  • The Sawyer Insect Repellent clothing and gear spray (permethrin) is tested against thousands of hungry mosquitoes in the Canadian wilderness. The treated clothing was washed once and then tested again. Watch and find out if I am protected from getting eaten alive! Caution, this video was shot during prime mosquito time. Not recommended for some viewers.
    The new PiActive brand spray on insect repellent with 20% Picaridin is also tested. Find out if it lives up to the advertised claim of being a long-lasting, strong but gentle 12-hour protective shield against mosquitoes. Have we found an effective alternative to DEET repellents? Let us hope so or we might need to buy new camera equipment.

    I really like your videos my friend - no b/s and easy to understand - there are so many companies claiming this and that, I remember the battery operated anti mozzie gadget video. Thanks so much for suffering in the name of science, us outdoor types love kit that works and you are helping a lot of folk choose wisely. Had to subscribe to see more of you and your videos. We used permethrin in Afghanistan, Africa, and other locales. It seemed to work very well. It also repels sand fleas which carry a serious skin condition disease called leishmaniasis. A lot of Afghani children has rashes and worse on their faces. We used a US Army product that you mixed with a little water and then soaked an item on clothing in a big ziploc type bag overnight, then dried out completely the next day. This made the clothing good for life in repelling bugs.
    Permethrin is also used in flea treatments for dogs. The kind you can buy at Canadian Tire, etc
    I ordered a 10% jug of the stuff for less than the cost of the Sawyer stuff. I'll dilute it down properly and apply it to more of my clothes.
    I have another Picaridin product called Natrapel and it seems to work OK. I got it off the internet from the US last summer.
    Thanks for another great review!

      Chris Collier Another viewer in my last mosquito review video recommended the flea treatment idea but I could not find the brand they recommended. What is the brand name of the stuff at Canadian Tire? I would like to check it out. Thanks for sharing the info with all of us. Awesome.

      EconoChallenge I don't have any left but I think is was something like Harz? They come in small containers and I can't remember what %; so unsure if you could add them to water to make an effective spray or soak....

      Chris Collier I read the label online an it says it has a residual action of 28 days. The sawyer spay has a residual action of up to 42 days. I wonder why the difference. I am guessing you would dilute this stuff down to 0.5% by adding 20 pints of water. If my math is right then you are getting more than 20X the applications for about the same money as one 12 oz bottle of the sawyer spray. That is huge savings!!!!

    Great review. Nothing beats testing like you do it. Thank you for this honest review. My experience with permethrin is positive .....excellent for outer clothing, the outside of tents and ground cloths. However, be careful to never put on clothing that has been sprayed with permethrin before it has thoroughly dried. Thoroughly, thoroughly dried. I made the mistake once, and wore the clothing for three days continuously....and on the fourth day developed a serious rash and chemical burns that took months to go away. My reaction might not be typical, but I am now cautious about how I use it. I will spray outer shirts, but never again an undershirt that has continuous close contact with my skin.

    Hey Jeep another good one. Wow they were bad in there and I guess if you are going to do a review that's the place. The Sawyer spray is pretty reasonable if you actually buy it in the states. However it has come to my attention there are substitutes. My buddy says go to a feed and supply store and get the stuff for horses. It comes in a big bottle and is way more reasonably priced. Absorbine makes one apparently. Just a thought.

    • @EconoChallenge
      @EconoChallenge  9 років тому

      A J Taylor Great suggestion. I am looking into this as a few other viewers have suggested the same thing. It is much cheaper to go that way as long as you dilute it to .5% permethrin. Not sure what I should use to dilute it.

      @ajtaylor560 9 років тому +1

      EconoChallenge Mike my friend says he doesn't dilute it as it's going on his clothes and he lets it dry prior to putting them on so it really never touches his skin. He claims it's the best on ticks, not a one this year. He lives south of Ottawa and has a hobby farm so normally sees lots in the hay meadows.

    I remember reading an article that appeared in Backpacker Magazine concerning mosquito repellent. The article appeared in Backpacker several years ago. So the information is very likely out of date. I suppose there are several new repellents which are available.
    The people at Backpacker took various tests and gave what I believe is an honest review. They came to the conclusion that most of the repellents were about the same. There are some interesting things which they discovered. Mosquitoes don't have eyes and they zero in on people through evaporation of body moisture and in particular breath.
    They assert that when one eats garlic - the chemicals in garlic actually act as a repellent. They came to the conclusion that mosquitos don't like garlic on ones breath and in the blood stream. Whether this is actually true - I cannot say - but I found the information fascinating. I'd really love to know if they are correct in their analysis.

    • @EconoChallenge
      @EconoChallenge  7 років тому +3

      One of the hikers in our group put garlic to the test during one of our trips in Northern Ontario. The part of our province where mosquitoes and black flies are out almost all summer. He ate 5 cloves of raw chopped garlic and then we started our trip. We tried to compare the amount of bug activity around him vs the rest of the group while the garlic was still in his system. It was a very subjective analysis for sure but none of the 4 people in the group noticed any difference. One thing was for sure. The garlic kept the other three hikers a safe distance upwind as often as possible.

    • @Artsartisan
      @Artsartisan 7 років тому +1

      I was rather suspicious after reading the article in Backpacker. It really wasn't a scientific study but very subjective. The participants were members of the staff of Backpacker and a few guest columnists.
      Here is a tidbit of information from the same magazine: There was an article concerning a canyon in Arizona where a large population of hummingbirds would migrate. My brother was in the army stationed outside of Sierra Vista. He lived off base at the bottom of Ramsey Canyon. He was the one who informed me of the large number of hummingbirds in the vicinity of the canyon. Hence, I knew that the author of the article was speaking of Ramsey Canyon. My brother and some of his friends took me through a portion of the canyon. It is very narrow with a stream running through it. The author of the article spoke of walking through the canyon at night armed with an ultra-violet lamp. He mentioned that the walls of the canyon were peppered with scorpions. Their exo-skeleton would glow a greenish hue when exposed to black light.
      I am glad that I read the article AFTER visiting the canyon and not before hand.

    Allot of how the repellent works depends on the carrier. Some are water base and some are oil. The oil base ones last much longer than water because it evaporates much faster. Bug Shield is all soy based carrier oil and will out last the water base ones. Also any repellent will not keep 100% of bugs away. They are made to cut down bites dramatically.

    Hi Jeep! In my experience the Sawyer Peremethrin doesn't harm clothing or equipment and will last through a couple of machine washings if you wash with cold water. I have no track record with the other repellant you were using. I use something called Herbal Armor as a repellant to put on my skin and it seems to work pretty well and doesn't have the nasties associated with Deet. I will admit that most of the areas where I hike are hillier than the area you were in and have fewer major mosquito breeding grounds.

    I realize this video is a couple of years old now. What is your go-to product nowadays to prevent mosquito bites on skin? I've been using a 20% Picaridin and it works quite well. I also found an herbal spray that was mostly catnip, and it worked unbelievably well, but I cannot find it anymore. Lemon eucalyptus sensitizes my skin, giving me constant chills long after it dries. Another thing that seemed to help was showering with red, Carbolic soap. Vitamin B1 taken in 100 mg doses (1 per day) is supposed to also make you taste bad to the little buggers. And Permethrin is available as a dip for clothing. With dipping, you don't miss areas like you can with a spray. My concern is that it is on the inner layer of clothing against your skin... But it is supposedly safe once the treated clothing has dried after treatment. IIRC, it supposedly lasts for dozens of washes.

      I am using Off eucalyptus on my skin. I have not noticed a chill factor. I use permethrine clothing spray on my socks, pants and shirts. I believe it is safe after it has dried. But how do we really know if that is true? Finally I still wear a bug net to keep them off my head.

    At 3:06 what do you mean propaganda in the box? It looks like it works as stated by Sawyer & in your video. Was there something miss leading by Sawyer?

      +J Doe Good question. The sawyer product did work as advertised. Unlike the other products that I tested before I did this video. So my comment was a bit misleading in hindsight but at the time I was very skeptical of the claims. Due to my previous experience with products that over promise and under-perform. Sawyer is not one of those products.

      EconoChallenge It is a good video showing how it works. Now just need something for the skin that is not covered. The best as you do use is Off!

    Permethrin works remarkably well the only downside is that if you have a cat you must keep all clothing treated with permethrin away from them since it is deadly toxic to felines , a single exposure may be fatal , however it is safe for dogs and all other mammals .

      Adan Cortes If the spay has dried on the clothing do you still need to be concerned about exposure to cats? I am asking because my friend has a cat and I don`t want to harm it.

      EconoChallenge Sadly yes , as you have seen yourself permethrin remains active after totally drying out and even after the garments being washed , have a cat myself and that's the reason I can't take advantage of this product , I know that after washing the clothes the amount of permethrin will decrease but not sure what concentration is harmfull and what is relatively safe so I am not taking any chances .

    I had a similar experience with picaridin by sawyers. The pyrethrin, works famously. I buy the 36 percent concentration from Amazon. I pay 30.00 USD . Mix with water to refill my spray bottle. Saves so much money. As a hunter and fisherman I highly recommend giving it a try .

    Picardin’s true benefit is in its tick deterrence. It is only one of two approved sprays, the other being deet, for black legged ticks and it can safely be applied on synthetic clothes without worry about it eating it away.

    Does Piactive work for deer flies or black flies?

      I can say for sure it does not work for deer flies. I have not tried it for black flies.

    I have used Siphotrol on my clothes to repel mosquitoes and ticks for the past two summers. Works well.

      Louise Hiker I have looked through the stores but could not find anything that had only permethrin on the label. The link you added is a big help. I am going to have to try my vet and see if they carry the same stuff. The other alternative is diluting the stuff they sell to put on livestock. It is 10% permethrin! Diluted that will treat a lot of clothing.

      Your vets can probably order some in for you, if they do not carry it. Possibly ditto for any large animal product, but I am less familiar with those nor how to dilute them. I do know some stuff cannot be diluted with water, if oil soluble for example. I hope you will do a review video comparing the Siphotrol to the Sawyer product.
