wiring and stuff which just makes it way more interesting when you open the hood of your car and see those exact same things. Thanks for making such quality videos sir. Thumbs up and subscribed.

    Thanks a lot for your explanations for DIS. One question in my mind, how do we can adjust ignition timing in DIS cars. (As we know, in conventional car we can do this by rotate the distributor to adjust ignition timing). Thank you very much for your further explanation.

    Have you ever seen all 8 coils firing continuously with the key on?
    This started when our mechanic put a new starter on a 99 Corvette C5. Apparently he connected a wire that didn't belong and had to cut it fast when things started smoking.
    Now it has no COM no crank and continuous sparking on all 8 coils. It also has the DIS.

    Great videos..i love them and learning a lot of things..keep it up!!!
    i got a question about this video on DIS..got a 2003 montero sport limited 3.5L with a different setup..it has a shared coil with only 2 pins and an ICM with two connectors..one with three pins and the other with 6 pins so im thinking the 3 pins get the power from the ignition switch and the 6 pins deliver the spark to the individual coils. Is this correct? BTW, the two coils are giving sparks to the plugs but the 3-6 coil does not. Any ideas would be gratly appeciated.

    i have a question for you i see alot of techs that use a scope for all their diagnostics what about if you don't have a scope can i still do diagnostics without it will it be harder without a scope and can you do CAN vehicles without a scope

    Ah, excellent that answered a lot of questions for me. Especially the part about spark being generated in pairs. One to a cylinder at the top of its compression stroke and the other to a cylinder at the top of its exhaust stroke. Thus the spark to the cylinder at the top of its exhaust stroke is wasted.
    So, I'm getting a cylinder 1 misfire on my 2008 dodge caravan equipped with the V6 3.3 liter engine with 180,000 miles. I already changed plugs & wires but code still appears. I was considering changing the coil pack next but based on your video, I would think if a bad coil was responsible, I would get a misfire on both cylinder 1&4. Would you agree?

    TIA for the video, my bike operates on DIS with stick coil on plug( your top right drawing board). It broke down yesterday, error code shows stick coil 1& 3 shorted or open circuit. What confuses me is each coil are individuals, why are 1 & 3 be shorted or open circuit? They aren't sharing the return circuit. The positive wire are definitely fine as they are shared and the 4th plug are producing arc. Help!

    So, In these new Coil on Plug ignition system, there is no such thing as "setting the timing belt'"??? The timing is now control by the computer!

    • @myRatchets
      @myRatchets  8 років тому

      +dana miller well the timing belt timing setting is done mechanically when you replace the belt, ignition (spark) timing on these systems is done by your computer, yes.

    I've had 40 year old cars and nothing wrong with the (1) ignition coil. I've seen 5 year old cars with burnt coil packs needing replacement of the whole unit. This is garbage intended to cost more maintenance money. DIS run by computer is a lousy anchor that won't function or run as an engine without computer controller.
