  • In this video, Alvin and I explore the option of making ice off-grid with a Jackery 300 and a Jackery 500. When you have the option of making ice with the power of the sun, it has the potential to save you trips into town/civilization to buy ice. You can continue to enjoy camping off grid longer, while also keeping that loud generator turned off and your food and beverages cold!

Closing the lid does more thank keep stuff out. It also contains the cold so making ice is more efficient

The ice maker uses about 670watts to start the compressor FYI then about 90 watts after that

My DC refrigerator set at 36 degrees runs between 8.5 to 14 watts continuous, or 350 watt hours every 24 hours on the hottest days. A 200 watt solar panel can produce that in 2-3 hours of sunlight. And a 1200 watt hour car battery can run it for 2.5 days without any sun. It's much easier than emptying baskets of ice into a cooler multiple times a day. Not to mention the time you'll spend cleaning an ice maker, and all the water you have to use making the ice. And ice makers use 5 to 10 times as much electricity.

Any ice maker that uses 1.5 amps at 115 volts would use 172 watts. If it used 2 amps at 115 volts it should use only 230 watts, but if you add the 1.5 amps and the 2 amps that are on the tag on the back ( 3.5 amps ) together at 115 volts it would use 402.5 watts. So for your 300 watt jackery to shut off. your ice maker is using more than 300 watts, or more than 2 amps at 115 volts.

I suggest looking at 12v ice makes instead. Given the right set up these 12v ice makers are a more efficient use of your energy.

Can you please advise what specific make and model the ice maker is? I’m trying it with a Euhomy on my 500 and it keeps tripping.

Does there need to be any concerns regarding grounded outlets on the Jackery while using this three prong plug appliance?

As with most things, the answer is it depends on the situation. The Jackery is portable so it does not have a path to the ground which explains the logic to why the ground isn't used. I don't suspect there is a problem with it, but would be best to consult an electrician for your specific use case.

Interesting. I don't have any experience with Rockpal batteries but I do have their solar panel and it seems pretty good.
