This is one of the greatest guitar lines ever, Keith Richards opening is unbelievable, and Mick Tayler's solo in the second half is increadably smooth.
Are you sure Kieth Richard played on this ... according to the story I read this song was recorded without keith Richards knowledge. Despite the songwriting credits it was a jagger / Taylor composition and the song ended before the jam at the end ... they just let the tape roll while the band continued and they decided to keep it in the song. Keith might have added a his guitar as an overdub ... I know Mick Jagger plays guitar but not that well in 1970 ... but the main riff was Mick taylor
Everything on this track is fantastic!! Charlie Watts is one of the best pocket-drummers ever recorded, Keith' soloing in here is just what it needs to be; Mick's gritty vocal is always a fit; Just a terrific song. One of my favorite Stones songs and it's really hard to narrow them down!
This song has been one of my favorite songs ever, from any artist. Ever since the first time I heard it in 1971. Still sounds great all these years later.
What a great album “Sticky Fingers” is. So many great songs like “Sister Morphine” , “Dead Flowers” & “Wild Horses”. And, it has, “Brown Sugar”. I remember when me and my buddies first heard it. We it was awesome! Great choice to react to!
Haven’t heard this song all the way through in years- what a classic! Such an incredible guitar riff- epic riffs are Kieth Richard’s specialty. You’re right- Mick’s pure charisma comes through 100%, and the song changes from the dirtiest sounding rock to smooth jazz.
Funny thing is, this song was supposed to be a lot shorter, but they decided to jam at the end and it was so good they decided to add it as part of the song.
Rip Bobby keys! (Sax) he once asked me outside of wembly arena, how to get in to the venue before their their show. This band is such a beautifully genius combination of musically, business, hot ness longevity. There will never be another like then. 💕
The Stones are just one of those uber-talented bands that probably wrote in just about every style imaginable while creating a wide variety of great songs. All-time top tier.
I live your smile when you describe this song. I was lucky enough to see Mick Taylor play this with them on their 50th Anniversary tour. It was as epic as you'd think it would be.
Back when people took the time to learn to play their instruments and had the balls to improvise and not care (much) what anyone else thought of it. Those are the absolute prerequisites to great music.
The second half of the song was accidental. They just kept on jamming and did not know that the tape was recording. Fortunately for us they kept it on the album. Great song, Kieth kicks ass at the start and Mick's solo in the second half makes the song.
Cee, you'll love their "You Can't Always Get What You Want" (must be album cut with the choir), "It's Only Rock n' Roll", "She's So Cold" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash"
@@TheCornishCockney You are absolutely Right!!!! But there a Great young musicians and rock groups out there....we know...we see them on You Tube and Spotify!!! Are they on the Billboard charts or Airwaves??? No!!! The Music Companies are not picking them up because they don't Rap or have a Hip-Hop Vibe.
Keith Richards has said that the jam-out at the end was the Stones reaction to what Santana were laying down at the time. It was like, we'll show them how you really do it! You're spot-on about the drums....and Bobby Keys on Sax. He was something else.
Love this song! I was born in '71, my parents had all the classic rock albums & this one was my Mom's, real zipper on the front, open it up & the jeans are gone! LOL
love a lot of your reactions. I used to go to a lot of Chuck Mangione concerts, I played trumpet and saxophone. Now I also play piano, guitar and bass. Love jazz, blues, and blues rock. And the Beasties.
Welp, you've gotten to my favorite Stones song. Mick Taylor Stones are the best Stones! Bobby Keys and Billy Preston! It really doesn't get better than this.
I agree with you about Mick Jagger. Also looking at the album cover I am reminded of Montley Crue's album cover for "To Fast For Love". I'm guessing that Montley Crue was inspired by The Rolling Stones cover.
Oh yeah, Yoshi's. I'm from Berkeley so I know that place. Glad you did this great song. Suggestion: 2 more by the Stones; "Time (Is On My Side)" and "Time Waits For No One." You could do them both in the same reaction. Some day maybe you can also do some Weather Report, Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius, The Yellow Jackets etc.
Yoshi's!!! On a trip to the Bay Area several years ago (just looked it up and it was 2005) my wife and I were lucky enough to see McCoy Tyner, Stanley Clarke and Billy Cobham on stage together. Amazing!!!! Oh yeah, The Stones are pretty good, too. Have seen them multiple times live as well. Keep up the great reactions!
Love this album and love this song. You mention you were brought up on jazz - which is cool. Little known tidbit about this song is that Mick Taylor was channeling a song by a jazz great Chico Hamilton called A Trip. Check out the vibe and guitar played by a young Larry Coryell. Some of the licks are the same. Keep up the great work!
I saw the Stones at Clemson’s Death Valley Stadium and Mick Jagger was absolutely non stop from the min. he walked on the stage till leaving. He never stayed in one place, constantly running from one side of the stage to the other. Totally amazing.
The Stones were never my favorite band but this album is one of my all time favorites and this song in particular is a masterpiece! This album was in my opinion the Stones' version of Hotel California... this was their finest hour!
This is great and all, but when are you gonna do some more Robin Trower? Like Bridge of Sighs/In This Place? Or Bob Seger? The Famous Final Scene? Mainstreet? Or Roll Me Away? Or Allman Brothers? It's Not My Cross To Bear? Or Soulshine?
One of my favorites by the Stones. Would like your reaction on the song 'Superstar' by The Carpenters. Karen Carpenter was a phenomenal vocalist and drummer. Superstar was co-written with Leon Russell. ua-cam.com/video/FV8ev5SKkX0/v-deo.html
Billy Preston (of course) on organ. [and drummer Charlie Watts considers himself a jazz player and did release an album of standards: 'Long Ago and Far Away'.]
The Stones really didn't need a lot of help from outside musicians, but on this album, they had two of the very best - Bobby Keys sax solo is phenomenal and Billy Preston is an underrated giant in music with the work he did with the Stones and the Beatles and especially his solo work!
I don't think Mick Jagger is a Freddy Mercury in his own band, rather Freddy is a Mick Jagger in Queen because he was there later. That doesn't mean that I don't like Freddy, but that Mick Jagger is a different frontman with completely different abilities.
This has to be in the the "Stones" top 5 songs ever. They had so many songs that were great. Just one man's opinion.
I was fortunate to see this song live in NYC at Madison Square Garden. The place went ballistic.
This is one of the greatest guitar lines ever, Keith Richards opening is unbelievable, and Mick Tayler's solo in the second half is increadably smooth.
Taylor is 72 today.
not to mention unsung Bobby Keys on sax
Mick Taylor’s time with The Stones is so underrated!!

@@davekeating5867 I heard that the opening riff was Richards, but the solos were Taylor.
I saw the Rolling Stones in '75. Mick Taylor ! ;-)
Saw the saxophone... Bobby Keys.
Then in Ronnie Wood at the Kingdome '81.
This is how musicians should express themselves. Over 50 years old and still gives goosebumps. From the best Rock album ever.
ROLLING STONES, "CAN YOU HEAR ME KNOCKING?"...PROBABLY ONE OF MOST OUTRAGEOUS GROOVING TUNES EVER MADE...

I've been a Stones fanatic since I was a teenager, almost 40 years now, and this is still a song I listen to all the time.

A song you just have to hear with headphones. The intro is fabulous, especially when the second guitar kicks in.

Keith is the riff master.

Bobby Keys on the "Sax". Raw gineous!
It's still interesting to hear The Stones in the years after The Beatles breakup.
One of the things that make the 60's rock band different is these jam sessions on songs and albums.....
Absolutely!!!
REAL musicians do it effortlessly.
I'd HATE to be a teenager today, the music sucks big time compared to the 60's through to 1990.
