Excellent information, thank you for sharing. I was not aware of HS Code and ISPM 👍🏽✌🏽
I really appreciate your comment about Import duties and the HS Code. I've bought inexpensive art from the US but I've never heard of this?
Glad it was helpful! Customs rules are always changing between borders but the HS system seems to work well
Thank you so much for your extremely helpful videos! I really appreciate all of your tips and your time and effort you have put into making these videos. 😊😊
You are so welcome!
Thank you very much - good to know. Very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Kitty cat was helping you down the stairs. My cat helps me too. He's my assistant... and harsh critic.

Thank you for the insights
Yung Astronaut you’re most welcome!!!
Enjoyed watching!!!
Thanks very much!
Thank you 🙏
You’re welcome 😊
Thanks Ed! I've never seen a painting shipped liked that where it was suspended in the box. Very cool. All the best!
Coty Schwabe thank you so much!!!
Very helpful, thank you!
You're welcome!
Some really good info there, thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Really great information, thank you for sharing! My husband is a painter and has some issues with his crate coming back ripped or damaged by FedEx. It's been frustrating! Thanks again for the tips!!
That Art Teacher glad the information has helped! Thanks for the feedback
Nice tip! Tnx I prepared my RogerFederer painting’s back with tape and looks great!
Fantastic!
So informative! Thanks for making this.
My pleasure!
Thanks so much for this - terrific info - especially about the ISPM 15 timber and floating in the case.
You're welcome Robert - my pelasure!
Great vid! Thanks :)
Glad you liked it!
Do you make the crate or the freight company? So adorbs fangirling over Hirst!!! 😂😊👍🏻 Thats so amazing you’re so near his studio!!!
My freight company makes them most of the time. For most international deliveries of single paintings though I pack them myself. I have a video on that too!
Ahahaha Swarez SO cool. Enjoyed watching it.
Thank you so much!
Love your work and all your videos and your accent mate 😉
Jennisart haha! Thank you, most kind of you to say so!!
Hi Ed, very useful details on the export/shipping requirements, Cheers
Tony Welch thanks Tony, much appreciated
Great video, but the extra long suspension timber won’t brace the painting from “knocks” along its course in travel. In fact, they sag and move considerably. High density foam sheeting is rather standard for a snug fit and zero movement. Quite surprised by this. Thanks again for the other great info. Fine chap. Thank you.
Thanks Stephen - I have never had a single issue with long suspension timbers and have never had any significant movement from them even when densely packed and smacked with a hammer for testing. But will always note an alternative just in case so thanks for that!
Awesome video. You've got a new subscriber. I recently put out my paintings on Saatchi Art (recently left a 9 to 5 job) and will ship in a tube if sold, as there's no way our wood is certified in Nigeria and the only reliable way of sending a huge crate of this nature will be by the expensive courier companies. Receiving a painting in a tube will definitely put off a few buyers but from my present location, it does make sense to ship in a tube. I was glad to learn that serious art collectors won't mind the additional cost however, and was also glad to know the paperwork that makes your work stand out and travel stress-free.
Thanks Linda - I am delighted you found the video useful! Thanks for subscribing!
Thank you
You're welcome
I'm in Ross, so thanks for the recommendation. Not far from Jacksons, great.
Thanks for this insightful video. But all I'm thinking now is ''what will I get myself into''. haha
You and me both!
Ironically, the reason stretched canvases were invented, for easy shipping. Meaning, to remove the canvas, roll it up and dismantle the stretchers, and rebuild when it reached its destination. It was actually inspired by the (then) ships with sails.
I never knew that Todd! Thanks for the info - I consider myself educated! Much appreciated :)
Swarez Art btw, cool stuff on your end. Nice studio space to boot!
Thank you for taking the time to create this video which has been exceptionally helpful and saved me a great deal of time having to check whether the information from various websites is accurate. Thanks again Ed!
Glad it helped! and you are welcome!
What sort of costs did you incur for the crate and export costs? Would be very helpful to know what to build into the price of the art work. Great information!
Thank you! I normally have to subsidse costs for single pieces because it can work out to be around 40% of the ticket price depending on location and size! ouch... Though every case is different i would always set aside a minimum of 15% of the ticket price as costs for international shipping. Whether you charge on top or build that in is a tricky one but ultimately will be a conversation for you and the client to have. That's what i normally do and most are always pretty reasonable.
i live in the States (PA to be exact) and its always so strange to me to see y'all driving on the opposite side of the road and your vehicles. lol.
..very helpful video though!
Haha! Glad it helped!
Too funny. The letter box.
Really useful! I'm actually nearby in Tewkesbury so will def remember this company. Thanks!
Lynn Ede thank you I’m glad it’s been useful to you.
How much does it cost to ship this huge crate? Tell please the painting price. Do you include shipping costs into painting price? And what company did you ship? Thank you! Nice video 😊👍
Hi Igor. Impossible to tell you how much the crate costs to ship as you haven't told me where it's going!! 😊 Rates and costs vary on a whole range of different things. This one, at the time of the video, sent to Michigan in the US was around £1600 GBP. That's on a £5k painting. I don't include shipping in the price for overseas customers but everyone is different so I like to have that conversation with each client to asses their needs before agreeing a price to ship. I used a local company to me to deal with everything (I think their link is in the description?). Hope that helps and glad you liked the video
Great video! I just posted a painting to Canada and its being held in customs until someone pays a 15% fee! I don't understand because I understood that art is duty free.😢
Import Duty is different from Sales Tax and customs charges. Every country is different for that and should be checked prior to sending. Normally I notify my clients that they may be liable for local tax rates.

Good to hear
I'm curious about the general $ figure of this shipping. Everything from the bubble-wrap and tape, to the legal documents, to the shipping crate service, and the final transport and arrival. Apart from the artwork itself, what did ALL THAT cost (more or less) ?
I can't remember actually because I can't remember where this was going. but a crate is around £300, packing and paperwork £50, air freight probably £1500-2000, insurance £150 - that kind of thing.
I think it's a relevant question. It helps create information between levels of artist. Between the handing off of 20inch painting locally at someone's door, and the 'cost is no object' shipping of a half-million $ 10foot piece to Australia. How we bridge that gap if one is still in the phase of 'that's another $5 roll of tape gone'. Not all of us work in the 'Damian Hirst' neighbourhood ;)
of course it's a relevant question and thank you for asking. I hope that the recollection of approximate costs helps a little. Like anyone, I have to keep costs sensible and often I actually subsidize international freight charges because of how ridiculous they are. Often it can be a problem facing a charge of £1500 for a £3000 painting! Who wants that? No-one. So I do try to soften the blow to potential clients by soaking up some of those costs wherever I can. If you want the accurate costs for this exact job I am happy to go and find it for you to give you an accurate figure.
Great way to pack a large painting. Thanks for the video. It made me wonder about the timber used in the stretcher bars. I presume customs could get pedantic if they're not certified? I'm not aware of any similar kitemarks on the canvases I use but maybe customs only look at the packaging. Looks like you've found yourself a great freight company, worth their weight in gold. Kind regards, Michael Hemming Scape Artist
Great video and super informative. My biggest question though would be, how do you factor in shipping costs when you sell your artwork. I'm assuming because your clientel is more on the high spectrum they aren't super concerned but when you first started how did you go about figuring that into the cost?
Good question! Actually, everyone is worried about shipping costs - I have never met a client yet who doesn't cringe when they realize how much it can be. The truth is that I don't factor in shipping - it's always an extra cost. But I work with each client individually to find the best solution for them and for the painting. Sometimes that can mean rolling them but others may mean a carte. I think if you are honest in your approach then most people are reasonable. I tend to subsidize costs where I can as a gesture of goodwill. Yes, it eats into the profit but that is sometimes necessary.
I have always operated in the same way - right from the start. It is always extra unless it's a domestic delivery in which case that is always free. Hope that helps.
@@SwarezArt it helps a ton, I really do appreciate the advice and the fact that you are so quick to respond and honest with your responses. Much respect for you and what you do sir. Thank you
Great video. What was that music around 2:20?
Thanks! The music is a royalty free track that you can get from UA-cam's own library I think... Just not sure what it's called!
Can you recommend a fine art courier? I need to ship a 1.2x1.4 meter painting on birch panel.
Edit. I just got the link from the comments page.
No worries!
I am packer and creating.
Hard envelope.I am back up for time late
Sounds great!
Hi Swarez. I'm based in Lebanon and facing challenges due to the financial crisis here, which has impacted services like Etsy and PayPal no longer being available. I'm interested in selling artwork overseas, ranging from simple paper prints to large canvases and clay sculptures, all packaged securely.Could you please advise on how to navigate international shipping and receiving payments? Specifically:What are the best methods for shipping artwork internationally from Lebanon, ensuring it arrives safely and with monitoring options? With PayPal and other common platforms unavailable here, how can I securely receive payments from international customers? Are there alternative payment methods or services you recommend? Are there any legal considerations or potential extra fees from shipping companies that I should be aware of, especially regarding different shipment methods?Thank you for any insights or advice you can provide on these topics!
Which companies would you recommend to ship the work?
Depends on the client, country, type of service, price etc.. they're all as good and bad as each other.
Any ideas of renting or buying studio space
That's too broad a question to have any meaningful answer - can you specify and I will try to help
wow Thank you for your video!! awesome
Sher's Artwork you are most welcome!!
How much the fright company charged you for this service?
Freight charges depend on so many things. Size, weight and destination to name just three. Contextually that question is a little difficult to answer because this particular painting was destined for California and, although it's been a ling time since I sent it (and therefore can't remember) it would only be relevant if you were sending one of this size to the US from the UK! So kind of specific really.
If you are looking for information on shipping costs from all locations to all other locations and you know the weight and size of what you have then head over to Google and find a comparison site for shipping large parcels. There are a lot of them out there and they will return rates from all major carriers for you to asses which one is best for your particular needs at that time. That's all I do. Sorry I can't remember how much this cost to send!
Thank you so much for your brief reply. I have to send a resin artwork big size from Canada to UK. For custom needs do I have to contact Canadian govt websites for it?
Everything was so informative.
Could you let people know what the total cost of shipping you spent in the USA?
Always difficult but that crate in the video was around £2000 GBP.
@@SwarezArt
Thanks, Swarez.
Great work!
@@SwarezArt Really? 2000 British Pound for a crate just to send an artwork?
I did it myself thanks to Stodoys plans.
Good for you!
Very interesting video, thank you. I'm interested to know what happens to the wood once it's been delivered. Is it re used? Im getting a painting ready to send overseas, (nowhere near as big as this) and there doesn't seem to be an eco friendly way of doing it
Sadly the wood doesn't get returned - it's up to the client to break it up. I do always ask for them to consider the sustainability issues and most of them are pretty good in thinking about the impact of the timber and how best to use and re-purpose it.
@@SwarezArt Thanks for the reply!. It's so hard trying to keep everything sustainable in this art world.
@@2econdclasscitizen I know exactly what you mean!
Wooow I like it IAM from Uganda Africa IAM good in art I nead amarket for my art work please 🙏
Well follow some of the videos I have done an start there. You'll be surprised how far you can reach!
I just painted with goldleaf,, usually i roll my paintings for shipping. But im a bit afraid with this goldleaf, do you have any opinions on packing gilded paintings?
I've never used goldleaf unfortunately so i would have to advice you find an answer to that elsewhere - I would not like to advise on something I am unfamiliar with.
Never carry Artwork by you self special going down the stairs.
can you do a video of how to send art ‘underseas’ ?
may need a diving suit first...?
How much does it cost to make a wooden box like this and how much do you sell it for?
I don't see the boxes on - there is simply a cost to me which I have to factor in when selling art that needs a crate. This one was around $450.
How big does the painting have to be before considering framing it like that? I have a 1,85x90cm painting and I am just starting out on a low budget. Any suggestion for that? Thanks!
Try looking online for a comparison site for shipping quotes. I only use crates where multiple paintings are involved or it's too large to be carried through a regular network. At the size you mention you should be able to use one of the global carriers normal services. (TNT, FedEX etc))
Move...that was too much work getting out the door.
Haha! In time I hope!
What is the name of clear side u used .
Can you explain more please?
Wow! Who pays for all that?😮
Normally I share the cost with the client. If we meet each other half way that's usually a fair compromise
It s very hard to deliver art because of customs. My pack is in customs inspection because it contains paintings and my recipient needs to obtain a license and he is going to obtain in.....I m afraid that they will open my pack , my gift for recipient and the gift will be damaged ...... this descurage me a lot, I just hope my recipient to obtain my delivery my gift....but this customs 's procedure descurage me to send paintings anymore.......
It’s very important for you to be aware of local import restrictions for the country you’re sending too. Some require a Power of Attorney form to be completed so that you can hand the responsibility to a third party. If you prepare things before you send there should never be any nasty surprises.
how much is the shipping fee for that huge painting? probly a fortune
Impossible to say unless you specify a destination!!! Copenhagen is a lot different to Canberra!! But in any case, crate shipping is always expensive...
@@SwarezArt No im referring to this painting in the video, how much shipping did it cost you?
fekkin 'ell, that's a butt-tonne of work. real pro though, can't imagine how much the shipping costs. can you give me an average price in case you ever read this please? (i'm an artist, not a client. i need to send a piece so i'm wondering how to go about it)
Difficult to make that relevant as I don't know were you are or what size of crate you are sending but on average, a UK to US delivery in a crate like the one in the video is around £1600 GBP. Hope that helps..
That probably costed a fortune!
Indeed it did!
So useful, thank you!
You're welcome!
