Thanks David. Quick question: I always put the CTA in the "headline" section, right next to the button. Do you think it works better in the "primary text?" Do you have data showing higher read-through in that text section?
The primary text is much more prominent so I prefer a CTA there. Any time I've tried leaving the CTA out of there the ads don't seem to do nearly as well. You can double down and use a CTA in both places, of course. But it's a trade off against using another piece of social proof or a nice genre-squaring, reader-hooking review quote.
@@DavidGaughran Really good to know. I've been sticking a CTA next to the BUY NOW button assuming that people would be more prone to skipping the primary text because it's not as integrated in the creative part of the ad (especially when it requires someone to click the "read more" portion). But your experience says otherwise, which is super interesting. Thanks for this and all you do, man!
@@louiovino9051 I'd be super curious to hear if anyone has ever done any kind of eye-tracking analysis on Facebook ad elements. My gut says people will get drawn in by the image and then read the primary text next, and either click through right away, or perhaps read the headline text next if they are still waivering, and then finally the CTA button. So I kind of design the ad with that flow in mind - hook, CTA, hook, CTA. But I'd love to actually know!
@@DavidGaughran I work in the biz and am gonna ask our social team this exact question -- I'm positive we've got eye tracking data somewhere -- either in house or third party. I'll be sure to let you know what I find out!

You said this while I was typing but I'm going to say it anyway :-) The cover in the graphic thing was analysed by someone. Just to say that last week (because my AMZ ads had crashed, my fault), I implemented this. And it was worked exactly as stated. To be fair, I already knew I had a very saleable product (completed dragon series) and good graphics, but just creating one ad this has been going insanely well on a £7.50/day budget. In one week, before the readthrough has really begun to build up, I have an ROI of about 200%. As a techie who's done work on machine learning, I understand what's going on at a deeper level, which is gratifying but not required for success.

Thanks for this, David - it was EXACTLY what I was looking for. Enjoy the wonderful advice. I have just released a Vietnam memoir, my first publishing adventure at age 75, and it has been well received in the first few weeks. Now the challenge is to keep the momentum going forward. My problem in setting up the ad campaign, (I am quite the newbie) is it appears to offer me only a few broad categories, ie. US Veterans, US Navy, History, etc. so listening to you, I am assuming if I am patient, (an item I pray for every night "Dear Lord, I need patience and I need it NOW") that the AI from Facebook will sort it out in time. Am I correct in that assumption? Thank you again, my unmet friend.
Great advice as always, David! So I tried FB ads and all was going well for about 5 days. After testing with various authors and ads, I got a CTR of 6.5% for 10 pence a click that resulted in good sales. Then I get a warning for violating the rules (don't know which one???) The account was then suspended. I entered a request for a review. Two days later this was rejected along with a permanent ban!!! No reason given. Anyone else experience this? Annoyed I wasn't even given the reason, and really disappointed as it appeared to be working well. I might try with another account, but after reading the rules I still can't what I did wrong.

Excellent advice again from Dave. Really hones in on the nuts and bolts. Forget the bells and whistles that FB want us to use and get the basics right, and also let FBs AI do the heavy lifting - that's a lot of clichés for one comment - my apologies. Anyway, great vid and solid advice. And test, test, test! Good for newbies and also as a refresher for hardened FB ad users. Cheers!
Thank you so much for this incredible in-depth post! I love your advice and the way you explain everything. I lost a lot of money following bad advice, like use generic images instead of my book covers. I think this tutorial will be a game changer for me. :)
Hey David, great info as always! Quick question: Once you find some winning targeting interests, do you generally run multiple ad sets at once, or do you pour all your budget into one until it starts to dry up, then move on to the next one? Thanks!
Once again you have given us an incredible gift. This was so informative. I have been intimidated wondering how to jump into FB ads. Thanks for 'parting the waters'.
Excellent tutorial. I've been running FB ads for the last few weeks trying to learn more. My question is - how do you truly measure when they are effective? In other words - if you are also advertising on Amazon - how do we know if an order is generated by a FB ad - vs. an Amazon ad? And when you look at the Meta Manager - how do you know whether your ad is truly working? In other words, how do you interpret the data? What are the benchmarks for best performance?
Hi Brad, this is a complicated topic, not least because Facebook can't see which clicks turn into sales, so you get a less full picture than that in your Amazon Ads dashboard. You have to fill in the blanks yourself using what can only be described as crude methods - such as turning your ads on and off and establishing a baseline for your sales/a baseline conversion rate. I'll be discussing this in detail on my newsletter soon, if you are signed up to that. (If not, the link is in the description above.)
THANKS SO MUCH!!!!! this helped me tremendously! I adjusted my ads according to your recommendations and I think it will make a huge difference ! amazing class!!!
Fantastic video. Thank you for making this. It really helped me walk through the process of Facebook ad creation. I've now subscribed to your channel and plan on watching more of your video.
Thanks for this David. I was not able to find the selection area for "Custom Audience" the area where you typed in a famous author's name. For comparable authors. I do not see the edit button you demoed in your video.
So, I've been in the game about as long as you, David, with moderate success, but never could figure out FB ads to save my life. I did a few here and there, mostly for mailing list sign ups with a reader magnet, but I haven't done that in years. I especially didn't know how to set up the A/B testing. I watched your tutorial from beginning to end yesterday and setup up an A/B ad. I had a new trailer someone made for me and was eager to try it out. Maybe it's the trailer, but I also think it's because I've set it up correctly, finally! But, my sales yesterday and today so far, are a bit better than I have with my Amazon ad. To truly see which was working, I turned my Amazon off completely once I saw I was getting a good number of clicks on my FB ad. If you see this in the next few days, do you have a suggestion how long to let an A/B test run when it looks like one of them is outperforming the other? FB says no winner yet, but it sure looks to me like one is clearly outperforming the other. Then do I turn it off or tweak something in it and keep it running? Thanks for sharing your vast knowledge with all of us. I really appreciate it.
David, I am so pleased to have found you. I have been struggling with understanding FB ads, and you gave me my 'lightbulb moment'. Thank you. Question: We can try different ad sets with different target audiences, but how do we know which ad sets work best when Amazon doesn't give demographic or target information from their site? I just can't get past this hurdle. Any thoughts?
I have the latter! Sound is tricky, esp with a long video. I do have a good mic, and some sound proofing, and I remaster the audio as well but it's really tough to get it right over an hour-long affair discussing something complex, tbh. And I'm far from an expert - learning as I go and always trying to improve the sound quality. Quite the learning curve though!
@@DavidGaughran do you have vaulted ceilings? is your mic on cardioid mode? you need a tapestry on that flat wall behind you. The echo is driving me NUTSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS Good video tho
@@Ton369 Sorry about that - I was experimenting with different settings and might have left the gain a little high. It's almost all the way down but I'll try lowering it. I have a decent enough mic (Blue Yeti) with a pop filter and I have a couple of old mattresses against the opposite wall to try and help with the echo, and then I also remaster the sound afterwards - which usually does a great job but I think the automatic remastering process struggled with a long video with different segments and it perhaps isn't sounding as good as it previously did. I'll keep trying to improve the quality and do appreciate the feedback, especially for someone who knows more about this stuff than me (which is basically anyone who knows anything about audio!).
@@DavidGaughran probably not the software. the blue yeti isn't a great mic for this kind of video because its sitting on your desk -- too far from your mouth. This creates an echoey tone. Notice how podcasters like joe rogan are talking into the mic in front of their mouth. If you're on USB, you need a mic like the Fifine K658 or the Shure MV7. And tapestry on the walls.
@@Ton369 I am keen to make the sound as professional as I can - within certain limitations. I don't have Joe Rogan's budget, a sound studio, or expertise on tap. This is my writing desk, adapted to shoot video - so some compromises have to be made. I'm also shooting video rather than recording a podcast, so further compromises have to be made to ensure it is also visually engaging (I don't want to hang anything behind me, and would rather the mic is not visible, for example). That said, improvements can be made - clearly - even within those confines, and I appreciate the feedback. I'm hoping to add more sound-proofing when we renovate his place later this year but there are improvements I can make in the short-term too, for sure, not that I'm back into the swing of things. And I'll check out the mic, thanks.
This made sense for me like nothing else has so far. Thank you, David! One question...you mentioned putting in an end date. I like this, but how far out? A week? A month? End of the month I make the ad in? What is a good beginner practice in order to gauge how the ad is doing (and give it enough time to learn my book's audience)? Thanks again.
Absolutely brilliant video David! Any advice on marketing a book that is a seasonal stocking stuffer. i.e. the buyer is probably not the reader! I want to target parents/grandparents of teens.

That was the most insightful and fantastic in-depth video! Thanks so much, Mr Gaughran.
Great video, very useful, thank you. It would be interesting if you could do something regarding Facebook ads for wide authors. Thanks again.
Thank you so much... I followed your instruction... and lets see how it will work...
Really appreciate your knowledge and openness to help. Watched so many videos about Facebook ads and this one tops them all.🎉🎉🎉
Need foam on the walls and a mic isolation shield
SO MUCH ECHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I have the latter! Sound is tricky, esp with a long video. I do have a good mic, and some sound proofing, and I remaster the audio as well but it's really tough to get it right over an hour-long affair discussing something complex, tbh. And I'm far from an expert - learning as I go and always trying to improve the sound quality. Quite the learning curve though!
@@DavidGaughran do you have vaulted ceilings? is your mic on cardioid mode? you need a tapestry on that flat wall behind you. The echo is driving me NUTSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Good video tho
Wonderful advice as always. Thank you so much, David. The square ad preference is new to me. Will be doing that moving forward.
Thank you so much for this video! God bless you!
This was so helpful! I always appreciate your transparency and sensible advice.
Excellent walk-through. Thank you, David.
So the best way to find this Ad Section is by going to Ads Manager Because there are so many Ad sections on Facebook.
Thank you for the advice 🙏🏼 I can't wait to try it out!
Thanks David, This is brilliant.
your such a star
This made sense for me like nothing else has so far. Thank you, David! One question...you mentioned putting in an end date. I like this, but how far out? A week? A month? End of the month I make the ad in? What is a good beginner practice in order to gauge how the ad is doing (and give it enough time to learn my book's audience)? Thanks again.
This is a great video. Thank you for always being such a great source of advice on this stuff.
This has been a lifesaver! Thanks so much!
Very useful video, David. Thank you so much, you really speak my language when it comes to marketing!
Incredible advice! I'm very thankful for this.
Thanks for this!! Any chance we can get a video on your process of analyzing and optimizing an ad?
Nice, kind man.
Absolutely brilliant video David! Any advice on marketing a book that is a seasonal stocking stuffer. i.e. the buyer is probably not the reader! I want to target parents/grandparents of teens.
Thank you so much for all the work you put into this, extremely informative!
Wow, FB has changed this dramatically since the publishing of this video
