    I know this is an old video but I picked up my stitches as per the instructions and they look great. No holes or such. I shall always use this method.

    This video has helped me immensely in figuring out the most difficult part (to me) about making socks. I like the way the braided line looks finished. Thank you for taking the time to create this video.

    Finally, finally, finally, the answer to many questions that have not been available in books, friends, other UA-cam tutorials. Thank you so much. So tired of my socks looking less than I want them to look.

    I've been looking all over for a good method for getting rid of gusset holes, as well as different methods for picking up gusset stitches. When I stumbled onto this video, firstly I developed another male knitter crush, thank you very much! Your accent is lovely to listen to, and I very much enjoyed it! But secondly, and more importantly, your technique for eliminating the gusset holes is genius! I have seen so many different techniques - picking up and knitting in the ladder between the gap (no!), picking up 1 or even 2 stitches at a variety of places and then working them away in the decrease rounds... some being better than others, but none of them perfect. But your technique!! It's simple, highly effective, and it allows you to close up the gap immediately and not have any extra stitches to work away later. It's quick, neat, very clear and very effective. Thank you so much!!!

    I have been searching sock knitting patterns which could clarify this for years: you are a great teacher! Thank you!

    Well, I have learned so much tonight from you. Have been struggling with knitting up heel flap for days but now I will follow your method tomorrow. Also, I noticed you knit close to tips reducing first and last stitch looseness. Thank you. Very much appreciated.💚

    Brilliant bit at 5m47sec or so on preventing the hole. I can't thank you enough for so clearly explaining it.

    This was SO useful for me..thank you very much. This was the one part (the picking up of the stitches neatly) that I just struggled with despite make several pairs of socks already. I know you made this for your sis, but posting it on UA-cam was very generous of you....thanks again!

    Thanks for this! It gives a great edge when you pick up the stitches. I appreciate your ingenuity and your willingness to pass the skill on.

    I like this technique. I hadn't made socks in years and was at this point in making a Christmas stocking and the pattern was confusing me but you helped to set me back on course. Thanks.

    Wow, that was amazing! I'm still quite a novice sock-knitter and I tend to fudge when I come to heel flap stitches. It works, but it's a fudge, and it won't help me if I want to knit anything other than plain stockingette socks. This is SO helpful - thank you!

    Thank you SO much for the video, but could you please explain what I should do if the pattern asks me to pick up 12 sts, but all I can get is 10? I tried knitting in the front and back of a stitch, but it just doesn't look right. Please help!

    Just pick up as many as necessary to avoid holes. The number in patterns is only ever a guide; if you have more or fewer, you can always adjust the number of decreases in the gusset to compensate.

    Excellent picking up method. Alas on sock yarn and small needles and or darker yarn, can I actually see the stitches to pick up?

    • @brentusfirmus
      @brentusfirmus  8 років тому +1

      PAUL JORDON You might need to practise with some lighter yarn first, but once you're familiar with the technique you should be able to find the stitches no problem :-)

    If you can only pick up 10 stitches, you may have made your heel flap a couple of rows too short. Good luck! I love knitting socks!

    Using my DD's account and had to say this is great! It will totally be my new picking up stitches way, (unless it is in the MADNESS!) I have always had a problem with this step in socks. Thanks so very much!
    Sock Madness Forever group on Ravelry. It will start in around a week. Still time to join (last day of February,) everyone! Let the insanity begin and the calm of picking up stitches begin!

    I tried to follow this and got lost :-/ It would have been better if you'd zoomed out to the whole work and had better focus for focusing on detail.

    • @brentusfirmus
      @brentusfirmus  5 років тому +2

      Yeah I agree this setup is completely janky. It was only ever intended for single use by one family member, so the production values were not high.

      @@brentusfirmus If you want to do another with the above suggestions I might be able to get a better grip of it. As it stands, I salvaged what I did and am now doing decreases, but it looks like I've got an extra knitted section and 2 lines of opposite facing braids(!)
