Charles dowding is all you need, before breaking your back digging everything. Not required. But if you enjoy it, go for it 💪 i am closing in on my first allotment autumn and getting compost down for next year..
Yes you're right, especially with the amount of weeds I have! I'm planning to no dig the second plot as we speak. And compost is definitely something I have to get good at!
No dig only works if you have no nasty perennial weeds, have been no dig for over 32 years in New Zealand. Still use herbicides if needed, the big thing is to make compost, start by collecting your household fruit and vegetable scraps, take them to the plot once a week and ever trench compost or add to a heap.
@@TomsAllotmentAdventures leave them and they will grow shoots (chits) plant them chit side up, you cannot eat green potatoes but it’s ok to grow from them. They turn green when exposed to daylight.
Thanks Julie, I've just googled it and nothing is coming up. I'll have to ask next time I go to the allotment or garden centre. Thanks for the recommendation!
Great video Tom! I've just taken possession of a plot about the same size as yours and at the clearing stage as well - i've found a mattock really helpful for breaking up the tough ground, one side pickaxe and another similar to your clearing hoe/a small spade. Might be worth looking into as your ground looks like concrete! I've also learnt i need to buy good quality tools, already broken a stainless steel spade Very jealous you've got a little shed, we're not allowed them on mine so need to find an alternative way to store everything down there rather than carting it back and forth every time i go down. Looking forward to more vids!
Hi Chaz! Thanks for your comment and kind words of advice! Haha concrete it is! A Mattock looks like a right weapon! Will definitely be considering this for next season/the future. I don't know how you feel but I find it very satisfying/addictive breaking up the ground and churning it up! Who needs a gym... I'm also very interested in investing so I've subbed and I'll be making my way through your videos in the next couple of weeks too!
@@TomsAllotmentAdventures breaking up the ground is so satisfying! Not so satisfying is having weeds growing in some of the areas I've already cleared again hahaha! I think my entire YT suggested videos is now gardening/allotment related which is at least helping me along work out what I'm going to do next. Compost bin is high on my priority list. Thanks for the sub, my style is definitely not for the feint of heart so I would mostly just recommend index funds for investing, but depends on your risk appetite and time horizons
Bloody weeds! Honestly. Absolutely, youtube University has all the advice we need! Haha. I am possibly be using the compost bin next to my allotment... (There's no one in it and the people who manage the allotment have said I could) I've been enjoying your videos! You're very good at talking to camera. Index fund's it is then!
Have just watched all your videos of your progress & boy I wish that feeling of starting an allotment and not knowing anything! Trust me you'll be shocked by next year of how much knowledge you gain. Good luck Tom! I'm sure by next year you'll be all ready for spring! Any help I can offer. Give me an email! Good luck with the channel! Danny 🌱
Danny! Thanks so much for watching and the well wishes for spring. It definitely sounds like I need someone like you in my corner - I really don't know anything! 😂 I will be subscribing to your channel. Thanks again! Happy Gardening! 🥳

Get some broadbeans in the ground! They'll grow over winter and fertilise the soil
Music to my ears! We've just planted some. Thanks for commenting!
You’re doing a good job Tom slow and sure wins the race. Keep your tiny potatoes they will root (chit) and you can plant them back in.
Thanks Julie, appreciate your comment. Do I just leave them? One is going green. 😬

That Winchester Hoe is the best tool for clearing

@ the tool you have is the Winchester Hoe probably just a name my family know it has.
Looks like your potatoes might be ready to dig up. The foliage dies back when ready to harvest
Ahh I didn't know that! 🤦♂️🤦♂️Thank you! I'll harvest them as soon as I can!
