- Lagomorphs: Rabbits and Hares in Contemporary Craft opens Jun 3, 2023 and runs thru January 28, 2024 at the Fuller Craft Museum (fullercraft.org/) in Brockton, MA
This is the process of crating a sculpture of mine for a cross country trek to the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, Massachusetts. Having worked in museums for nearly a decade before starting this channel, crate building was one of my favorite parts of that job. Every piece of art is unique, so crate building involves a TON of problem solving.
I hope you enjoy this glimpse into my old career, and I look forward to sharing the process of making a sculpture like the rabbit in the not too distant future.

As a design engineer it’s very impressive how well thought out this crate is. If the sculpture wasn’t absolutely incredible, I’d be happy with just watching how you approach making a crate for each piece.
It feels like ot could fall from pretty high and still protect the sculpture
Came down to the comments to say this, 100% agree.
@@zchats came down to to the comments to say the same same thing!
That piece is incredible. The level of ingenuity and artistry of people never ceases to amaze me.
and the rabbit is nice too
Yeah it's an awesome crate
The fact that you can make a crate seem like a work of art deserving of the job it’s been given is incredible!
Really appreciate that you made this video. It is fascinating to hear your thought process and how thoughtful you are at each step. Shipping art is an art in itself - really compliments such a beautiful piece. Thanks again.
And definitely would love to see the process to create the artwork!
I couldn't have said it better. Just beautiful artwork.
yup, there’s a reason why Art Handler is an entire job in itself within museums!
Michael, if you see this - do you include a photo of how the initial completed installation is set up? as a reference if someone else needs to re-pack your items
and the extra care because its his own art piece :')
Having worked in a major art gallery for 20 years I can appreciate the work you put into this crate. Excellent work. 😎 👍
Me too, ~15 years in museum, including a complete inventory of artworks and relocation of storage. I've seen them of all kinds, all sizes, all weights...
This crate is very well designed, but it is not suitable for all types of transport (air freight, international...).
@@ledganache out of interest, what should he have done to make it capable of surviving air freight and international travel?
@@sadface In *his* case, I can't say. It's his own artwork, it's up to him.
In the general case, depending on the artwork, materials, value/insurance policy, it may require more sophisticated features. Climatic crate, wood treatment (according to the standards of the destination country)...
I have already seen crates arrive packed in another crate to overcome this kind of concern.
@@ledganache I never thought about the wood treatment, countries like Australia would have a fit lmao
Dude, as a Damage Clerk for a major shipping company, I absolutely love all the time and effort you put into making sure the product is AMAZINGLY well protected, but that the packaging is completely clear how it's re-assembled, AND just how sturdy the packaging appears to be!
I just had a (supposed) fine art piece in my building last week, an obsidian glass skateboard. Packed in soft packing foam, but the wood split where a screw was put in, so all the alignment went off, the lid came open, and... well, I think you can guess the condition of the skateboard.
The shipping box is so well made I would have to reuse it. The rabbit is exquisite.
Yes to seeing the art process!
Rabbit is incredible! Well done. Would love to see you make some art.
Have a great day everyone :)
Would love to see a long form video of how these are made! Super cool.
That was a legit masterclass. Incratable.
Best rabbit hutch ever! That bunny travels in style... I'd love to see the process of wet-bending.
The crate itself is beautifully made! ❤
If you made more crate building videos i’d definitely watch them.
That is a beautiful piece of art! Yes!!! Would love to see how it was made. Thanking you in advance 😊
Not only is the rabbit sculpture an incredible piece of art but the crate is practically a piece of art in and of itself. I thoroughly enjoyed watching you figure out how to secure this rabbit for shipping. When I started watching, I almost lost my mind when I saw the rabbit (I’m a huge fan of rabbits.). Then you said it was going to be in an exhibit in Massachusetts, and I almost fell out of my chair. I live in NH, so I might actually be able to see it in person. Please do a video chronicling how you make these sculptures! I would absolutely love to see that. As always, your work is impeccable, Michael. Thanks for sharing it with us.
At the end. Actually Michael, you have *THREE* pieces at the museum on display. That crate is worthy of display! Holy hell, the rabbit looks awesome and so does the crate!
Your crate game is absolutely next-level. I would never have thought that this much thought, planning, and excellent execution was required for crate-making. Excellent job, as always!
edit: I would 100% ABSOLUTELY want to see how you make these sculptures. They are incredible.
Some art to ship the art in.
Interesting project. Yes more art! 💚👽
I love your process of building the crate. Having worked in a museum, peripherally, I always wondered how they managed to ship pieces in a collection without them getting damaged. Very cool! Yes, I would love to watch you sculpt, even if you are only showing the techniques without the added pressure of filming the entire process through completion. That way you could share some aspects, but still be free to create without the camera on every action. ;) I can't imagine how hard that would be...
Not only do I discover a hidden talent of a creator that I love, but in addition the final product dazzles me with its ingenuity, its industrial beauty, its empathy towards the end users!
This is the best application of custom woodworking I've seen so far. No one should care about yet another coffee table that can and should be mass produced. Custom job for safely keeping and transporting one of a kind fragile artwork is something any customer in such need would be immensely happy to pay for.
That’s an insanely gorgeous piece. I would love to see how it’s made!
This was fascinating! The rabbit was cool, too. 😉
Yes, we definitely want to see you making your art, too ✨
Would love to see your process of making sculptures!
As a product designer, I love all your thoughts and designs on this box! it really communicate well!
Your sculptures are the reason why I started watching you. I miss watching you doing your art pieces
that hare is stunning, I recently sent some of my art to Taiwan to a collector, and the process of building a crate took nearly a week to get right, the message from taiwan was that the crate survived shipping and its been put in storage so the art can be used in future moves. I think more love went into the crate than the actual art.
Even your crate is a masterpiece love your attention to detail and precision a true craftsman
Wow, impressive! Love the end user focus you have in your crate, especially the part with written instructions on the actual pieces and the painted corner. Makes the UX designer in me very satisfied 😊
Absolutely incredible piece! I grew up in South Dakota and have seen a ton of jack rabbits in the wild and this piece made me smile. Also... dude... that crate is crazy cool. The cynic in me still thinks there is a possibility someone will put it together incorrectly at least once. Your videos help me appreciate the fact others exist who are all about details. Thanks for sharing and best of luck with the show!
Superb sculpture… crate even more impressive?😂. You are a virtuoso. Thank you for posting!!!
Best shipping crate I have ever seen! Oh the rabbit looks good as well ;) Love the videos man keep up the awesome work!
I would love to see the process of you making the sculpture. In the past those videos have been some of the best
That is the most beautiful sculpture. Wow.
Also, somehow the care and thought that went into the crate is just as satisfying and impressive. You rock, Michael.
Agreed, there's a days work in making the crate
Wonderful piece of art. We love the rabbit and your style. PS I especially appreciate your crate. Scott and Debi
I'd never have suspected crate making would involve so many smart design tricks ! Thank you 👍
Can't wait to see some videos of the process for your sculptural work! Amazing stuff.
As a painter I love seeing other and frankly more unique forms of fine art and even the packaging because that's hella interesting
The rabbit is a fantastic piece of art but thhe crate is a piece of art in its own right. I really enjoyed the uniqueness of this video.
This is my favorite UA-cam subscription! Thanks for the pointers on crates. I'd love to see a sculpture of the fox chasing your rabbit!
The rabbit is a darn masterpiece, and so is the crate you made for it! Amazing!
I think those sculptures are what drew me to your channel in the first place. 👍👍👍
That rabbit is so stunning! I think the shipping crate should be displayed with it! I would LOVE to see you make more art!!!
So cool to watch you make a crate! Yes, please make videos of your art making.
Not only the Rabbit is art, but also the box! Nice work 🤘
I worked in the shipping industry for years, and this is about the best packing job I've seen.
I enjoy anything you produce. The rabbit is amazing. As with all your work, its a realization of your vision. Great job. Even the crate is a work of art and taught me so much, as I have items that need that much care and we move a lot.
I would absolutely love to see how you make the running rabbit sculpture….that is something I would love to have in my home.
Michael, I am amazed at the planning & construction of this rabbit sculpture!
Without words, you communicate that you are kind, considerate artist!
The washers for the screws to help those who receive the sculpture,
the non verbal hint of making the handles to reinforce how to orient the crate during shipping,
the spray painted triangle to help the recipients reassemble the box,
the way you label the contents of the crate,
not to mention the well placed foam supports inside the crate for the rabbit sculpture…
Wow 😮❤😊
Your channel inspires many makers like me.
Thank you!
Hello Michael , what a beautiful art piece that rabbit. The box you build is awesome, you don't have to be afraid there's going to be any damage during shipping. You are a real artist , love your projects and videos. Wish you al the best. Greetings from belgium 🇧🇪
I thought that I remembered some animal projects from years ago, but don't see them in your videos anymore. The wolf silhouettes were one I distinctly remember, but seems like there were more. - Chris
You truly are a master at your craft(s) and everything that goes with it! What. A. Crate.
Yes please!!! I would absolutely love to see how you make your sculptures! Hell, I enjoyed watching you make a crate for your sculpture, I’m sure I’ll enjoy watching you make an actual sculpture!😁👍
That crate was a work of art itself. Amazing thought, and logic, put into each step. And damn right we want to see how you make a sculpture like that.
I love that rabbit. The piece shows a great understanding of the rabbit's physiology in motion along side the ungodly skill with your chosen medium this channel has already given me an appreciation for. I'd never have expected to enjoy a video of the crating up of an artwork, but you've shown me wrong on that score as well. Those aside I'll look forward to one day watching a vid of you creating another such sculpture.
From working in manufacturing I can without a doubt say your crates are beautiful and much appreciated. You wouldn't believe how often things come and go from warehouses looking trashy.
Wow, not only a beautiful piece of sculpture but also a master class in crating artwork, so good.
Wow. The crate is piece of art too. Wow. Speechless.
NICE! Thanks for sharing this Michael. It appears that the shippers were impressed as well.
I've worked in galleries and museums and that's about the best crate I've seen. I love the spray painted corner for registration; I've done similar things to keep non-interchangeable parts with their correct matches, too.
I'd love to see a mountain lion done with this style; I think the curves and lines would lend themselves very well to the medium, as well as the wood tones being able to match that cat's natural coloring.
So cool. I'm from Brockton and have been to the Fuller Museum many times. Love the Rabbit sculpture!
Spray painting the rabbit on the outside is genius!
I remember some animal pieces/wings on one of your early early vids. I’ve been hoping for more since then, it’s so astonishing. Everything you do from art to shop furniture is so well thought out and intentional. Fav Chanel for sure.
I’d love to see a wolf sculpture.
I'm in Mass and would love to see this in person. It looks beautiful.
Please make more rabbits! That is amazing! Love it.
I love that rabbit - it is unbelievably beautiful 😍
Amazing, Michael! The rabbit is a beautiful piece of art and the crate is so well made. Would love to see your building process of a sculpture and I would love to see you making a Galgo Español! These Spanish sighthounds suffer a hard fate. Used for hare hunting, abandoned or killed when the hunter has no longer usage of a dog. More than 50.000 every season. So watching you building a sculpture of a Galgo could help raising awareness of the plight of the Spanish hunting dogs.
21:58 That guy is already testing the crate... 🙃 Awesome crate built, and the rabbit is incredible! As a tech guy, I was thinking about adding in G-force bump sensors to measure all the bump force during the shipment. Maybe it's best not to know how the shipment was handled 😉
I would love to see a video on how something like that is made!
The creation of the box is as much art as it is function. Loved it. Would love to see an art piece of a Phoenix with 2-3 long curly tail feathers.
Great piece of art! I've never seen anything like that!
Incredible sculpture Mr. Alm. Love to see more of your fantastic art :)
The level of engineering in both the rabbit and the crate is incredible. Whenever I think of crates, the leg lamp scene from *A Christmas Story* is always the first to come to mind. I never realized they were customized for what is being shipped!
Would love to see a longer video about how you make something like that. Absolute work of art!!
A beautiful sculpture. And that crate is as well. Love the care and attention! Impressive though not surprising.
I loved the ammount of problem solving that went into this, and the solutions you came up with !
something like a Great Horned Owl in flight would be interesting in that type of art form.
Wow, what an incredible crate and yes! I would love more content of you making sculptures like this, would actually be nice if you were able to, to have longer running series where you make one of these and really show the whole process.
This turned out so cool!
Legitimately haven't been back to the Fuller for 20-odd years since my childhood art classes. I will 100% be going back JUST to see this.
Hi Michael - we live 15 minutes away from the Fuller museum and will make sure to get over there next month to see your work...I've enjoyed your woodworking skill on these videos and look forward to seeing your pieces in person!
With your sculpture method, a male lion catching a gazelle would be a great subject to make.
That Rob it is amazing, I’d definitely enjoy watching art creations! Wildlife sculptures!
That hare is stunning. I'd love to see you build a sculpture like this !
Great job... I for one would most definitely love to watch you make some artwork... 🤘
A video of you making a similar piece is what YT needs. Inspiration through art….not necessarily crate making. I say that with the utmost respect.
Not sure what I'm more impressed by - The art of the sculpture or the art of the crate!
I actually watched a person build a crate for 23 minutes and I somehow liked it. I don't know who you are but I want you to know like your content!
Tons of thought went into that, including marking the corner. Very nice.
This rabbit is incredible, fascinating.
A very worthy rabbit hole for a gorgeous piece of art. Would love to see you make the actual sculptures sometime. Amazing work! TY!
I would LOVE seeying more of this kind of art being made 😮😮
One of my biggest fears about making something and shipping out to someone is how to crate it, and there has not been a lot of good description that I have come across. This scratches that itch, thank you for the thorough video. I also don't think I knew about the past sculpture work, that is so cool and would love to see how you do that. I would guarantee at least 3 views, possibly more 😀. Absolutely beautiful work, packaging sells the item too. Many may not see it as it is a crate in this instance, but I bet the handlers will appreciate it.
I love that museum! So looking forward to seeing the exhibit. 🙂
Ssssssh, we're shipping wabbit!
It truly is a work of art! I would love to see how this (or something similar) is made! The head of the rabbit and the paws look amazing!
This is an absolute work of art! (The rabbit isn't bad either ;) ). Amazing.
Yes yes yes Sculpture is amazeballs more please! Nicholas South Africa
Wow! Would love to see more about your sculptures. Incredible work.
Love the piece and really appreciate you. Walking us through the process of making the box. It’s one of those things I always kind of wondered about, but had never really thought deeply about. Just a fantastic walk-through. Thank you.
