I agree. There are a finite number of 3.2L/G50 911 cars out there. Remember that the build numbers for this model were extremely low compared with later 911. Sure he is only drilling a couple of holes... That’s not the point. He’s building a car to lift and prep for off-road use. Take a fantastic/rare chassis and beat the shit out of it to the point where later it will be cost prohibitive to re-tighten to the spec that this beautiful 911 enjoys. Really sad to see the destruction of a special car. There are so many great alternative makes/models that are not as precious or expensive to make into “Safari” car.

Derek Joon. Actually we do know. That cuda was one of two. I'm guessing they made quite a few of these porsches. That and it is a high mile car... this isn't one of those cars man give it up
Wow they've put up a car for sale? Thats great, I can put up a Toyota Carolla for 500k as well. Now lets get back to reality and look at real classic cars. Guess which ones fetch higher values. YES! its the ones that don't have their interior swapped, their body panels drilled into, suspension changed, and driven in the "safari" manner. If someone wants, they can do that to a car, but theres a 99.5% chance it will drop in value.
Let's use our brains. We have two cars. Car A is a 1987 911 that has 50,000 miles, and has been turned into a "safari" 911, a transformation that costs $15,000. The last 5,000 of its miles have been rough, and the car's interior, exterior, suspension and various other components have been changed. Car B is also a 1987 911 with 50,000 miles. Its still stock in every sense, and has not suffered from a life of "safari" driving. Which do you think will fetch more? Go look at similar examples in classic cars.
Ok, I will quote your article. "It's for sale at Belgian dealer Iconiccars for €129,900." Now guess what that means. It means its for sale. Doesn't mean its sold. You can put a car up for sale at any value. Doesn't mean that it will sell for that, or is valued at your price. Now clean Turbo 911 with 36,000km will most likely sell for relatively close to that asking amount, but will the "safari" sell for their asking price? If you can find me a 911 Safari that sold for that much, I will "take the L"
Guessing you're some 16 year old whose never sold or bought a car, so you don't understand how asking prices, and real values differ, especially on special cars like this. Good luck in the future kiddo

Nice job Matt. I bought an 87 944 (less than 38K on the clock) several years back and changed/upgraded the radio, wheels, tires, air intake, stabilizing bars, steering wheel, short throw shifter, and many other mod to make it mine. I kept all the original parts to give to the next owner. Enjoy!
Very good purchase! Congrats! What I cant congratulate you on is the plans for the future of this car that you have. This one is so clean that it doesn't deserve to be banged up.
So glad I bought my 87 before Matt bought this. I got mine a little less than a year ago. Ever since he showed it on instagram I've noticed prices shoot up again after a long cool off period in the air cooled 911 market. Matt is a market mover. Hes that cool.
I don't understand how everyone is saying Matt isn't a car enthusiast because he's turning his 911 into a safari... First, Porsche has a history of rally cars, its not a huge part, but its certainly a part of their history. Second, at least when he is done with the build he'll ACTUALLY DRIVE IT. I'd rather see cars of any kind, P-cars, BMW, Merc, Skylines or anything else be driven rather then put on a pedestal and let sit for eternity not being driven. The whole point of the car is to enjoy it. THATS being a car enthusiast, not keeping a car locked in a garage to "save" it or retain its value. Keep up the awesome content Matt and fuck the haters. Keen's P-car rally builds are awesome.
As a 911 owner I applaud your bravery. Like you said just do anything you cant undo and itll be fine. I wish I could take mine offroad more than I can now but its just too low so im stuck to the occasional dirt road. Its a blast.
100% agree with your friend from personal experience. For many first time owners, the first Porsche car leaves more to be desired (probably because they buy a cheaper or older one) so they mod it, ultimately messing up the dynamics of the car, get unhappy, then get rid of it. Eventually they buy again and leave it stock. Went through the modding phase and no more...bought a loaded 2017 C4S that I don't have any need to mod.
Matt this was a steal. 1987 is the year I'm concentrating my search on specifically for that 3.2 liter as well as the G50 gearbox. And that COLOR. DAMN.
I don't see why so many people are complaining about the build because it is an investment car. Who cares. Everything he is doing is reversible, and except from a few holes, non-invasive. At the rate these cars are climbing in value, it won't matter in another 10-20 years for the value if someone drilled a few holes in it. Look at collector cars 20 years older than this thing, even complete shit examples that need complete restorations are still worth a fortune. When a collector car gets to a certain age, the value is not so much in the condition, but more in the car simply existing, and a good restoration can easily bring it back to full value.
Normally it's a bunch of WRC style lights along the front, lift kit on the suspension, and big, useless nobbly tyres from a 4x4. You end up with a car that is no good on the road and no good on a dirt track because it doesn't handle worth fuck on pavement and it's worth so much that you are afraid you'll stack it into a bank so you can't have any fun in the dirt. Easy enough to reverse though - pretty stupid because you could just get an old 90's WRX, leave it stock, and have a load of fun in the dirt without giving a fuck if you break it.
I can see why this is causing a stir. I've been following The Smoking Tire for years and you normally talk allot of sense, as a fellow petrolhead I enjoy seeing such variety of cars taken through their paces including modified/improved examples which have been well conceived, but I have just lost allot of respect for you Matt. Yes you bought it and now you own it but when you are a UA-camr and 9 out of 10 of the feedback from your followers/viewers is outcry towards such sacrilege why would you just ignore that?! A beautiful example of classic 911 exceptionally well cared for, why on earth would you ruin it with such awful modifications?! This car / engine / gearbox was never designed to go off-road, why "safari" and why on this particular car??!! And how often would you actually use it to go off road?! Whoever came up with this ghastly idea is an idiot and needs to be castrated. God, I feel like vomiting!!!
Hot take...If you've followed this channel for years then you'd know your opinion is irrelevant. People will do what they want with their time, money, and cars. You may not like Safari builds but at the least we can agree they're done tastefully. If Matt can get a clean car for the same money as a rough example...what? He should pass on it so armchair brokers like yourseIf can keep doing mental fap exercises while browsing bring-a-trailer and tell themselves there's a cherry example still waiting for them out there? If you're so worried about preserving clean and completely unmodified 911s I suggest you go out there and start buying. Prices will only continue to rise for the foreseeable future...
lol lemme call a waaaambulance for you. y'all are nuts to feel so entitled to a say in what this dude does with what he buys. most of y'all will not be affected in the slightest by one guy 'bastardizing' one 911. If you're so worried about it, buy your own and preserve it. If you can't afford that, what the fuck's it matter to you anyway?
+Greg Williams Well I just replied that because you asked why he was going to do a safari build on that car, which to me indicates that you didn't agree with it. On top of that, you then suggested things which in your opinion he should do to the car. So felt it apt to state that what you suggested was your opinion, however the car belongs to Matt, which means he sees the direction of the car differently.
Oh boy 😮 !!! At first I was like what in the World but after watching your Porsche rally Tuned video I get it. I don’t think I have ever seen you this happy as you were in that video. Enjoy Matt!!!!!

please dont safari build this car keep her similar to how she is now
100% agree with your friend from personal experience.
Safari build ? Can we not have a Mike Lowrey bad boys build…?
Good buy! Colour is gorgeous. Too nice to change. Keep it stock. Buy a less perfect one to customise.
What is a safari build?? I like this car how it is.
Tyzfim well you give Matt $20k more than he paid for it and he might sell it to you
Sweet car! I love all 911’s but I think this era actually looks the best.
A Porsche with old tires... Careful Matt. We've lot to many to that combo already.
OMG, Yup sticking around, can't wait to see the final product!! It's going to be awesome.
Who else who listens to the podcast feels like theyve been waiting forever for this?
Yeah he's been talking about getting a porsche for forever haha.
Don't listen to the guys hating on the safari build Matt. It will make your car stand out.👍👍👍👍👍👍
That's too good to build that way! Start with something less well preserved if you're going to rebuild it anyways
Do you watch the whole video? he got this one with the same price as the beat up one so stfu
Matt Wasilewicz best comment I’ve read on here so far
Huge congrats, Matt. I just sold my ‘88 Carrera. Great cars. Enjoy it and put as many miles on it as you can!
Get rid of the US-spec bumpers and the whaletail and that car would be perfect.
Congrats Matt, welcome to the Porsche family!
Safari build?.......why tho what are you gonna do with it
Matt, honestly, try to preserve this outstanding good condition 911 in it's original form, please do not drill an hack it.
Ah, it's 4am Matt!
Why ruin the car. Rally porsche looks ridiculous, history or no history of rallying. Keep it as is, its beautiful.
I have no idea what safari build is but please don't do it
Normally it's a bunch of WRC style lights along the front, lift kit on the suspension, and big, useless nobbly tyres from a 4x4.
I cant wait to see the progress. Please keep us updated as you go.
Prices will only continue to rise for the foreseeable future...
read more for a surprise
how about he does whatever he wants with a car he paid for?
lol lemme call a waaaambulance for you.
y'all are nuts to feel so entitled to a say in what this dude does with what he buys. most of y'all will not be affected in the slightest by one guy 'bastardizing' one 911. If you're so worried about it, buy your own and preserve it. If you can't afford that, what the fuck's it matter to you anyway?
I always dreamed of having a 70s/80s/90s 911 in manual transmission, beautiful car Matt!!!
The car is too good for you to start ruining. Drilling holes and a roof-rack indeed. It's depressing.
great car to keep it stock and just smile every driven mile ...
One question. Why tf are you going to do a safari build on an 87 911?
Put some coilovers on it, upgrade brakes, etc. make it a nice street cruiser
Well that's what you would do. But it's not what Matt would do.
CockatooDude uhm. Ok..
Pleeeeease don't safari it. 😣
Glad you are not doing anything boring with it. Definitely the color lowers the price. I always thought this color was a bit pink and also a champagne Porche will sit forever as well.
Welcome to the Club! I've got a fairly built Black '88. It's a blast. I need to find a set of 17's so i can fit some non-Fuzion rubber on my car. The steve wong chip makes a WORLD of difference. It pulls much harder to redline and feels much less lazy
Finally an actual owner of an 1980s porsche commenting! Keep up the good work on your channel Tedward!
Thanks Rob! Can't wait until spring. Lots of fun planned with the outlaw once it gets some seriously sticky rubber
terrific buy brother! Make it yours and keep us posted.
