How To Travel For FREE In Pittsburgh / Light Rail Train (The T)

  • While researching for my Pittsburgh trip, I discovered that the Steel City
has a subway / Light Rail transportation system. It's known as the "T" and believe it or not, you can actually ride it for free. So in this video we are going to cover some of the history of this rail line and take a ride in the "free zone". Six stops within the downtown area that you can ride for free as often as you'd like. Although for most people, this is just a mode of transportation, but for me, I find it very interesting and enjoyable to ride and film. Are you ready to ride the "T"? If so, come along with me! Enjoy

FYI the buses no longer run in a free zone, you now pay as soon as you get on no matter where you are. The T still runs the "old" way, where the city is free and past that, you pay getting on when inbound, pay when getting off outbound.

Great video JP, it’s So strange to see the subway and the subway stations empty because I used to work downtown and lived in the South Hills and I took the T in every day and I had to stand because it was so crowded, it’s so empty now because of the pandemic, people are not working downtown at the moment, they’re still working from home! Great video! I live south of the city so I ride the T all the time. If you ever get the chance to explore the rest of the network I highly recommend it - I like getting a day pass ($7 for unlimited rides all day on the trains, buses, and incline) if I know I’m going to be riding around a lot.
There are 3 lines that head into the South Hills running to two different termini. The Red Line has a small section that runs on streets in Beechview, it runs through Beechview, Dormont, and Mount Lebanon while the Blue/Silver Lines run through Overbrook. They meet back up in Castle Shannon and run together into Bethel Park before splitting back off at Washington Junction. The Blue and Red Lines run to South Hills Village (a popular shopping mall and also where the railyard for the vehicles is located), and the Silver Line splits off to run through Bethel Park to Library near the county line. The outer stretch of the Silver Line is also the last active portion of the network that uses original Pittsburgh Railways infrastructure, with jointed rail track and original wayside signals. It’s a very scenic trip too as the route is heavily wooded and mostly secluded from development.
There is an additional line that runs on streets over Mount Washington, bypassing Station Square, referred to as the Allentown Line. It isn’t normally used anymore but any time they’re doing track work or there’s a disabled vehicle in the Mount Washington tunnel they will reactivate the line to use as a bypass. As someone else pointed out there are also extra tracks that split off at Steel Plaza to run to the Amtrak station, but these also normally aren’t used. Port Authority is thinking about restoring passenger service on both of those stretches in the near future.
Beyond South Hills Village track continues for an extra mile and a half to Drake Road, service on that stretch ended in 1999. Beyond there and Library the lines used to continue further south as interurban streetcars to Washington PA and Charleroi, they were cut back to the current ends in 1953. Many Port Authority bus routes and some regional buses (Freedom Transit’s Metro Commuter and Mid-Mon Valley Transit’s Commuter A) basically follow the old streetcar routes, and in some cases still have the same route number and destination as the streetcar route it replaced (like the 39 Brookline, 44 Knoxville, and 48 Arlington).
Unfortunately there is no longer a free-fare zone for buses in town, as the buses use a pay-as-you-get-on policy regardless of which direction you’re traveling, so as of 2021 the free fare zone is only for the T. Let me know if there’s any other info you want to hear about! I have some extensive footage of the light rail lines outside of downtown Pittsburgh on my side channel, Sebi’s Random Stuff.

Great video! Thank you for making it. I live about 3 miles north of the stadiums and the North Shore. On game days, the parking lots and decks nearby are packed and cost $25-40. I’ll drive down to the First Avenue garage where it’s pretty empty. Parking is $5-10. Then take the free T subway to the North Shore destinations. (There is free parking at the casino, but they crack down on people parking there and leaving the premises.) The train cars are often crammed with people those days.

I rode the south hills trolley lines in the mid-1960's Primarily the line to Castle Shannon and Drake but also the 32/46 line to Mt. Lebanon. Back then they rsn PCC streetcars on all of the lines although the cars to Drake and Library were modified SLIGHTLY.
Note every station still has a low-level platform as the PCC cars couldn't handle the high level platforms. Conversely every modern two-car set has a street-level door at each right-front corner for low-level platforms and on-street stops. There was a period when both the old PCC cars and the new articulaed cars were operating!

I've lived and worked in Pittsburgh all my life, and made daily use of the T. Those unused tracks at Steel Plaza are the tracks that run to Penn Station. Those tracks haven't been used in years. The Steel Plaza Station was built to allow for expansion to and beyond Penn Station, but that never happened, so half of Steel Plaza is unused. Blue, Red and Silver all use the tracks that were active on the day you were there. NO trains currently use the other side of the station. Great video.

As a youngster, I rode the New York subways often and although they are very big and noisy and crowded, they
    were a fun adventure.
    However,
Pittsburgh seems really sedate, it's like travelling to the past,
I've been all over Washington D.C., which is also a great subway.
Philly is another place that makes subway riding fun, but
Pittsburgh has it's own style. Loved it!

Sometimes, when I have business in the City, I park on the Northshore and the take the T over. I miss the T. Did you know the Northshore stop is fairly new? Also, the tracks in the back at Steel Plaza have not been used in a very long time like 20 years or so. Those tracks go out to the station where Amtrak stops. Again, great job!

That look like you had a good time. 👍 And I well agree that if there's a chance to ride the rails and it's free o ya 😁 thank you Jp for sharing and have a great evening. 👍

Great information! Anytime you can get a free train ride....😊 Reminds me of when you get to Chicago on Amtrak and the train follows the river, then under the city into the black abyss to Union Station.

That was fun! My first subway ride! Lol! Thanks! I really like it. If I ever were going to go there, I would use the subway system. Looked clean. FREE! I like that. Thank you! 😊👯🍀✌

Next time, take a ride to Dormont. The T runs right down the street like a trolley

Is there any potential plans for PRT to extend the light rail T? I would really like the T to travel to the North Hills Ross Township. and also, the T should travel beyond the Allegany station and should no longer be the northern terminus. it should travel to Manchester/Chateu and further along to Emsworth.

I gotta question cause I’m going to the game on Monday, when coming back from Allegheny Station does it automatically take you to back to First Avenue Station or do you gotta stop at Steel Plaza Station first on the way back?

Yes, a portion of the Red Line in Beechview is street running as well as the former Brown Line through Allentown. However the Brown Line has been used for a detour route since 2012 if the Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel is closed for some reason

I would say so. Depends on what area you're riding, but just practice common sense and general safety for all public transportation.

Each car has an area with fold up seats for a wheelchair or scooter. The Underground stations have elevators.

Bernie. Lol if you're not a crook you got nothing to worry about. I don't want to hear the history about trains! Do they have any stops worth going to? Looks empty so I think not. Guess I'm lucky. I have a bus stop right across the street. But it's only for grocery stores.
