Pseudoscope Kit

  • The Pseudoscope is an intriguing optical device. As well as expanding the apparent distance between the eyes by a factor of 3, the Pseudoscope also switches the input to the eyes, so the left eye becomes the right, and vice versa. This makes space reverse, so that distant objects appear closer, objects which cast shadows appear behind and not in front of the shadow. In this sense, pseudoscopic vision fights normal vision. The scientist Wheatstone said that 'with a Pseudoscope we have a glance, as it were, into another visible world, in which external objects and our internal perceptions have no longer their habitual relation to each other.'

      I built one of these. You have to see it with your own eyes. The effect is that concave objects are perceived as convex, and vice-versa.
      So a ball looks like it curves INWARDS from all directions, and a bowl looks like a sphere. It's very weird!

    • @grandillusions
      @grandillusions  8 років тому +329

      The effect requires the user to have stereo vision (which the camera does not have) and the effect happens in your head, as your brain tries to make sense of what it is seeing. Wish we could show the effect!

    • @jacksonpercy8044
      @jacksonpercy8044 8 років тому +14

      Ahh, that's a shame. I suppose the effect could work in a Virtual Reality format, but not everyone has a VR device and you're probably unable to record in 3D anyway.

    • @northbearNL
      @northbearNL 8 років тому +1

      Doesn't the camera take the two mirrors and still makes the image complete? We could just go into fullscreen and see the same effect or am I totally wrong.

    The plastic on the back of the pieces is how the stock comes. When cut in the laser cutter, the plastic backing may get soot on it. The hexagonal pattern on the plastic covering is the soot marks where the piece sat on the laser cutting bed.

      Depressed? Or sad? If it's a crippling mental illness that makes every day of your life a step closer to killing yourself, your depressed, if you had a hard few days, your sad.

      +nicynodle2
      well it's not really your place to ask mate, but i suppose my first comment was a bit to broad maybe, so what the hell.
      there are many different stages to depression, just labelling them as "sad" or "depressed" is a bit ignorant, and they don't always lead to suicide, not if you have the time to deal with it and get some decent help. through a combination of therapy and correct medication you can lead a very happy, full life with all forms of depression, and even possibly come of the meds one day.
      I would encourage all people with depression to seek that kind of help, it will work, but you have to let it.
      unfortunately a lot of people don't take that route, and would rather choose denial. that's what I did for a long time, and it lead to me disconnecting from all my friends and family, suicidal thoughts were becoming more frequent.... but I was always was able to hide it from the people around me, I never spoke about it to anyone, so i didn't know what to do.
      See i was never taught that these feelings could possibly be medical condition that effects a hole bunch of crap in the brain. so I got some medical advice, took the advice very seriously. and now it's a couple of years later, and I feel I'm doing well. I just some family issues are have pulled me down a bit lately. but I be alright.
      thanks for your concern friend! =)
      Sorry for the very long comment. =/

    whenever i watch tims videos, i feel happy because hes an aged (not saying old man) british (im guessing he is english/british) man that shows off toys. and i feel like i want to cherish tim and let him live forever, so that he can do this more. his vocabulary and accent make all the videos better. just watching him take his time pealing off the stickers brought me some sence of joy. i hope that this lasts for a long time because i dont want these videos to end.

    Hi Tim, another great video; I made my own pseudoscope with two roof prisms salvaged from dead prismatic binoculars, but of course it offers a very narrow angle of view. Another point: when you fix the tripod bush into the base plate, it's better to have it going from the inside out: the tripod bush seems to be a standard 3/8" to 1/4" Whitworth adapter, and if it is fitted from the outside in, fitting it to a tripod top would basically pull it right out again; fitted from the inside, the tripod screw would tighten it further.

I was newly living with my then gf for two weeks at the time of my original comment, and it quickly became a nightmare. We broke up 4 months later and were stuck living together for the next two and a half years. It wasn't pretty living at all.
      Towards the end of 2018, I met this woman at my new job. We began talking and instantly hit it off. After a few weeks, I felt like it was right to let her know about my living situation. A few months later, I was packing my things when my ex was at work, broke my lease, and my new lady and I moved in together.
      We just celebrated our 4 year anniversary last month, have our cats, my family loves her and our lives are going great right now.
      As for my ex, she tried finding me, tried suing me(didn't work), and last I found out, she had to leave our area and move back home.

      @@thedarkrocker333 I'm really glad to hear things have gotten better for you my friend. Been in a miserable relationship is absolutely soul crushing, and it appears all to common. Legal problems are awful too, you kind of get the emotion that your life is paused because it's direction and future are in the hands of someone who really couldn't care less about you, and with the law it is impossible to apply logic to what the decision maybe as there is no room for logic in law. But yes, happy it's worked out, it sounds like you are happy in your relationship, and I think people need to be in a loving relationship to feel complete and with purpose. Best of luck for the future and keep moving forward, no matter what.

    I have no idea what it is about this particular episode but it sounds oddly AMSR-like, especially the parts where Tim is assembling the parts or is removing the plastic coatings from the base. It gives off this oddly calming effect to it. I suppose that if someone were to actually purchase this particular kit it would be more oddly satisfying to build it rather than use it. The little popup wand included is also oddly satisfying, the mechanism used to make it extend out has quite and enjoyable vibe to it.
    Also, I happen to have that same Sphere, and just by itself it is an amazing mechanical toy would recommend.
