- It was the 24th Annual Fall Campout!
We got a tip that we should check out something near Red Lodge, Montana, and so we were here to spend 8 days in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness!
There were reports of bears feeding on elk kills and it was right in our path! Will we be able to get by?
Join us as we find out on the Granite Lake - Native Lakes Loop!
Thanks for watching!

No one narrates better than this cat!!
Thank you! I appreciate that!
I love the shot of the cattle being moved in the beginning.
A swimming bear... yikes! I bet the rock wall behind that fire warmed the area up real well.
Beautiful scenery that's for sure. A nice mix of flat open land and trees and mountains.
That was the first time I've seen a bear swim! What really surprised me was just how fast it was moving!
What an outstanding film. Congratulations on another epic video. I recognize the humping involved in many of the scenes.....Placing camera walking by....going back to retrieve camera.
Thank you for your field work and editing. So enjoyable.
Go Cats.
This was a sneaky tough hike. It was mostly flat, but at 10,000 ft walking anywhere with a pack is hard work!
I remember back when I was young and didn't think of injuries (and recovered much faster if they did occur) and would hop through a boulder field like that excitement. Now that I've firmly turned the 50 corner, I get what you are putting down.
20 miles or so from the trailhead too.... not the best place to get hurt. But yeah, my goal is to live to hike another day!
Damn! Your Nephew wins best burger of the year. Some beautiful scenery, good looking cuttys, and some awesome times. That's how ya make the best out of an 8 day vacation. Thanks for the adventure.
Kenny is inspiring things over here with his culinary creations!
@@mountainwanderer I saw the tacos and Mac and cheese taco thing too.
Something that definitely tastes better in the mountains!
Spectacular! The Beartooth, like the Cabinet, does not disappoint.
It did not disappoint! Cannot wait to go back and explore some more!
This is fantastic! I'm only half way through and running late for work so I'll have to finish later today. I just love this area. Red Lodge and the Beartooth's were my introduction to hiking/camping the Rockies back in '83. I graduated from Forestry school, sold everything I owned except my tent & sleeping bag, broke my lease with my dirt bag landlord and headed west. Spent a few days hiking and camping around Beartooth pass, went back to Red Lodge and said "yep, this is where I want to be"....Ha, the Universe stepped in and said we have other plans for you young man.
It is an amazing area! I cannot wait to explore more of this range! .. and Red Lodge... immediately upon entering the town I was thinking.. "yeah, I could live here"
@@mountainwanderer You and me both!....I went there a few years ago, it had been 30+ years and I still felt the same way. Yes, I could STILL live here.
My problem is that there are too many Montana towns that I saw that about!
Amazing video as always! The bear swimming across that lake was cool! You don't see that very often. Those mountains are beautiful! I need to get there someday. Thanks for sharing. Hike on!
That was the first time I've seen a bear swimming, and that thing could move! The rolling hills in that part of the wilderness was something that I didn't expect. I can't wait to explore more of it!
Wow. Were to start. What a great trip, beautiful country, great pack of dogs, a griz and a good crew to hang out with, This trip had it all. Big 25 next year. That will have to be a special one. Be hard to top this trip thou. Your music is so good with these videos. Pat the dogs for me and take care, Al
It was a full pack of pups for sure! Great way to keep the bears out of camp (there were no issues)! Cannot wait to explore more of it!
Great journey. Nice to see your group had the time to chill and enjoy your surroundings. The stay at Granite Lake was inspiring, I love sunsets. I'm sure the dogs enjoyed your journey as well. Glad you did not have to deal with grizzlies. Stay safe and keep up the travels.
That evening at Granite Lake was the best one of the trip! Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much for taking me (us) along on this epic outing. You somehow manged to edit 8 days down to 45 minutes and you did a great job. Someone else mentioned the music and I want to add my thumbs up for that as well. I think I heard Flaco Jimenez on the Accordion at one time too! You have some impressive connections, sir.
Can't say enough about your trip and the scenery. I"m going to watch it again tonight in front of a nice warm fire. I'm so sentimental about that area and it was great being able to see you guys going so deep into it.
(Rick Flair couldn't make it??)
Take care and thanks again, Tom
I'm not sure Rick Flair leaves the Cabinets.. 😂 I've been lucky enough to play with some incredible musicians! Even more lucky to capture some of their handy work on this music. Watching the videos next to a warm fire sounds like the right way to do it!
Top notch scenery indeed!
It was really cool, very different from the country I normally hike!
My favorite stomping grounds!
I'm just getting acquainted with it, but I think I'm in love! Can't wait to see more of it!
@@mountainwanderer You went at the best time of year. Grizzly sightings used to be rare on that side of the range. Not the case this year. One followed some hikers to their car at the trailhead you were at. Probably the one you saw. Unfortunately it's sibling was euthanized earlier this year.
That is too bad about the bear that had to be euthanized. I don't think that I've ever been to a trailhead with so many warning signs for bears! Normally they are just at the trailhead sign, but there were signs on the highway!
Amazing video as always! Thank you.
Thanks for checking it out as always!
What an awesome trip report of an awesome trip to an awesome area. Never been there myself, but someday…
Wish life wasn’t so busy right now, but hopefully next year I’ll be able to get out more. So thankful to vicariously get out watching your videos.
I'm glad that these videos can, somewhat, fill the gap for the time being. Honestly it's one of the reasons I keep posting videos. I hope that for the people who cannot get out there anymore, or just can't get out - right now - that they can see some mountains and the beauty (and watch some of the pain) and it can bring them some joy or just be entertained for a few minutes.
Heck of a trip. Great work as always!
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful area! Looks like a great trip.
Thanks for watching!
Awesome trip and video!!
Thanks for checking it out!
Wow, fantastic backpacking trip! I laughed at the end when I saw the great meal and remember those well. After the long ones we ate like we hadn't seen food in months. I just know that the waitresses and the folks sitting around us thought that we would never eat all we had ordered but we always did. haha! Man, you guys had it all, good friends, wonderful scenery and some great canine company. It doesn't get much better than that! Thanks for showing us that beautiful country and filming your wonderful journey. :) :)
It's weird for days on trail I could barely eat anything.... nothing in my pack was appetizing, but as soon as we get off of trail, I'm eating everything..🤷♀️ Thanks for watching!
Me and my wife was up in that area a few years ago. Looks flat on a topo map, but there was a lot of up and down. Found three trails not on the maps. One over rise behind Native Lake, and two to Hidden Lake. I did not always know where I was. Fished everywhere and quite successful. But it kicked my wife’s ass
Yes! We thought this would be an easier trip because looking on a map, it's fairly flat. Not the case! I really loved the amount of water everywhere and how easy it is to go cross-country.
Definitely loved the length of the video,,,,,,
Scary grizzly bear 🐻 country,,, not for me!
Beautiful scenic areas 🥰
It is definitely Griz Country!
Does a larger group help deter the bears? I might have quit when I saw the warning. Right now I am hiking vicarious through you all. Love your adventures. Keep them coming and stay safe.
A larger group absolutely helps! Then you throw in our dogs, and we were lucky we saw anything at all! Glad you're coming along with us!
Morning 3 AM MT here..sleepless night has arrived so happy here.
all those meadows..butterfly utopia!
The meadows were amazing!
Glad we could help!
Awesome video and trek, man! I was waiting eagerly for this episode! I could learn a thing or two from the gourmet meals that are packed a long instead of my KRAFT mac-n-cheese every night other night lol. Camp 3 looked very relaxing. Once again, awesome documentation on your guys' trek through my favorite area in the country!
Thanks! I didn't know too much about the Beartooths, and only decided to start here because Joey started there once. I cannot wait to explore more of this country! It looks like we've just scratched the surface of this area!
What a great trip! Man I love watching the spots you backpack to. And you really captured this trip well. This one had everything
Thanks for checking it out! It was my first time backpacking this range, and we barely scratched the surface! Can't wait too go back!
Must you have to have fires everywhere you go?
Nope. Thanks for watching!
What went into that coffee?
That was our special Wanderers juice.🤔 Just kidding, it's Bourbon Cream. Shout out @headframe - we're big fans of Orphan Girl!
How many Crows had to die in the making of this film?
We did put down a few crows during this one...
