If you really don't know the Bee Gees you've got quite a journey ahead! Their biggest hits were on the 1978 Saturday Night Fever soundtrack album, although they first charted in the 60s.
I consider one of the luckiest aspects of my life is being a teenager in the 70's and getting to hear the greatest music offered to humanity in real time. So much is timeless to this day and has just been incorporated into the lexicon of current culture. Much of the harder rock that I gravitated to didn't make the 'pop' music stuff in this compilation. It's all good though.

Yeah this was all AM radio heyday for the most part, and it's right up my alley. Ironically it wasn't til the 80's that I gravitated towards the 60's and 70's hard rock and metal. But this here is my childhood. Priceless.

My dad was in a folk trio and into songwriting & production. 🪕Saw the Beatles for the first time on The Ed Sullivan Show. 😱😱 Wanted to be a Go Go Girl wearing my Go Go boots! 👢The Beach Boys music went with me to Zuma Beach! 🏖 🌊Dreamed of being a flower child but that quickly changed living near Spawn Ranch.😳 Then the 70’s rolled in QUEEN 👑 KISS 💋

A little story for you. Back in the 90s I decided to treat myself to a new movie that just came out, I was on the train to a town 50km (about 40ml) away ha to do the early screening. All the School kids were getting on at different stations, 2 sat behind me and the next stop there mates got on and one said in a surprised tone, " did you know Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings,!" I turned around and said yea they were called the Beatles with John Lennon Jorge Harrison and Ringo Starr. And one said " John Lennon and Paul McCartney in the same band, it must have been good music,!" I said YES IT IS, aske your parents. And before the Beatles, Paul and John were in another band called the 4 quarry men, when they were the same age as you & still in School.. such is the memory of an old Aussie
This just goes to show how diverse the music industry was back then, a HUGE range of styles and genres!! Comparing this to today's music is like looking at a multi neon coloured wall mural against today's plain beige paint job!!
Well the 70's were definitely a strong decade for music. My favorite because I grew up in them. As you can see, many bands still very relevant 50 years later. Some of these standouts will still be listened to in another 50 years!

Bear in mind, unless a friend told you about a band you only ever heard of them depending on what radio station you listened to and if they played them. But this selection is indeed what I heard for a decade on most of the pop-rock radio channels. I gravitated towards those that leaned progressive. If they didn't have Pink Floyd, ELP and Jethro Tull in the playlist regularly I turned the dial on the radio. Interesting to note the influx of disco music in the late '70's, and also interesting to note then how the roots of techno/rave music, funk, soul, and more come directly from the disco era and, important to note, as well because of the advances in the tech of the time, the effects and production, equipment, and just the sheer talent/charisma of musicians. I enjoyed the hell out of this stroll through the past. We're talkin' my high school years. But, while I HEARD a lot of radio, I wasn't LISTENING to the radio myself. Radio was just kind of ubiquitous. There was a radio on just about everywhere. Transistor radios with a 9V battery if nothing else. Those were a big thing back then. "A radio I can carry in my pocket?!" Anyway...I was shopping the used record shops for Yes, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Gong, Pink Floyd...and mucho mas. Those were great days finger-walking through thousands of used records. Truly, with five out of six decades paying attention (the first ten years are blurry...but there was always the Beatles), that first decade of witnessing '70's music real time? It was the best decade of music since, and for most before. Biased? Yup. But I've got the "receipts"! Blessings.
Bee Gee's are epic. There are some good documentaries on them. Andy Gibb was the younger brother that didn't join the group when they started - he was a baby. You saw him in 2 of the clips when he went on his own.
It is amazing how you grow up listening to one Kind of music and then all of a sudden you find out that you have been missing out on a lot but hey you are here now I hope you enjoy the ride and appreciate all the great music that come before
Having been a child/teen in the 70's I recognize MOST of these songs.. there were a few I was like "HUH?" and a few that were "one hit wonders" and some that I was like "eew"... I was into Rush, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Journey, Peter Frampton etc... and other rock music, was never a fan of disco or other "whatever that was" music... LOL None of my bands were huge radio bands.. some of the songs were played but the stuff that's still getting listened to today... wasn't big radio hits.. prog rock primarily... some of that other "crap" from the 70's.. no one listens to now.

One that I recall mentioning was Gilbert O’Sullivan “Alone Again (Naturally).” For the most part, your reactions pertain to either astonishment or feeling good. I grew up listening to this music. I watch a lot of music reviewers and the one thing I’ve noticed is that there are a lot of reviewers trying to figure out genre. Having grown up in the 70’s listening to all of this music I can tell you there was no genre. Yes, there were different types of music, but, it was all played on the same radio station. To us it was just music, radio music. One thing I can take away from this great video is diversity. It was just music ya’all. We all listened to it. All of us!
There were a few in there that I had never heard on the radio growing up during that era, or even heard of. One of those that I did know...I can't stand at all. The rest were great songs that helped give me a great appreciation for music.

Ohh so much wonderful, and some stupid music too……but I remember a lot of them. I was in beginning of my teenage from 75/76. If you remember Elton John there he was a very close friend to Freddie…..nice to see all the song I learn dancing too 💃🏼💃🏼🤩
So many one-hit wonders, disco, etc. I guess this was based on Billboard charts, internationally. We had to suffer through a ton of bad music unless we had FM radio access to a city station. Note there’s one Queen song, no Rush, no Zeppelin, no Pink Floyd, no Yes, and almost no real rock. Shocked at how many Three Dog Night songs hit #1, though!
I'm totally sure this was an UK list. '74 may : ABBA - Waterloo , '76 april : Brotherhood of men - Save all your kisses for me . Both song was Eurovision winner in that time. Too much ABBA and Bee Gees song was on this list.
React to Cinema Show & Aisle of Plenty tracks from the same album, Selling England by the Pound; they are amazing. Aisle of plenty is a play on words about shopping at English supermarkets, e.g., Thankful for her Fine Fare (former UK supermarket) discount, "Tess co-operates" = Tesco (a large UK supermarket).
No doubt the 70s had a lot of great music, but to me the best decade of music was the 80s. The 80s saw an explosion of many new musical styles while perfecting what was created in the 70s, and had a ton of very catchy hit songs!
In the 70s there was a big division between the music released as singles and that released in albums only, which is why many big bands of the 70s don't appear among this selection, I guess: bands like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, for instance, but there are many others.
Bee Gees (Brother's Gibb), were the disco band to be sure. I never really cared for them other than maybe Stayin' Alive but they were really popular. The music was so varied in the 70's and I attribute that to radio which played everything and did not stick to any single genre of music. That was a fun roll-back in time for me. Three Dog Night is a band you should react to from that era and also, who doesn't love YMCA? Too much fun.
This is late, but two British acts from the 60s jumped hard on that disco train: The Bee Gees and Rod Stewart. (The Rolling Stones jumped lightly.) What's clear looking at this chronological survey is that the ex-Beatles dominated the first half of the decade until "The Hustle". Well, the ex-Beatles and Elton John (one song of his WAS a Beatles song). The funk from various Motown and ex-Motown groups kept things spicy, too.
A lot of good ones, some really good ones and lots of 1 hit wonders. I do like much of it, but I was a Rush fan mostly, with Led Zepplin. Black Sabbath and Kiss near the end of the 70's.
Just as you saw the music get more and more interesting in the '60s, it did the reverse in the '70s...but only on the radio, top 40. By the time the '70s rolled around, the best bands were creating long masterpieces, like Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Zappa... too long for radio, and popular consumption. John Coltrane used to improvise for a dozen hours. Some times it takes longer to get there.
Im born in 53 and live in Sweden. This is the decade (+60s and 80s) I really listened to music. About 60% of the songs were real hits played a lot. 20-30% was songs I don't remember - or never reached outside US. Not much of the music I bought albums of was included at all. No British prog (I think). No punk. Amazing many ABBA (from Sweden) - much more impact in % than expected. They are really skilful, but the situation was special in Sweden... About 20+ songs are important, good, to recomend! But you will miss a lot of the music you have shown so far to like. All songs longer than 3-4 minutes. Everything exotic. Everything controversal (eg Zappa). Etc. Use the comments, not all, but most are interesting, important, eternal. Most US radio hits are not.

It was Lori Lieberman who wrote it. She'd seen McLean performing his song Empty Chairs and it influenced her writing this song. About who "makes the list": it's always based on sales, just like who gets into the RR Hall of Fame (plus politics in that instance). But sales are a poor indicator of what is good. Sales of junk food still far exceeds sales of healthy food, for example. Same with music, and that's why a lot of stuff on this "list" resembles junk food. Peace.

There are some good youtube channels for this but a lot of these list videos are pretty lame. I lived through the era, collect records, and am a regularly performing musician FWIW. This guy has genuine enthusiasm. He would do well to read up and build a list of what he wants to explore.
As mentioned above, Lori Lieberman was the original artist behind Killing Me Softly and Roberta admitted that she heard Lieberman's version on a plane ride as part of the in-flight entertainment and immediately called her label to license the song to make a proper cover. There's a dark story about how Lieberman's label tried to suppress the origins of the song, and she has received no royalties for Roberta or The Fugee's covers of the song. It's really quite sad.

feels like music started to branch out to many genres in the 70s and peaked in the 80s and 90s, then started narrowed down again in the 2000s.

Ohh so much wonderful, and some stupid music too……but I remember a lot of them. I was in beginning of my teenage from 75/76. If you remember Elton John there he was a very close friend to Freddie…..nice to see all the song I learn dancing too 💃🏼💃🏼🤩
So many one-hit wonders, disco, etc. I guess this was based on Billboard charts, internationally. We had to suffer through a ton of bad music unless we had FM radio access to a city station. Note there’s one Queen song, no Rush, no Zeppelin, no Pink Floyd, no Yes, and almost no real rock. Shocked at how many Three Dog Night songs hit #1, though!

I'm totally sure this was an UK list. '74 may : ABBA - Waterloo , '76 april : Brotherhood of men - Save all your kisses for me . Both song was Eurovision winner in that time. Too much ABBA and Bee Gees song was on this list.

No doubt the 70s had a lot of great music, but to me the best decade of music was the 80s. The 80s saw an explosion of many new musical styles while perfecting what was created in the 70s, and had a ton of very catchy hit songs!
In the 70s there was a big division between the music released as singles and that released in albums only, which is why many big bands of the 70s don't appear among this selection, I guess: bands like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, for instance, but there are many others.
Bee Gees (Brother's Gibb), were the disco band to be sure. I never really cared for them other than maybe Stayin' Alive but they were really popular. The music was so varied in the 70's and I attribute that to radio which played everything and did not stick to any single genre of music. That was a fun roll-back in time for me. Three Dog Night is a band you should react to from that era and also, who doesn't love YMCA? Too much fun.

This is late, but two British acts from the 60s jumped hard on that disco train: The Bee Gees and Rod Stewart. (The Rolling Stones jumped lightly.) What's clear looking at this chronological survey is that the ex-Beatles dominated the first half of the decade until "The Hustle". Well, the ex-Beatles and Elton John (one song of his WAS a Beatles song). The funk from various Motown and ex-Motown groups kept things spicy, too.
and the second half of the decade is absolutly dominated by the iconic swedish group ABBA

A lot of good ones, some really good ones and lots of 1 hit wonders. I do like much of it, but I was a Rush fan mostly, with Led Zepplin. Black Sabbath and Kiss near the end of the 70's.
You should watch the 1960s version
Just as you saw the music get more and more interesting in the '60s, it did the reverse in the '70s...but only on the radio, top 40. By the time the '70s rolled around, the best bands were creating long masterpieces, like Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Zappa... too long for radio, and popular consumption. John Coltrane used to improvise for a dozen hours. Some times it takes longer to get there.

Im born in 53 and live in Sweden. This is the decade (+60s and 80s) I really listened to music. About 60% of the songs were real hits played a lot. 20-30% was songs I don't remember - or never reached outside US. Not much of the music I bought albums of was included at all. No British prog (I think). No punk. Amazing many ABBA (from Sweden) - much more impact in % than expected. They are really skilful, but the situation was special in Sweden...
About 20+ songs are important, good, to recomend! But you will miss a lot of the music you have shown so far to like. All songs longer than 3-4 minutes. Everything exotic. Everything controversal (eg Zappa). Etc. Use the comments, not all, but most are interesting, important, eternal. Most US radio hits are not.

It was Lori Lieberman who wrote it. She'd seen McLean performing his song Empty Chairs and it influenced her writing this song. About who "makes the list": it's always based on sales, just like who gets into the RR Hall of Fame (plus politics in that instance). But sales are a poor indicator of what is good. Sales of junk food still far exceeds sales of healthy food, for example. Same with music, and that's why a lot of stuff on this "list" resembles junk food. Peace.
@@donthomasdunigan7004 Quite. There is a broad literature and astute corners of the internet that are better sourced as to who was really doing good work. There are some good youtube channels for this but a lot of these list videos are pretty lame. I lived through the era, collect records, and am a regularly performing musician FWIW. This guy has genuine enthusiasm. He would do well to read up and build a list of what he wants to explore.
As mentioned above, Lori Lieberman was the original artist behind Killing Me Softly and Roberta admitted that she heard Lieberman's version on a plane ride as part of the in-flight entertainment and immediately called her label to license the song to make a proper cover. There's a dark story about how Lieberman's label tried to suppress the origins of the song, and she has received no royalties for Roberta or The Fugee's covers of the song. It's really quite sad.
