Play with me and switch between IMPROVISATION and COMPING!
We are going to be jamming together on this great tune by John Coltrane, as if we were in a live situation!!
The original version of EQUINOX from the album COLTRANE'S SOUND is a C sharp minor blues, but the song is often payed in Cm, as in this case.
You can DOWNLOAD my transcription of the theme here:
    www.pietroball...
I suggest you memorize the melody and the chord progression.
We start with an 8 bar intro on the Cm chord, then you can play the theme a couple of times, before starting to improvise.
We are then going to SOLO for a few chorus each.
At the end you can play the theme again one more time, repeting the last phrase 3 times as a CODA.
VERY IMPORTANT: pay close attention to the drums, especially when you are comping and I'm soloing, because that's going to be your main reference for the rhythm and for the structure.
This the the most important exercise: always LISTEN!
    IMPROVISATION TIPS
Depending on your level, you can simply use a Cm pentatonic, or add more complex sounds.
For example I'm often using a dorian sound on the minor chords, a lydian dominant on the Ab7 and a superlocrian on the G7. Usually I also transform the Cm7 into C7alt on the last bar before moving to the Fm7.
    COMPING
Choose the style you prefer! From simple straight chords played in quarter notes, to the use of some seventh chords inversions, or extensions. Until the use of the walking bass + chords technique, if you already know how to do that (I am planning to cover this very interesting topic in the future in the lessons of my guitar course).
This interactive play along is best for guitar, piano, bass, vibes, or any other harmonic instrument... But it can also be used by saxophone or trumpet players, clarinet etc. Horns players: you should play a counterpoint line when I'm soloing!
