This is a video from the Muppet Show where Milton Berle the best comedian the television knew failed to compete with the well known Statler & Waldorf, very funny.
Most of the guests that they heckled HELPED the writers come up with great jokes BEFORE the show. It helped them keep the jokes fast & hilarious. It's obvious when you think about it. The guests could've appeared on ANY "variety" show (which was one of the genres that THIS show was), but they loved to be on THIS show the most because they were fans of it, & because it had lots of viewers. But as fans of the show, they also knew that they could get heckled by the 2 greatest hecklers of all time, so they expected (& usually aided) that. Plus, Statler & Waldorf's heckling was never mean spirited, so there were never any hard feelings.
Statler and Waldorf were inspired by a bit he used to to on his show where a guy named "Sidney Spritzer" would heckle him from a theater box. When I checked it out I was suprised that he borrowed all the jokes here from his show; this is basically a "best of the heckles" from that segment (This bit may have originated in vaudeville, but I have no clue and am just assuming the "heckler in theater box" are from the milton berle show)
Milton sets these jokes up perfectly. What a legendary comedian. He's been around so long that he doesn't need to take the punchline, he's happy just setting it up so the muppets can knock it out of the park.

Me and my old man joined a rail project together, being older he got assigned with a similarly aged canadian guy on a mechanical trolley just dropping out fastenings and they were just like these two, every time they caught up with the machines in front they'd make a hot drink and crack jokes at anyone nearby. examples: -Boss drives by in his car slowly when everyones out working in the rain, as he went past these 2 he says out the window being smart "where else would you rather be?" the canadian guy replied "at your funeral". -Random worker walks up see's my water bottle on the trolley(my initials are written on it "M.T."), asks who's is that can i have some? , my old man replied "MT" (empty) guy goes oh...and walks away without having a drink with these 2 old bastards laughing away. -Worker walks up and puts some flash looking work gloves on the trolley while getting a drink, canadian guy says "those gloves are pretty fancy", guy replies "yeah they're mountain gloves, for mountain men" , canadian: "mount a lotta men do ya?"
I saw Uncle Milty in Vages 1976. He had a heckler in the audience and Milton Berle torn him up. This was actually similar to a recurring routine on the Milton Berle Show. He’d be delivering a monologue and someone in the audience would start heckling him. First time I saw this, I angrily said, “Why doesn’t that guy shut up?” My Dad said quietly, “It’s part of the act.” If we had face-palm back then, he probably would have.

This is the best TV comedy I've seen in years.
My aunt had this episode of the muppets taped on vhs and I remember watching it as a kid and thinking it was by far one of the funniest things I’d ever seen
I watch this every couple of months... it's priceless!
Berle: Now look, you guys are old enough to remember my TV show!
Statler: Yeah, but that wasn't just some jerk not being funny.
Waldorf: No, that was some jerk not being funny in a dress!
Both: Dohohohoho!
Extremely well written. Miss the show
I'll always love how the Muppets handled their guests. Simply involving them deeply in the writing of their scenes and asking them what they'd like to do.
I haven't seen this show in probably 25 years. I remember it vaguely, but i am laughing so hard i have tears running down my face. No comedy has ever made me laugh like The Muppets . Sure do miss it. :-(
This was so good, haven't laughed this hard in a long time. Thank you
OMG...that is the BEST skit! Hecklers -16 .... Milton -0.....do it again, do it again!
The Muppet Show was seriously a true rarity that it was awesome for the kids and hilarious for the adults.
"How come we got this half...." LOLOLOL
My mom used to work for Delta Airlines and she had Mr. Berle on one of her flights once
Mile High Club?
I love how he starts corpsing right at the very end. Just couldn't keep a smile off his face!
Breaking character to laugh. Notable for when actors playing corpses on various shows get the giggles during a scene (hence the name).
That was awesome.
Statler and Waldorf are masters of snark.
The best roast ever!
What a great banter…
Pure genius at work here, human and Muppet!!
I love Milton Berle’s grin at the end, it was absolutely glorious!
Me and my old man joined a rail project together, being older he got assigned with a similarly aged canadian guy on a mechanical trolley just dropping out fastenings and they were just like these two, every time they caught up with the machines in front they'd make a hot drink and crack jokes at anyone nearby.
examples:
-Boss drives by in his car slowly when everyones out working in the rain, as he went past these 2 he says out the window being smart "where else would you rather be?" the canadian guy replied "at your funeral".
🤣🤣🤣
I saw Uncle Milty in Vages 1976. He had a heckler in the audience and Milton Berle torn him up. It got so bad that the heckler was shamed out of the auditorium and the audience gave Mr. Berle a standing ovation. He didn't miss a beat, continued his stix. Saw him Debbie Renolds. She was old as grandmother but awesomely 👌 HOT 🔥.
I grew up watching this live, well first aired, and I forgot how funny this was. Man, my ribs hurt.
I love these guys. I'd watch the whole way through, just for that last laugh at the end.
I'm so glad I found this. This is the most hilarious thing I've seen in years!
I've watched this video dozens of times. It never gets old.
The look on Milton's face at the end says "Oh, this was fun, I had a blast" :D
OH Man, I was crying laughing! I need old school comedy to try and laugh in this far too serious world. Thank You Muppets!
The two greatest hecklers of all time.
This is the funniest thing I've seen in a long time
If I remember correctly, Milton wrote the skit. Including all of S&W's lines. Great Stuff!
A bravura perfomance! 🤣
The best Stadtler and Waldorf material I've seen!
Have to bring your "A" game with Uncle Miltie on stage!😊❤
