This game has the best social experience of any MMO I've ever played. The fact that it forces you at higher levels to find other players to cooperate with breeds friendships that lasts for years. Also the intense rivalries you can form with other players in the pvp room. Ragnarok pvp is one of the funnest things to do in any game.

I don't know how it fared in the US and other Western countries, but RO was HUGE in the Philippines. It was a phenomenon that rivaled Counter-Strike in public computer shops and attracted mainstream media attention.

The same here in Malaysia. You would see Cyber Cafes fully decorated with RO stuff (banners, wallpapers, posters etc) and EVERYONE you know, was playing. Sadly game turned extremely sour after the massive amounts of BOTS that flooded the game. God I miss those days where I'd go to Payon ask if anyone wants to party up and venture into Payon Dungeon.

Ragnarok's Freedom where everything is just a side quest is beautiful. It makes you feel that it's your own adventure and not pre-determined fate. As of now. there's no MMORPG able to emmulate that feeling.

This. I love how RO was like "Here's the world, have fun!" You were free to do anything and go almost anywhere at any time. The lore is immense and carefully thoughout, from lighthearted to incredibly dark content, if you wish to explore it but it doesn't shove it down your throat with tales of "the chosen one". I haven't found the same feeling with any mmo ever again

So much nostalgia packed in this video! Thank you! I've met amazing and interesting people from all walks of life from across the world many who were significantly older that I looked up to when I was a kid while playing this game (10-20 years ago) such as; US soldiers who binged on this game between training and deployments, newly wed couples, LGBT groups, a Dutch hardware store worker, a Chinese-American humanities grad student, a car magazine model, etc. The community in RO basically raised me to be the open minded person I am and as an adult looking back, I'm grateful that there was a place where a dorky weird kid with good intentions who have little in common to those around him in the real world can still connect with people even if its within a fantasy world.

I played iRO for about 6 years from the late 2000's to about 2011-12, starting when I was in high school. I met a lot of my best friends there. I quit when they merged Ymir and the other pay to play servers into Valkyrie, the free one. Because they did nothing to address the botted zenny problem rampant in Valk before that, zenny became worthless and it completely destroyed the market in the process (and my project of buying a Meg with it).
A few weeks ago I was feeling that pang of nostalgia and decided to check in on my first MMO, and was shocked to see it was not only still alive, but still relatively active. Unfortunately it's been bastardized beyond all redemption by the cash shop and pay to win account services, even more so than it was when I left over a decade ago. The first thing I noticed is the Novice Grounds are gone and they drop you in Izlude instead, and everything revolves around this quest journal thing now. I didn't stay long, it's just too different now.

The fact that RO is mindlessly grindy is the actual reason I love and continue to love it - I hate MMOs today that are so story driven, having no restrictions allows you to create your own path and story with your friends.

RO was also my first MMORPG ever. Started in highschool... played for maybe 4 years until I get bored. I remember having actual IRL school friends to play with, and my 2 brothers also play. It was fun! Of course we experiment with both the national server (idRO) and private server, even hosting our own private server for a couple of months. I remember going to internet cafe to buy the subscription card, and also tried buying zeny with real money a few times (damn that was expensive). i remember getting hacked and losing my items. I remember the drama with guild and deciding to quit the guild. So many instances where people just kill steal my items :( I remember exploring map to find pretty places to get a screenshot. Also remember having an official printed guide (with item database, skill database), planning your build on an online calculator, and having a poster of the world map in my room to use as reference when travelling. Selling warps as a priest. Changing into my merchant toon to vend instead of logging out at night to sleep. Having to register as female just so I can play as female toon... I logged in and wait during christmas and new year's eve in prontera just to wish the map seasons greetings. So many memories!!

Your post is amazing and so relatable.
      - I remember going to Glastheim way earlier than I should. Grouping together near the entrance with other noobs, sort of a strength in numbers strategy. Casting my Storm Gust that took 10 years to cast.
      - I remember my first character and he was completely useless, stats all over the place. I didn't know the difference between a tank and a DPS Knight, so he became a mish-mash, too frail to be a tank and too weak to be a DPS.
      - My Hunter was the first one that had a correct build. It was the first time I killed somebody in PVP.
      - I remember advertising for party members, looking for a tank and a priest. That was the most exciting part for me even though I'm just sitting down in the town square. I think it's because of the anticipation and the companionship.

The music of ragnarok is unironically fantastic, and some of the best music I've heard from any mmo. Most of them choose to be silent for the majority of gameplay anyway.
What I do have to say though... is that the official server is horrible. The exp you get from monsters is terribly unbalanced, to the point that you are almost entirely dependent on clearing the tedious missions on the board. Which eventually run out and you are left with no other option than the most mindless grinding. Each hour being just a few percent points which can be lost instantaneously if you die.
The server is designed to bore you to death until you decide to pay.
It is quite sad... since the official server is the most populated and the best maintained but gives you maybe the worst experience I've had playing RO.

Loved playing this game when I was a teenager. Looking back, with the benefit of hindsight, it wasn't really the best MMORPG around, but somehow it brought a lot of people together like no other game did. The lack of readily available information forced people to group up to level up and figure out things, and everyone was very friendly and sociable. I am still friends with some of the folks I met on RO, 15 years later, which is amazing, to say the least.
I've always cherished my RO memories, but when I tried getting back into RO last year, I realized I've spent the last decade looking at it with rosy retrospection. I didn't really enjoy the grinding aspects of the game, or how bots soon took over and ruined everything, but it was definitely a lot easier to make friends in-game than in today's games. Everything has been dumbed down and soloing the entire game is now doable, which forces interaction to a minimum.

    • @n0madd
      @n0madd 2 роки тому

I don't think it's rosy retrospection. RO will always have a place in my heart and a spot as my favorite game of all time. I think RO today (in most servers although there are some really good ones) is different than it was back in the day. This game was brutal and really fun. You pretty much logged in and the instructions were "do whatever you feel like, lol", endgame was what you wanted it to be: be a pvp god, be a woe master in a top guild, hunt mvps, clear "dungeons", be the richest merchant in the server (I remember some people did a merchant conglomerate lol), discover lore, making it to 99/70, etc. Information was meant to be found out by players as they discovered the world they were taking part in and this brought people together, nothing was handed to you or blocked from you (you could as a novice 1/1, explore almost the entire world and even choose to face an mvp and get absolutely messed up).
Nowadays the MMO market follows the same model that just holds your hand, through a series of senseless chores that you can pretty much do by yourself to get to endgame material. And RO has changed in this direction. You can solo pretty much any content, one-shot MVPs that would have made you shit your pants in the past, a lot of servers let you use multiple accounts at the same time, etc. The entire experience feels as you said dumbed down and forced if you follow the meta.
In any case, the game is still fun as hell provided you find the correct server for what you want :)

I did my time grinding a Wizard to High Wizard, even though I never got that High Wizard to lv99 lol, I think highest I got was lv95 or 96. Still it was years of fun, despite the grind. I loved War of Emperium. I only regret that I could never get into killing boss monsters. I didn't have the patience to grind up a Guillotine monk or the gear for an MVP sniper.

It'd stop moving and I'd use console commands to tell 'em "I'm not a bot damnit. I'm just efficient and don't like talking." That usually shut them up or we talked for a bit, them in game, me using a botting program to talk to them in game. You could use the damn thing to change your characters gender somehow, I even showed my friends when I changed mine.

Long time RO player. Loved the video, although I don't agree with your 5:07 complains, that's how they managed to make jobs, builds, and skills so unique back in the day. Character controls are not unresponsive at all, you are talking about "after-attack delay" and "hit-lock", an Alchemist won't attack-and-move as fast as a Hunter or a Rogue, a bow has a long recoil so it takes long to attack again, but a dagger allows you to hit and run quickly, also the AGI stat reduces the after-attack delay, which allows you to use skills and move after each attack, you can actually cast a skill after every attack if you time it well enough. Along with that, "hit-lock" is what prevents you from moving when you get hit, something like the "opportunity attack" from Dungeons and Dragons, you can prevent this by using Endure or having high Flee, Perfect Dodge, or even high movement speed. So get gud m8 no hate.
But I agree, the game really is grindy as hell, and the windows are annoyingly small, playing on 1x does have a charm but most people just play on 50x or higher servers.

I remember "pranking" on the entrance to Payon dungeon with my stalker one. I would click chase walk near portal then walk a bit further across the portal and then click again that skill. Sitting there then open pub... hahaha... many novices that awe how I get there... :D

Non existing story???... I mean... come on man the main story quest were pretty dope. Yeah they are mostly text dialogs and descriptions with some visual effects here and there but that was part of the fun, you had to use your imagination too. Its pretty much like a visual novel format and i like those so i guess my opinion is a little bias but most of my favorite memories of the game where doing quest and learning the mysteries of the world, doing Rachel santuary quest or the cursed princes or the one to enter where the belzebub is. It was like reading a book while you play and i never had such experience in any other game. Oh and de BGM... best game music ever period

I dont even know how this got into my recommendations but DAMN, I am not alone!
I've been playing RO on and off for years now, because I just cant let go.
I started playing RO when I was 7 years old and took a break at the age of 14 because my home-server at the time went down.
Literally trying to convince everyone I know to play RO with me, but its rather unsuccessful, mostly based on the graphics being "outdated" in their opinion.
Glad to know that I ain't the only one taking a trip down memory lane every now and again.

  • @GoatyOfTheGOATs93

bRO (Brasilian Ragnarok Online) is still pretty much the MOST populated server up to date, it has exclusive mechanics that other servers don't have like, the bigger your party is the more EXP you get to counterbalance the EXP division so a lot of famous grinding spots are full of players looking and inviting for parties
Tho' I really don't like how the F2P integration turned the game into a P2W model and how easy it is to make bots, the bots destroyed the economy pretty bad so new players that don't cheat or don't want to actually spend money will have a pretty rough time playing it..

Putting nostagia aside, I think the only thing that made RO popular was it aggrasive free to play marketing and bringing the online multiplayer experience to the masses. The gameplay was stupidly clunky and grindy as you said. Poeple stayed for the social interaction. Playing with your middleschool friend from home at night was the shit back then. WoW was a waaaaaaay better game but here in SEA only people live in cities with broadband and deep pockets could afford iplay it.
