    On your next "Dam Busting" video, maybe install a trail cam. Watching a dam rebuild by those beavers would be interesting to watch perhaps in fast speed. Wildlife always has a few surprises for us and helps us understand them better so that we can exist together in harmony. I enjoy your channel.

    I can help you with your beaver problem. I live on the Sol Duc River in Washington state and we have a salmon Habitat project that has a large culvert that beaver love to plug up. What I found that helps keep it open is a motion sensor battery operated LED light that is waterproof and stays on for 30 seconds. A trail camera will not work the flash does not stay on long enough. The 30 second light is enough to make them drop the stuff and run. So get 2 on them to cover all angles and a couple of metal posts to pound down in the dam . Wrap the lights on the posts and point them to where the Beavers swim up to the hole you make. I have used this trick for a few years and even got our County road dept to try it. The Batteries last for months. You get the lights at Amazon for about $ 39.99.

      Excellent suggestion Dave! I checked Amazon and there seem to be hundreds to choose from. Would you recommend one? I got some solar-powered, motion activated floodlights a while back and they barely worked. I'm a bit gun-shy.

    • @davehahn5151
      @davehahn5151 3 роки тому +2

      I use two types of motion sensor LED lights from Amazon. I have 2 each Equipt model EQBPL092 that I have been using for 2 years. They have two lights that can move 180 deg so you can cover the front and side approach. They are very waterproof we get 125 inches of rain ( I live in a rain forest) and both are still working I do change the battery's AA every 4 to 6 months. You can tell the range of them by looking at the dropped Beaver Sticks 15 feet from the culvert. They are currently out of stock at Amazon probably because of the review I gave them , nothing but Love on these lights they have saved me a thousand man-hours. I also use a Lumenology Portable LED it only has 1 light which limits you to what's right in front I use it for a chanel they like to use. Its been 16 months of use with no problems $ 39.99. The WDFW put this culvert in the creek in 1999 and we have been fighting for control very day sense then. We tried traping them out that just brings more Beavers from down river . We have this Beaver family trained to not block the Salmon passage . This will work for you at night but won't stop them during the day so you will still get a few branches in that twilight time but after a while they seam to give up. I showed these to are Road dept crew and they are using them now its a cheep fix.

    You ever stumble across something you never knew you needed until you see it? Doggo-vision moving through the woods just made me smile and improved my day.
    Good luck in your beaver battle. If a beaver hears running water, it will try to stop it. So if you go the pvc pipe through the dam, keeping the pond side slightly lower than the downstream side will keep it submerged, making it harder for the beavers to figure out what to plug. Drilling extra holes in the pond side of the pipe will allow water to keep flowing even if they do stuff up the end of the pipe.

  • @ianlovi1

    That’s amazing how quickly they rebuilt the section of the dam.
    I like a couple of comments people made about setting up a trail cam after you take that section down again, it would be interesting to see how many beavers work together to rebuild so quickly.
    Another comment someone said using dynamite? That would be cool if it’s legal hahaha…

  • @VickyGeagan
    @VickyGeagan 3 роки тому +2

    Russ with that beaver dam you may want to consider using a couple of 4 inch pvc drain pipes around 4 inch or slightly larger. Maybe say around ten food length or so, and suing them like a drain culvert. What you want to do is run them as far into the middle of the beaver pond as you can to the other side of the dame. To drain it. This will make it hard for the beavers to re plug it up. On the end in the pond if you could come up with some kind of cone shaped grate on the side inside the middle of the pond that should beaver proof it. Hope this helps.

    I use a fence post bar (about 5ft long) to pry up and excavate, open the hole. It helps to clear out as much of the small trees and branches the beavers have braced up against the dam. They won't come out to repair until after sunset. The juvenile ones will come out during the day, the adults are cagey. I was lucky and a deep freeze last winter caused a big section of dam to heave and break open and allowed 40acres to drain.

    My Dad in about 1968 ripped out a beaver dam that was theatening the road to our cottage, particularly the back up dams. After he was done, he put a kerosene lantern beside the break, thinking it would scare them away maybe. He went back the next day, with my uncle, and the lantern was built into the damb. There used to be a thing called “The Beaver Deceiver” one could put in beaver dams to keep them at a certain height. Perhaps that too is only temporary.
    Basically if the environment is good for a certain animal, more will come even if you get rid of the ones living there now. Only when the food is exhausted, do they move on. More trees sprout up, beavers move back in. When I saw all that wide open drone footage, I thought, this is going to be an ongoing problem. If at ALL possible to reroute your trail, that’s the best, easiest way. Then buy the book “Eager Beaver” and learn to really admire this animal that is so critical to the natural world.

    Hi Russel, we're watching and enjoying your videos pretty long time. I've got some suggestions which can solve your energy sustainability your off grid living. You can map the elevation of your land and start to build cascade hydro stations to produce electricity. I know that is sometime complicated and expensive but for some small hydroplant is enough a few meters difference in elevation and it's working. Optimaly would be near your house. Think about it.

    You will need to clear most of the dam every day for a couple of weeks before the beavers leave. The only problem is they don't stop damming. They kill as many trees from flooding as they eat. So they flood more area to get to more eating trees, they don't like using dry land for their movement.

    Can't say as I'm overly surprised that they built it up so fast. You'll find you tear it down during the day and they'll build it up overnight. It would probably make it a bit easier getting one of those tined garden hoes/cultivators. You can reach deeper into the water with it, at much less risk to your hands, and the tines would allow for snagging small sticks too

    You will be fighting those beavers for years unless you trap/shoot them so the easier setup would be to lift that section of trail using a retaining wall. If you have some good rock supplies a gabion wall to hold the trail back as you fill in that area would work and you would be able to see how much the beavers are working as they build the dam along the wall. If you don't have a good supply of rocks simply look around for a farm nearby as they always end up with rock piles as they pull the rocks from the fields and dump in locations around the farm.

    The beavers will rebuild this over night. They will use the older branches if there are no rocks or fresh limbs available. However your area is rich in growth. They are essentially building a lake to live in as their permanent residence, they could care less if it floods your land. Every tree in the blocked area will die and they will use them to make further strength to the dams.

    Nice video Russell,the time lapse of the clouds was lovely. I recommend waders,a shovel,rake and pick axe on your next damn demo adventure. I agree with the idea of others that you should set up a trail cam there.
    Oh,just a thought,maybe you can ask those beavers if they would finish the cabin.
    JK ……😉

    Looks like you have a really big colony going on, probably a couple or 3 pairs not to mention their kits from this year and last year and maybe even their 2 yr old. Hope you have a better day with them.

    Just follow Willow. She knew where the spots were. Loved the use of camera on her. Did you see her ears and head moving? Shes a wild one for sure. Damn those beavers. I wish there was a way to hire them to build you a huge wide dam in all the places you need them to trail out to road and back. With the drones help maybe you should explore more and take advantage of those dams and build them for a new trail out.
    OMG they came back.LMAO Sorry Russell

    I have the answer to why they use only fresh branches! They need them fresh because that is their food! The live off what they drag underground and only use some none-eatables to keep the dam together. Their young can be seen on underground cameras start gnawing from early on the tender branches. I never wondered what beaver ate....they eat wood! The dams they use have an above-ground dome that can be entered only from beneath. They swim under water to their tunnel and reach their above water cave/nest. It is massively fortified . Quite amazing! So, Russel is right. They have no interest in old sticks and branches. It is stale food to them and not nourishing. ------- I bet you get tired of me, but I forgot: they need to gnaw....their teeth are constantly growing! So they head for a live tree for dental care. :)

    Russel, Get you some beaver traps and trap the little devils. Their pelts are worth some money. Traplines and Inlines UA-cam Channel (Canadian young man) had this problem, so he trapped a bunch this last winter. His road remained open this summer. He is fun to watch and no telling what he is going to say lol. Missed you yesterday. I will watch again later for sure. Have a great week. After reading through all the comments, I liked the give Dan a call best. Dynamite hell yes lol. They are very destructive to the natural environment.

      Actually, beavers are fantastic for the natural environment. Though, yes, often destructive for human structures and plans.

    you are gonna have to trap some beavers this winter, and also when you go back to that spot tomorrow the beavers will already have the dam rebuilt

  • @ericmonahan6580
    @ericmonahan6580 3 роки тому

    You could try the pipe through the dam trick but they will eventually plug the pipe. You can fence off the pipe ends to hold them off but my experience was
    that beavers always find a way. I eventually lost interest in playing their game and trapped them out . I have a lot of respect for the work they do but I had a better use for the
    almost 5 acres that they flooded.
