Making A Table Top For The Jessem Router Lift
Вставка
- Опубліковано 31 тра 2019
- I added an MDF table top to my Bosch router table to hold my new Jessem router lift. This project is a success! Turned out really well. It is a very convenient tool to have for changing router bits and adjusting router height. Thanks for watching.

The (poly)brush strokes sound lovely with the birdsong 3:43
Thanks. Took awhile to train them too. LOL
I have this same Bosch top and am switching to a lift setup - this is a great idea to re-purpose that thing. Thanks and well done!
Thank you Harold. Maybe there are lift sets that do fit. But this Jessem is what fit my budget. LOL
Awesome job and very conservative in reusing what you had. Love jessem tools and can't wait to get my own router lift. Thanks for sharing
Thank you !!
Great build! You've inspired me to get off my duff and finish my router table. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you and you are welcome. I really like it.
Nice Work Dave! Appreciate your time in making this video. I have the same table and plan to do the exact same thing with installation of my Jessem router lift. I also appreciate your just getting down to business. Some things just don't need a bunch of narrative to git-er-dun!
Thank you.
Good job on the table top. I installed my Jess-em in my Wolcraft cast aluminum top; never have to worry about it warping.
Perfect idea. I hope mine holds up. Time will tell.
Very nice build, i'm in the UK where most of our routers are plunge style and don't work as well as your fixed base routers in a router lift. So i have just ordered a Jessem router lift the same as yours and a pc 890 from America to go in it, can't wait to get it set up,,,Paul.
Thank you. You will like having a lift.
Sweet, that turned out nice and should be really handy,
Kelly Brown thank you Mr Brown. It has been a pleasure to use.
That's pretty slick, I like it
Thank you. Still going strong.
Nice work David. I recently bought the Jessum 2 lift. Will hopefully find the time to build a table like your’s.
Ted Alexander Thanks Ted. Awesome. Yes make the time. Lol 👍🏼
EXCELLENT VIDEO AND PROCESS. THANKS FOR SHARING.
You are welcome. Thank you watching, and comment.
Brilliant!
Thank you Clutions. Still going strong.
Great job! Will be doing the same thing on my grizzly sliding router table unfortunately it doesn’t come with a lift
Artem V Thank you. Good luck with your build. 👍🏼
Wasn’t looking for this video but wish I had found it sooner. I bought the Bosch table to mount in my table saw before I realized the jessem lift which I had bought prior didn’t fit. So I ended up buying the Bosch router also …:/
Thanks! About to do this to my sawstop 😳
You are welcome.
I'm getting this router insert for my table saw extension but it's only 3/4 in thick and may have to thicken it from the under side but either way I'm getting it. How thick is the plate I can't find any info on it as far as thickness ?
Thanks for sharing! I'm ordering this Jessem rout r lift 2 and will build my own table. Did you use 3/4 MDF on the table top?
Spratlyk9 Yes.
Great job sir! Looking forward to making my own just as you have done. In hind sight would you have done anything different?
Thank you Greg. Different? LOL. Well the table top was material I had on hand, that's working out just fine for me, but a better quality material wood be an option. The end result is what matters, that being said, there may be simpler methods to get the same results than I used. Have fun with it, stay safe out there.
David, I like the way you placed bolt heads in the MDF insert to accept the leveling screws in the router plate. I didn't catch that the first time.
Can you tell me why you need the four bolts in the corners of the plate? Won't the weight of the router and plate keep everything down? I sure hope so: I didn't use the corner bolts on my lift.
Well, im no expert. Id say do what ever you are comfortable with. The plate does fit really well. I probably went over board and complicated. LOL
@@DavidBishopinc Yeah, I just don't know. When I installed mine a few weeks ago, I didn't have anything with solid mechanical screw threads to bolt into below the corners. Also, I'm using a 1/16" thick steel plate around the border so I would have needed to drill pilot holes through it, but even then the bolts would be going into about 1/4" of plywood and then 2-1/2" of pine on end below the plywood. Machine bolts into soft wood? It didn't thrill me. I thought I'd let the side sliders keep the plate steady.
You're drilling through the corner holes at 2:44, but it looks like the shank holes are just going into the MDF, am I right? I guess that's better than nothing; there's not a heavy upward load, and the bolts standing in the wood will add lateral stability to support the three side sliders. Maybe that's all the bolts are for. There's bound to be a lot of vibration from the 3-1/4 HP motor over time. Maybe I'll go ahead and do some drilling after all.
This is another part of the installation JessEm leaves out of their instructions. They make an excellent lift, but it's clear they want you to use their table. I haven't seen it but I assume it has metal treads for the corner bolts. I made my own as an extension table for my table saw, using -- naturally -- wood.
Edit: I just found this in the user manual for JessEm's phenolic router table top:
"After adjusting the leveling screws and getting the lift plate level and flush with the table top, the Mast-R-Plate, Mast-R-Lift, or Rout-R-Lift FX can be secured by inserting a bolt through the top of the plate or lift then screwing the bolt into the corresponding corner hole in the table opening using a hex key (Fig. 1). This will secure the lift or plate from moving during operation." There's our answer.
Good way to make your own template! I wish I’d seen this before I spent $30 on JessEm’s template! Also, clever way to use your existing metal table for support. Elegant build. What do you do for dust?
Thank you. Working out just fine for me.
Hi David. What a great idea love it !! QQ the template you did that is that with 1/2 in ply same width as the lift base plate thickness? Just clarifying. Also, what was the overall dimension may I ask?. Any more creative ideas to share :)
Thank you Girish. It's been awhile. The thickness of the template does not matter, it's the depth of cut with the blade that matters. Try and match that to the thickness of the lift base piece. I put the screws in, as you can see, to be able to make fine adjustments levels as needed. The size of the base is roughly 9 and 3/16" x 11 and 11/16". Hope this answers your question. I do have other videos, not sure how creative they are LOL Have a great weekend.
Waiting for my lift to get here....what size router bit did you use with your template to install the lift into the top?
Its been a little while but All I remember using was a flush trim bit, with the template cut to size.
Thank you for your reply,
Thank you for good woodworking tip! I want to try this with my bosch router. Does it work with Jessem lift?
Thank you Charles. It may depend on the specific Bosch that you have. I use a Bosch as well, but mine is too large for this lift.
@@DavidBishopinc Oh, ok! I need to check :) Thank you for your kind answer. Please take care you and your family David!
@@Charlesnsmile You and yours as well.
I know I'm a may be a little late but I have the Bosch 1617 and needed the #02310 Jessem.
@@clutions Oh, thank you very much Mr. I will check the #02310 Jessem :)
What router / motor are you using ?
Good question. Its a cheap one from Harbor Freight. Id suggest looking into a Porter Cable.
more coming soon or what?
Nutshell Studios Lol. Content? Yes. This week. 👍🏼
David Bishop a.k.a. 1EYE WOODY awe awesome, good luck! Let me know how you like my animations :)
@@NutshellAnimations Your animations are great. What software do you use? Did you see my animation at the end of my Office Shelf Video?
If only you could make me one of these. How much would it cost?
Jason Photography come on. You’re a woodworker, right? Make your own. You’ll feel great when it’s done.
I agree with Bob Jones LOL
Has the lift sagged?
No it has not. Still working great.
has it sagged?
No, not at all.
Bosch could sell a lift plate like this as a upgrade for $300. I seriously don't get it 🤦
Indeed.
You couldn't have made that any harder if you tried. To make this cutout its done with a straight cut bit, 8 small pieces of wood and some carpet tape....Thats it....If anyone wants to mount this unit write to me and I will explain the process. It literally takes less than 30 minutes to do...
Raymond Pontremoli Probably so. I should have watched your video first. 👍🏼
@@DavidBishopinc Never made a video....I wished I had that kind of time...
8 pieces of wood?! Ha! Talk about making it hard on yourself... and carpet tape... what are you rich or something?
I could do it with 5 and a half small pieces of wood in 23 minutes
Raymond and naiobi: settle down, gentlemen. As Teddy Roosevelt said, “It’s not the critic who counts...”. This is a fine build from a creative craftsman. Give it some respect.
@@b1j My comment was clearly not sarcastic enough... I agree he did a fine build and found Raymond's critique nit-picky and filled with unclear direction of how to make it faster and better.
My time is worth more than this. I bought one of the entre Jessem table packages and it was worth every single penny. I wanted nothing more to do with that silly Bosch table.
I hear ya Dabba. 👍
