We get lots of calls that require troubleshooting battery issues... we were so glad these weren't the 8D's like we were originally told before getting to the boat. The boat was leaving the next day so we didn't do the charger repair.

After 35 years of boating I’ve upgraded to all AGM batteries. Primary reason was to avoid having to check electrolyte levels in flooded batteries. I never had an issue and was always good about taking care of my batteries. As I get older I seem to need to reduce aggravation and maintenance where I can. Don’t ever see a need to go lithium for my level of usage. This is on a bass boat.

AGM for starting, Lithium for house. Alternator to charge both AGM and Lithium and if lithium BMS shuts off battery Alternator still dumps power into AGM thereby not blowing diodes on alternator. Lithium are just not there yet for cranking batteries. They will get there. When they get there you would swap them out for the weight difference alone. Love your content, from Sydney Australia.

I just hauled off six of those really expensive Odyssey 12 volt 200 ah 1300 cca gel batteries (the skinny tall ones) off a big sailboat, two of them are bulged out bad! In the middle of the night the crew awoke to smoke alarms, had to get the fire dept in. Seems the charger malfunctoned and was putting 27 volts to the 12 volt bank of house batteries. I now have six 132lb batteries to scrap, but I'm waiting for the price to go up, it's at five cents a lb now and I used to get 18. :)

I'm sticking with lead acid. If a captain can't perform a simple preventive maintenance like cleaning battery post and adding water. Then shame on him.. Lead acid has many advantages include low-cost and
globally abundant raw materials, fundamental safety due to its aqueous electrolyte, and a 99%
recycling rate, which minimizes the health and environmental risks. Your video proves that no matter what battery you're using. If you're charging system is faulty your batteries fail. This is why many batteries in the pleasure boat community fail. Because after a day on the water. The boats batteries are not in a constant state of charge/trickle charge. Which then leads to sulfation.
