As was stated, he was a very good artist. One of my best friends who was also my producer played drums with Captain Beefheart for many tours and Van Vliet painted a portrait of him that still hangs over his mantel.
You haven’t heard the real Captain Beefheart yet! He was a slightly insane genius. First listen to a song called Sun Zoom Spark, then Big eyed beans from Venus, all from the same album. Please only use the studio recordings . You won’t be disappointed.
Oh Harri, now you did it. Although Captain Beefheart has been in my top five all time favorites, I never recommend because I figure no body would ever bother. Until now. Here’s a short list; Big Eyed Beans from Venus, Click Clack, Electricity, Crazy Little Thing, Clear Spot and Ditty Wah Ditty. That’s just a sample box. Good work Harri. It doesn’t sound like you get your selections by taking poles. So, how do you choose what you play?
Harri, not commented for a while but have really enjoyed your last few reviews, on Jeff Healy and Captain Beef heart, I know you prioritise recommendations from your patrons but even if you have a chance privately have a listen to one of the most unusual voices around in Tom Waits with "Tom Traubert's Blues" I can guarantee you will be blown away. Keep up the good work pal.
Oh Harri, so you like the Guitar sound, Hmm! lend an ear to Frank Zappa´s Watermelon in Easter hay, Beefheart and Zappa school friends, and music mates.
This is from the album "Bluejeans and Moonbeams". His band had basically fallen apart by this time, he was able to gather some new musicians together, and they threw together some simple tracks that were instrument and jam heavy just to get the album made. Even with all that, there are some extremely powerful moments in these songs. This song breaks my heart every time. The White Stripes cover another song from this album called "The Party of Special Things to Do". And several bands cover the song "Observatory Crest" which I strongly recommend. ua-cam.com/video/hfX5Ymxf4Rg/v-deo.html But yes, as others have noted, this is very different from his signature jagged sound, or even his more bluesy styles.
At the start the chord progression made me think of It's a Man's, Man's Man's World. See also The Residents. In the 70's I got as far as Zappa, but never as far as Beefheart. This is pretty good though.
Love Captain Beefheart, you could try something off the Ghost Of Saturday Night album by Tom Waites. There is nobody that can paint a picture with his voice the way Tom Waites can.
Jesus help me! My best friend and i had to listen 24-7 to him as my X was friends with him. We would cry he was so bad! That's a actual song he's singing..
The real tragedy is that this is like listening to nursery rhymes compared to his more esteemed output. At this stage he was very clearly unhappy and being manipulated as an artist (he was a genuine artist and painter later in life). It's a shame...
This isn't what he really sounded like, listen to I'm going to booglarize you or on the my o my from the early 1970's to get more an idea what he was like, and even those 2 are easy songs of his, good reaction though as no one reacts to captain beefheart, trout mask replica is now considered a work of genius although that wasn't what was said at the time it came out in 1969
I always recommend that song as the best introduction to Beefheart. Check it out, but you can't react to it because it is protected by Copyright, however, there is a version on French TV from the same tour that you can use.
This is NOT a good intro to Captain Beefheart. Check out songs like "I'm Gonna Booglarize You," "Click Clack," "Clear Spot," "Sure'nuff n Yes I Do", "Big Eyed Beans from Venus" and others from his first three or four albums. NOT the Trout Mask Replica album that so many have declared a masterpiece--it is not.
Without doubt one of the most beautiful, lyrical guitar solos ever, helped along by a haunting metronomic piano. Sheer genius in my book.
As was stated, he was a very good artist. One of my best friends who was also my producer played drums with Captain Beefheart for many tours and Van Vliet painted a portrait of him that still hangs over his mantel.
Never really played this fella in all my 67 yrs, but I've missed something special, thanks for this👌👌👌
The first time i ever heard Captain Beefheart, it was the song "Big Eyed Beans from Venus" . I soon bought the album Trout Mask Replica. Loved it!!!
“This is the day “was our first dance song off London 74. Love capt.

Big eyed beans from Venus, all from the same album. Please only use the studio recordings . You won’t be disappointed.
Abba Zaba.
then get on the smithsonian institute blues
Mister Zoot Horn Rollo, hit that long lunar note, and let it float.
"Her Eye are a Blue Million Miles" is an easy entry point.
I was not expecting what I heard. Sweet guitar, thank you Harri
Thanks, Harri. Love your reactions and your openness to all genres. Peace out.
This is the one and only track of Capt Beefheart that is one of my top 10 all time tracks...just magical

some great tunes there
Add Observatory Crest and Ths is the day

One of the most beautiful songs ever recorded.
That guitar solo is so good .
Wow! This really takes me back to the early 70’s.
Beefheart is an acquired taste. I heard him described as "Howlin' Wolf on Acid". That seems pretty accurate to me.
Oh Harri, so you like the Guitar sound, Hmm! lend an ear to Frank Zappa´s Watermelon in Easter hay, Beefheart and Zappa school friends, and music mates.
Don Van Vliet he had a lot of good stuff out in the late 60’s early 70’s. I believe if memory serves he was a pretty good artist also RIP Captain
After all these years. This is what Captain Beefheart sounds like.
Lovely to see your face enjoying this magical song
One of my all time faves.
This is the Cap'm at his most mellow and dull and conventional. You've no idea what's waiting 'round the corner.

"When I See Mommy I Feel Like A Mummy"
"Black dots were hung in what turns out to be an olive-tree"
/Captain Beefheart
Observatory Crest, and Party of Special Things To Do, from the same album, are great. Observatory Crest is almost normal :)
Captain Beefheart hardly ever left his room, he doesn't have many stories. Hell of a musician though.
I miss the Captain. Good comments...from someone not there someone who sees one is truly good
At the start the chord progression made me think of It's a Man's, Man's Man's World. See also The Residents. In the 70's I got as far as Zappa, but never as far as Beefheart. This is pretty good though.
This is not the Captain Beefheart that I saw with Frank Zappa in the 70s. No way
Same guy. What it’s not is Trout Mask Replica, the album is fairly normal lol.
He wrote on the piano, yet he didn't even know how to play it! He was a painter, too that had many shows at the art gallery.
I'm old & didn't know this.
as I recall he did the 200 motels album collaboration with Frank Zappa so 2 crazy dudes together- voice reminds of Tom Waits
That's because Waits totally ripped him off!
We had to play it to see if they would get it. or not. Girlfriends who hated his art were not around for long
The real tragedy is that this is like listening to nursery rhymes compared to his more esteemed output. At this stage he was very clearly unhappy and being manipulated as an artist (he was a genuine artist and painter later in life). It's a shame...
This song will make you dream ?

Don Van Vilet aka Captain Beef heart
the band,Frank the Band.
Entry level Beefheart MOR pop easy listening, now try "Lick My Decals Off Baby", if you like a challenge, might get a very different reaction !
I have heard of this guy before. Not to bad.
Captain Beefhat?!?!?
What album is this from?
Bluejeans & Moonbeams
MR Zoot Ho
I can’t believe your listening to Captain Beefheart …Jesus ! Now try listening to trout Mask replica .
Too soon for a novice, you got to work up to Trout Mask Replica
@@ceeceerider I’ve been working up to it for 40 years now , 😆
@@cojaysea I know, right?? 😂
Check out his live recording on German TV with Click Clack. This is not classic Beefheart...
I always recommend that song as the best introduction to Beefheart. Check it out, but you can't react to it because it is protected by Copyright, however, there is a version on French TV from the same tour that you can use.
This is one of the worst songs on one of the Captain's worst albums[*].
[*]...say the snobs. I rather like it.
Yeah but no. Go early.
This is NOT a good intro to Captain Beefheart.
