  • UPDATE - JessEm contacted me about the assorted minor issues. Their customer service turns out to be first rate and they really do care about making everything right. In the unlikely event that you have a problem, make sure you give them a chance to sort it out!
    After a long wait for shipping on the parts I"m finally ready to install the router lift into my new table saw wing.
    I selected the JessEm Rout-R-Lift II. It represents a good value, being a high quality lift at a reasonable price. It does take some time to get stuff through customs and into the U.S. though, so progress has been slow.
    Most of the work centers around creating the opening for the lift in the table surface. A separately ordered template makes the job a lot easier and more accurate.
    The lift simply bolts in place once the hole is cut. Operation is a breeze! This really is a very, very nice piece of gear that I expect to enjoy for years.

    If anyone is interested in doing this with a CNC or using a laser cutter to make a template, it's 11.75" x 9.25" and the corner radius is 0.75".

    Forty years ago Fine Woodworking published what amounted to a dialog among readers. The gist of it was that whether you buy new or used equipment you are essentially buying a kit from which you may be able to build what you imagined. That attitude has served well here in tiny town Wyoming. Key to avoiding becoming enraged by very little working out as hoped or on schedule is living life with not only plan B but also C and D. Thank you for the detailed review. Knowing what to expect takes some of the sting out of disappointment.

    Great vid. Helped me get through the set up smoothly - the directions look like something written in the 60’s. I did receive my unit quickly and oddly the screws were all there although they were just thrown into the box. All in all I am very happy with the lift. The mistake I made was to buy the Rockler table. It said that the JessEm fit into it but it absolutely does not and Rockler would not pay for shipping it back. I ended up cutting a larger opening. Thanks again for the vid.

    Sorry to hear about the problems Matt. Glad you finally got the parts, installed and setup the way you want. I built a quick but very useful saddle fence for mine that you can see at the end of my video. I also use mine the other way round for tenon cuts.

    Hey Matt, Finally got this lift. My wife found my woodcraft wish list surprised me with it for Christmas. How ever I had to get a router for it as the Hitachi router I had in the kreg insert plate would not fit. Low and behold, just noticed we have the same router. I am very happy with the two combo and looking forward to doing some projects with it as soon as it gets a little warmer here. Good vid and stay safe Matt.

    Hi Matt, Thanks for an excellent video, very professional, & easy to follow. I'm just about to install the Jeesem Rout-R-Lift Prestige, which is the same as the R, but for plunge base routers. After contacting Jeesem I decided to purchase mine from Infinity, I can't praise them enough. It was a bit cheaper than Jeesem, & the delivery time of less than a week to Thailand was a lot quicker than I expected. I've just about finished my new router table, so after watching your video, I feel confident enough to install it. Thanks again Matt

    Matt, thanks for the video! I just finished installing this same model in my Kreg router table. I have the same model for Porter Cable 690/890, Bosch 1617/1618 but it was very difficult getting my PC 890 into the lift. loosening that one screw wasn't enough; I had to remove the bracket it was connected to. BTW, mine came with the correct number of leveling screws (10) but only the short corner bolts!

    Matt, based on your video, I bought the same router lift and am very happy with it. I too made my own table and routed down the 3/8" +. Got a very snug fit. Just this past week, I changed out the top of my router table/table saw outfeed table just because it had gotten sloppy looking, and made a change. I bought a set of Kreg router table insert levelers PRS 3040. That way I could cut down all the way thru my mdf table, mount the levelers, and adjust things to be snug and level to the table. I think you might have mentioned that using the leveling screws into the mdf after a while can just go bad. This way, I think I have that issue resolved. Also, even though routing to 3/8's is not difficult, going all the way thru was just that much easier. I'm currently waiting on a Dust Bucket so that I can contain the wicked amount of dust associated with a router.
    Your video really helped me take the plunge into making my own router table so thanks. I'm becoming a big fan of your channel and can't wait to see more projects, tool reviews, etc. Keep up the nice work.

    Hey Matt. Nice viideo. I few days ago I picked up the same lift. Just finished the install. I think I have your set screw. They sent me 11. lol The only thing that I found wrong was there is no mention that I can find ref. the 4 corner bolts. There are no nuts included. Two sets of bolts however. I noticed that one set is SAE and the other is metric. I plan on putting fender washers at the corners to reinforce the melamine. My saw is a Ridgid with those pressed steel plates. I didn't remove the one of the right end I just filled in the open portion between the rails. This will be temporary as In spring when it's warmer I plan on removing the melamine I just finished and also the right steel plate and fill the whole thing with a top of MDF with a laminated top (Formica or other). I am not a huge fan of melamine but it does serve a purpose. Thanks for the video.

    Just out of the box, but looks pretty decent. Very smooth action. Handle a little hard to turn: hex bolt in handle can be loosened, and that fixes it. I got a Harbor Frt motor, single speed, because I already have a speed control (which I really like). Some dimensions I couldn't find before: height adjustment of mechanism is about 3". HF motor is 3.45"; fit was fine. The clamp mechanism is a single-hinged pair of circle brackets, hence the fairly narrow allowance of motor diameter. The HF motor is nice because on/off switch is right on the top of the motor, which puts it on the bottom of the lift/motor assembly, once installed. The lift/motor height is 11" (depends on motor length of course). The circular clamps grip the motor roughly in the middle, so you could install the motor lower in the lift, to the limit of the collet wrenches. For the money, honey, looks awful good.

    I have this lift, but I use it in the Kreg router table where it has a perfect fit. I don't have it secured in the table. The weight of the lift and the motor is more than enough to hold it down securely. The only problem is that I can't put my new Bosch motor in it. The Bosch is just a bit too big. The motor I have in it is a Hitachi. That came with both fixed and plunge bases. Other than that, I love the setup I have. It works great.

    Great video! I really like the way you explain things and don't dawdle, play annoying music, or make us watch every moment of your operation. However, the amount of precision and modifying and shimming that you had to do has convinced me that I'm not good enough to get the fine fit you did. So I'll get a router table specifically designed for the lift I will eventually buy.

    I have this lift as well... installed in a cast iron table saw extension wing.
    My suggestion... get a remote power switch for it and mount to the front of the table for easy access to turn on and off (especially in an emergency). I purposely bought a non-variable speed router (Metabo/Hitachi) for mine and also mounted/connected a variable speed controller next to the remote power switch. No need to ever reach under the table to control it now... lift, power or speed.

    I got one of these used on eBay. It is a beautiful piece of gear, the sort of quality we tell ourselves once exemplified "Made in USA"... well, some things are still made to those standards, I guess. I got a deal that included the template. It is worth using especially if there's the least chance the lift may go in another table in the future. See if anyone in your guild or on a website you frequent can loan you one.

    disappointing that my lift, the incra mastr lift II , made by JessEm, doesnt have the four corner bolts that bolt it to the table top. They are amazing lifts, i just made a small mistake with the hole for the lift, and it is just about 1/4 inc too big on one quarter. I am looking for some structural putty (Glacial white corian) to make a patch, where i will then dremel it to the perfect size (i hope). If i had those bolts, i think i could make it strong and tight, with out shimming it, like i did for mine for the time being. Excellent video too!

    I agree that the Jessem lifter is a high-quality piece of gear and that their customer service (specifically, Phyllis) do care. , but I am still awaiting arrival of parts that were missing from the lifter when it arrived. The parts were "shopped" on 12/23 butt did not actually make it into the UPS system until 1/11 and are still in transit. But that is another tale.
    My original question was how to find just the Bosch router motor. What I didn't make clear is that I already have the full Bosh 1617 kit with both the static and plunge bases, and I don't want to be removing the motor and reinstalling it over and over. But I guess I will just have to bite the bullet and puy the basic kit and wind up with two static bases and a plunge base.

Manual says 1/16" inch, but, it's nearly impossible to measure that back off as you know. I like how yours sits, so please let me know how thick that little piece of scrap you used to set it, before tightening it into place please? Thank you. Subscribed...
    One thing for others out there wanting to buy one, and using intend on using it with a KREG Router Table. I found out the hard way. The plate fits perfectly on the KREG levelers, but the 4 main thick long screws, provided with the KREG table, DO NOT LINE UP. They are 1/4" too short. You will need to call Jessem, or go to their website, and order part #02027. They are corner leveling pads, and are a perfect fit for the KREG table. No extra drilling required. Just back out the old levelers, but these in place, and screw back down.

      It doesn't matter exactly what size bit and bushing you use. The combination of the two just needs to give you the correct offset from the template. I don't remember exactly what that offset is, but it's in the directions for the lift.

    Why did you choose melamine over MDF or plywood? Just curious. I've seen a few others and they also chose melamine.

    • @AxGryndr
      @AxGryndr Рік тому +1

      Melamine refers to the two outer layers. Melamine is a thermofused plastic that most often comes in white or black. Because it is a plastic, it is prone to chipping if you use a dull blade but surface is lightly textured and relatively durable. The light texture helps pieces not get suctioned to surface (if you have used a jointer you may have experienced this suction effect). The core I have seen in three varieties: plywood, chip board and MDF. The plywood core makes for the lightest material but I also think it flexes the most. You can use just MDF but you will likely want to apply a finish to add durability. I hope this helps.

      I do mine from above the table. Crank the router up all the way and you can usually get both wrenches on it even without removing the insert from the lift. Worst case you'll have to also remove the red spacing insert.

    • @tylerclark-realtor
      @tylerclark-realtor 5 років тому

      Ok. I removed the red insert and realized there was more clearance under neath the table. I just loosened it by fitting the wrenches between the hydronic lifts below. I couldn’t really get it super tight but I can’t pull the bit out by hand. I didn’t think you could raise the bit all the way up.

      I just clamped four strips of plywood around the parameter of the upside down lift. Then pulled out the lift and used a flush trim bit to cut out the hole in plywood that was slightly thicker than the top of the lift. Once that was done I glued that to 3/4" plywood. Then I cut out the next hole leaving a lip for the lift to rest on. Was pretty easy.

  • @RadicalEdwardStudios

    When I did this I found that the half inch lip was a narrow on my test cut. So I made a free-hand pass with the router to make the lip bigger and the opening smaller. Hey Matt, Really nice work and a great video. Was the template worth the $25? I'm about to purchase this lift to also install into a table saw wing. I think I would probably add a piece of stock with the matching thickness to the center of the template to help balance the router all the way around.

    • @MattHeere
      @MattHeere  5 років тому

      Hard to say since I didn't try to lay this out without the template. Sure seems doable without spending the $25, which was the bulk of my complaint with the pricing. On the other hand, in the scheme of what the whole project costs its not a big component, and everything does go flawlessly with the template.

    • @markbeiser

    Matt: did this lift and plate come with a "starter pin" (sometimes called a "Fulcrum pin")? If not, do they have them available? This is the exact lift I had kind of settled on until I read JessEm customer service reviews. The Rout-R-Lift itself gets great reviews in major woodworking magazines and forums, but many negative comments on their customer service leaves a very lot to be desired - enough to skew my decision or at the very least, reconsider another brand. I can see where JessEm tried to do right by you, but that many glaring comments about customer service really threw up a red flag for me. I liked "SciGuy" comment below about public comments and PR. Thanks for a great video for a newby woodworker! I got a lot out of this. Thanks again for a very informative video.

    • @MattHeere
      @MattHeere  8 років тому

      It did come with the starter pin. It is a nylon sleeve style that screws into the plate, rather than just a simple steel pin. I like it because it acts like a bearing and it can't come out until you want it to.
      As for JessEm customer service all I can say is that I had an extremely positive experience, and based on my conversations with them I don't believe that it's only because I have a UA-cam channel. You can find negative comments about almost anyone online, because mostly only the complainers bother to write.

      Look up Bosch 16176. That's motor only, but it doesn't look very available anymore, and you can get it with the fixed-base (1617EV) for a little more than the motor-only price, or with fixed AND plunge base (1617EVPK) for a little more yet. You could probably sell the base or bases on ebay. They seem to be worth more separately.

    Just routed a hole for it an hour ago with a plunge router and Rocker's pattern router bit (1/2" dia x 1/4" H x 1/4" shank). Use MDF for the template (make sure it's at most 1/2" thick. I'd used 3/4" and couldn't route deep because the collar hit the template before I was able to plunge full depth). I used hot glue to secure the MDF. Some things I wish someone told me:
    0. You don't have to hot glue every seam where the MDF meets the table. Just hot glue the joints where the MDF template pieces meet and a dab every 6" to keep it glued to the table. Once it begins to harden (about the time it becomes cool to the touch, 5-10 minutes) you're ready to work. CAUTION: Finish your tabletop AFTER routing the hole. The hotglue can peel off the finish after hardening.
    1. The plate is 3/8" thick. Route 7/16" (an extra 1/16" deep) to allow for cap-screw leveling adjustment.
    2. Route the shoulder 1" to 1.25" wide to give yourself room to (later) draw a border 3/4" in from the should walls. This makes the step of jigsawing easier. Matt had to user a spacer @8:08 because the shoulder wasn't wide enough for the adjustment screw to register. The jigsaw cut need not be perfectly straight.
    3. The template will get you 99% of the way. You will need to chisel the walls to fit. Don't assume the router lift top is a perfect rectangle -- when fitting, drop it onto the hole in the final orientation BEFORE figuring our where you need to chisel.

Matt's input above shows that the customer service was better than he thought. I do agree that the template is more expensive than it should be. As nice as the JessEm router lift could be, I will avoid it all together. As I understand it, it DOES NOT come with the ( 8 ) levelers the plates are designed to sit on, giving one the option of threading it down into them on all ( 4 ) corners. The plate is also designed to sit on levelers between the corners on the narrow side & the wide sides. Based on what I have read, the customer service is non-existent, no thank you, I'll pass on this router lift plate... I've had my eye on KREG's router stand & it comes with an inadequate router lift imo. One has to spend an additional $299.99 for their best router lift ( 3/8" thick aircraft aluminum ) to use on their table that includes the underside adjustments only router lift made from a non-metal material. Based on KREG's MSRP it would cost $849.98 for their best stand ( PRS-1045 ) & their best router lift ( PRS-5000 )... KREG products are extremely expensive, which explains why I own nothing by KREG!
    BTW, an excellent work around on this otherwise nice router lift that is missing key components & thanks for sharing your experience with it...

JessEm customer service took care of it right away at no charge, so I'm not sure what else you'd want. Gotta remember that only the complainers bother to write reviews. I won't be buying another Kreg anything - that's for sure.
