- We were back in the Cabinet Mountains!
I was going in with Jessie from HYOH-WU and friends Aaron & Roy. With mountain views, a ridge walk and grizzly bears in the area, this trip had it all.
We went up Flower Creek to Sky Lakes for the first night then up on to the North Cabinet Divide on the second day and over to Cedar Lakes for the night. On the hike out I said goodbye to the guys and made my way over to Parmenter Creek, then back over to Flower Creek to finish the trip.
Thanks to Jessie, Aaron and Roy for having me along!

Hey Brother From the Wild, I'll start by thanking you for your video from the MT Cabinet ridgewalk to/from Cedar Lake. Ok, so here is a long story on how I'm bringing 8 friends on the same trip...... it all started started back in 2013 with a crazy idea doing the Maroon Bells 30 mile loop as backpacking virgins. We went on to conquer peaks in the San Juan Mountains the following trip and the jagged mountains of Sawtooth's in Idaho the next. It has been 4 years in the Wind River Range sense. My brother and I also did the Hole-in-the-wall trip through Glacier in 2019. And I'm glad we did. We didn't have backcountry reservations until we showed up at 6AM that morning. That's a big commitment (money and time) coming from Texas without a guarantee! The back-up plan was the Cabinets which we never did. And we would have actually been there there same time you took this video in August 2019. So... I certainly feel it necessary to reach out to you given the irony and your knowledge of the area to ask for every minor detail you can offer. Cheers and thank you!
Sounds like you've hit the major spots! One difference would've been how many people you saw on your trip compared to the Cabinets. We saw one guy camped out at Sky Lakes, but other than that, no one. I would highly recommend this route. Views for days. If you need data on this area, Jesse @ HYOU-WU is the one who put this route together and this is his home range. He's pretty knowledgeable about the Cabinets. Happy hiking and thanks for watching!
I went to Christikon as a Senior in high school and we stayed in three nights at the upper Cedar Lake. It is still the most beautiful place I have visited and I want to go back.
It is an amazing place! Those rock walls are impressive!
Great video!Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Nice. First time I've seen anybody post a video about this area.
I've got quite a few videos from the Cabinets, but my friend HYOH-WU has even more!
Cool video! I've been wanting to check out Cedar Lakes but haven't had the chance yet. It's nice to get a sneak peek!
Thanks! This is one of my favorite routes that I've done in the Cabinets! The walk along the divide is one of the best. I'll do it again at some point. Thanks for checking it out!
good video very well done
Thank you! Thanks for checking it out!
Stunning. You guys give me inspiration.
Love to hear that! Thank you for watching!
I was wondering if you could suggest 3 or 4 hikes in N Idaho/NW Montana a 76 year old with issues could enjoy? I almost made it to Hart Lake .
I'll have to think about others, but I have 2 for you. 1) Cliff Lake in the Cabinets. Toughest part is getting to the trailhead. It's a rough road and you'll need a high clearance vehicle. The hike is easy and there are big views (we have a video on it). 2) Revett Lake is another possible one, though the hike in is tougher and there is more climbing, but nothing too difficult.
Thanks so much. I almost made it all the way to Hart Lake near Superior, MT, but a half mile from lake had breathing trouble and had to stop. That was a big disappointment. I haven't seen all your videos yet. I'm trying to imagine how much you must love the outdoors to experience all you and your fellow hikers do. It's impressive and very soul stirring.
Fun trip and great video! I've been to the Cedar Lakes and Sky Lakes, but haven't done the loop trail, so that's no on my list!! Thanks!
BRING WATER!
I would highly recommend going across the divide. If you're going to do the loop that I did, I would suggest doing it in the same direction as we did. If you go the opposite way and go up Parmenter Creek over to Upper Cedar Lake, it's a steep climb!
Solid advice.
@@mountainwanderer Thanks for the suggestions!
Rockin! 🤙🏻
I wish you would've been able to go with us on this one too!
THE only Thing was missing was you brother!!!!!
This video brought back memories of when I hiked in the Cabinets years ago. So happy you took a swim, those lakes are stunning and refreshing after a long hike! 🙏🏼
The Cabinets are very over looked in my opinion... and I guess I'm not terribly sad about that. They are stunning though! Thanks for watching!
Boy another great spot. Thanks for the video. Take care, Al
The Cabinets do not disappoint! Thanks for checking it out as always!
Me and a couple of friends did this loop a couple weeks back but started from the Cedar Creek Trailhead rather than the Flower Creek Trailhead. Stayed at Cedar and Minor Lakes and summited Dome, Weir, Sugarloaf, and Treasure on the way. Pretty awesome country
Some of the best views in the Cabinets are right there!
Wow new video at 1am..was climbing K2 (on video). This is more civilized!
It's not K2... but there was some cliffs!
Great video! I've had that loop on my list for years. Thanks for sharing. Now I know what to expect.
The walk across the divide was well worth it!
Great video, beautiful shots.
Thank you! Thanks for checking it out!
Great scenery shots, T. Fantastic looking trip. Thanks for the good post.
BTW, a wee bit chilly in N. Idaho this morning I bet......
It's definitely feeling like fall up here this morning!
Thanks for another tour of places unfamiliar to me. Gorgeous scenery on this outing. Neat hammock trick, wish my tent went up that easy! I see what you meant when you said the best was yet to come for this hiking season.
I wasn't expecting this kind of scenery when I signed up for the trip, but I will take it! ... And maybe I will be back again!
No dogs, 😕 ,,, lol
Nice adventure,
Yikes!, your mention of grizzlies made me shiver in my flip flops as I sat here nice and comfy watching lol.
Bears and mountain lions are the scariest part of the outdoors for me
I honestly don't worry about them much. I've only had a couple bears not turn immediately and run when they see me. Cougars, if they're going to attack me, I figure will be on me before I have a chance to get scared.😀
Had a great time out there, man! Next on the list for the Montana Rifle Men and the Wanderer is the Enchantments! We definitely need to put in for that and we have to do it again...As always, the music in your video is tuneful and rich...encompasses the whole trip...Gritty and sweaty! Rolling Stone even raves about it, “Mountain Wanderers soundtrack to life is what the world
Is missing. The feeling is truly a walk in the clouds.” - William Miller, Rolling Stone rock journalist...Take care, man!
Especially love that you put that tune (resonates with me) to the PG-13 swim scene
hahahh, YOU SHOLD HEAR THE ALBERT JOHNSON SONG,,,
You are too kind, bud! I had a great time on this trip, and the next time we go out together I promise that I will bring my guitar. It would be great to get in to the Enchantments! If we can get the draw, count me in!
Not too many people have heard that song... and all of them who have, have been around a campfire.
@@stayhopeful7697 the name montana rifleman or 4 horseman of the walkpocalyps. Or just the killer qaud. Or just "THE4".... OR Their 4 ....or 1,2,3,4. Or Walkley Crue. 4 guys and a pizza place. 3 guys with hair .....and a bald guy.
Wow! Gorgeous!
It really is a spectacular place!
Great video man. So awesome to see how and what you film.
Thanks! It was a great trip! Tons of fun!
15:29 WOW now that is a mountain lake!
That viewpoint was especially nice! I could've stayed up there for a while.
Greetings from Canada! Just explored the Flathead area a few days ago on the BC side. Beautiful, made it down a logging road all the way to the Montana border then cracked a cold one. Love your adventures!
Nice! I'm looking forward to hiking in the Canadian Rockies once they start letting Americans in again.
@@mountainwandererJust curious I'm thinking of visiting down there next summer. What's your favorite wilderness area ? The Cabinets look gorgeous and remote!
That is a loaded question. :) Depends on what I am looking for at the time. I love the Cabinets, The Bob Marshall Complex is one of the best and I really love the Eagle Caps. I didn't mention Wyoming yet... Not sure I could pick one
Very nice.. gonna have to do that loop this summer. It's only 1.5 hour drive from my house. What camera did you use? Thanks!
I use an iPhone & a GoPro. Thanks for checking it out!
The Cabinets are infested with Griz. But the grandeur out ways the risks. Next time head to the Yaak. You may shake hands with one Pilgrim.
I've been in the a few times now and have only seen one black bear. Definitely worth it to take a stroll in there. I believe that Jessie was talking about a trip to the Yaak. Montana has a lot of beautiful places to explore..
Beautiful scenery, love the sounds of nature, too much music.
Thanks for watching!
I love the Cabinets! I'm surprised you made it as far as you did with all the dawdleberries along the way. I don't see that ridge trail on the USGS maps. Does it pass by the, oddly, two Dome Mtns?
The hucks were incredible.. they were everywhere! I didn't even have to stop to pick them... just walk by a bush (cause they were all over, right on the trail) put my hand down and have a few. It was great! Yep, our trail went right on the backside of the mountain(s). Here is my CalTopo map I used for the trip if you want to check out the route: caltopo.com/m/3S29
@@mountainwanderer That trail is definitely not on my USGS map (I use the old National Geographic topo map tools). Should modernize someday and that site is pretty cool.
CalTopo is great, but there are plenty of trails that are not on there either.
