That was a perfect test environment. I have another company now that wants to contend for the best in a similar competition this year. Not enough bugs yet though.
The Repel lemon eucalyptus lasted about 2 hours for me, but it was really muggy, so I was sweating a bunch. It might last longer in better weather. It's not as irritating to my asthma as the DEET. We have some pretty thirsty bugs here in Texas, and it worked against the annoying gnats and flies too!
I really like eucalyptus oil. Not only it repels mosquitoes, it also has multiple health benefits, can act as headache reliever, makes your chest and stomach area feel better when applied, has calming scent, helps clear runny nose when you sniffed it. Also, when the oil eventually evaporates and dries off after like many hours later and the effects wears off, your skin doesn't feel oily.
@@naturecallsoutdoors Yes, in the composition of the product it said eucalyptus oil 100%. The brand is Cap Lang if you're curious. It's a product from Indonesian pharmacy company who is very well known in producing this kind of stuffs.
@@rcs9358 I'm not sure. I'll say just apply it on your skin, not only that's what it's made for, but also I think the smell would be too overwhelming and you will go through a lot of the oil if you apply it to your clothing cause they will absorb it
Thank you for this review. As a new father of two, 2 year old and a 5 month old, going outside more often for playtime will increase the older they get.. so! Thank you for helping my family out and I’m now deciding the natural vs Deet.
I've never tried DEET, I have tried Cutter's Lemon Eucalyptus. It seems to work well for me. Smells strong though and no idea how long it lasts for sure. I'm usually not outside long enough to find out, but I know it's hard to wash off, so it might last awhile. I also noticed that Cutters repels fleas in flea infested areas. You can watch them jump on your socks then jump right back off.
Spraying some repellent on a glove and rubbing it on yourself is an effective all over application that uses a lot less repellent so you get more bang for your buck.
If you're in South or Central America or wherever malaria is a problem, don't try to be a new age eco warrior and screw around with holistic all-natural products. Go for the 85% DEET. Malaria is no joke
As he mentioned, Lemon Eucalyptus works fine without DEET... but as always with any product preceed with caution and at your own risk. DEET can cause neurological effects like seizures, uncoordinated movements, agitation, hypertonia, ataxia, and restlessness DEET can cause insomnia, mood changes, clumsiness, disorientation, and coma
Cutters spray is good, but it does attract bees. I'd recently went camping near Mammoth Mountain, and had Cutters spray with me. Sprayed a ton on my body during the mosquito hours, but the bees (yellow jacket) kept hovering around me. So, there's a thought.
Yup. Best option is to make your own essentail oils spray, or rub-in skin oils (with diluted olive oil). Lemon, orange, citronella, sage, rosemary, thyme, oregano, eucalpytus, camphor, cedar, pine, fir, peppermint, spearmint, (horse) mint, ... all (or in combination) makes great anti-bugger (bug off you little biting females !) formulas. And if you carry in bottle, then can put drops into candles or spray/drop into campfire (for the vapors) and they will keep the bugs away. Same for spraying your hammock or netting, and all is good.
Had an event in Santa Cruz mountains, didn't make a campfire, and those insane little vampire bitches !!!, they were attempting to drill right through my Levis ! Was a fight and John 100:skeeters 0 (actually found there was 4 who drilled through. Insane. Needed my essential oils, and there would be no bugger problems. Be careful applying some of these to your skin since they are photosensitizers (make you more prone to sunburn), and they can eat up synthetic fabrics.

My wife went fishing to a lake in Canada once where the mosquitos were thicker and more aggressive than we ever thought possible. (They were actually biting us through our clothes). Absolutely the only thing that would repel them is 98% deet that I just happen to bring along. The local guy who owned the cabin/fishing resort told me that deet is the only thing that works and it has to be at least 30%. ( Brand names are unimportant...its' the % of deet) All the other non deet alternatives that people had were ineffective.
Nice video Bruce, While in the Marine Corp in the early 80's we used Skin So Soft from Avon and seemed to work pretty good. I dont know how it compare's to today's product.
Man fuck mosquitoes. My friend got bitten by one with dengue in 4th grade and I didn’t see her for half the school year. I had a crush on her so that made me sad😢
I spent all last summer doing forest inventory in WV. I only used that lemon stuff. I’d spray it heavy in my hands then rub my arms and neck down. Around lunch I’d put on more. I thought it worked great, you smell like a flower all the time which is nice but the loggers did have a field day with that.
Boil a couple teaspoons of ground up organic tobacco in half a gallon of water. Strain it. Then you can bottle it up as natural body spray bug repellent. Works great without all the chemicals. Except a natural nicotine but that's what keeps the bugs away. The small amount of tobacco in half a gallon of water shouldn't have any effects of nicotine seeping through your skin or causing addiction. Just get some organic tobacco from your local tobacco shop. I've even used Gambler pipe tobacco processed with less nicotine. Lifehack I learned from an Eagle's instructor when I was younger.
@@naturecallsoutdoors It kind of worked. But the yellow flies are devilish and I settled on the strongest Deet I could find (40% Deet from Repel, available at Dollar General). Good tip Kristy. I was getting eaten before the treatment of either and would have bathed in it. Glad you hear you like the Cutters.

That was my issue as well. The newer DEET isn't so bad, but still smells a bit rank.
