My sweet Scottie is 11 years old now and I honestly don't know what I'd do without him. My husband passed away suddenly a few months ago and Brodie just never leaves my side now. He's the best little fellow ever and the best gift my husband ever gave me. 💕
Your video is pretty accurate about their disposition. They're smart, stubborn, powerful and fearless. One of mine attacked a bear and drove it away. Not always a good family pet for little kids. One of mine did run through an invisible fence. I've had 7 over 54 years and just lost my last one. I'm too old to get another dog. Miss each and every one.
Scotties do well with cats who aren't afraid of dogs. My mom's barn cat has trained 3 scottie pups and they all love her, play with her, but know to respect her.
@William Wallace Eh, I think is has more to do with attitude. My childhood scottish terrier was actually trained to chase cats to protect my mom's flower beds. But when he was older, we moved to the farm and got a big, angry old orange cat. Kitty had major Orange Cat Attitude, and they just divided the house in half. Doggo learned respect, if begrudgingly.
Before my sister and I were born my parents got a Scottish terrier my sister was born first and when are Scottish terrier first saw my sister They got along really very well and the Scottish terrier we had really very cared for my sister as it did me when I was born a few years later and this same Scottish terrier would also care for other children like to stay around. She even saved my sisters life at one point and tried to remove her from danger at any given point. I think they are great with babies depending on how you raise them
My rescue scottie loved my cat so, so much..he protected him from bully cats getting into the yard, and went into deep mourning when my cat passed at 20yrs of age. We couldn't cheer him up, none of us, not even "his" kids. After 2-3 months, i had to get him another cat. A rescue siamese...and that was the cure!!! Happy, happy again, and the 2 were quickly best friends. Scotties have HUGE hearts!! ❤ As all true scottie owners know!!! (I wasn't going to get another cat, lol... didn't have a choice! And, she was the best cat ever, go figure!! :)

I chuckled, however, at the assertion that they "are not naturally trusting of strangers." ... We must've had rogue Scotties or something, because when someone came to visit, if they sat down, they almost immediately had a Scottie in their lap!
my bestest ever doggie pal was a scottie, not mine, I just borrowed her. They are about 3foot long, of which 18" is teeth! (Her owner hated it that Lilli adored me!)
When my little sister was a toddler, she would shove poor Scotty (real name) away from his food and eat it herself. Poor Scotty just looked huffy, but never so much as grumbled. Scotty was the family pet to a huge family and loved his little humans! (I also know from other experience that scotties love a toddler in a high chair. 😂)

So smart that they often have better ideas about what to do with themselves, that may not agree with what you want them to do. It's part of their quirky personality. And they're clownish and funny, which is surprising to many. Watch on them getting lazy! You have to keep them motivated and interested, as they can easily get bored and when they're bored they're grumpy.
Our Scotties loved our cats and were very protective of them, my sister had a friend over that began mistreating one of our cats, which our male Scotty was particularly attached too, he didn't bite her but that girl had no idea the bundle of fury she had set in motion, that girl never came to our house again.
While I generally thought the descriptions of Scotties in this video are spot on, I feel compelled to point out that bladder and liver cancer have become endemic in the breed. I have shared the last 37 years of my life with Scotties, and I love (LOVE) the breed. This makes it all the more devastating to get a diagnosis of bladder cancer when the Scotty is just maturing from its puppy phase at age 8.
My 14 yo Scottie has bladder cancer after having multiple melanoma. She’s a tuff lil survivor with incredible life force. I lost my Wheaton scottie a few years ago to a very rare nasal cancer at 8. Scotties are just wonderful dogs and worth every trouble
I have always wanted one and finally got one. He is adorable but he is now 18 months old and is still not house trained. I have never had this with a dog before. I let him out T 5am every morn, late at night, plus more but he still keeps weeing and poohing. I can let him out for ‘puddles’ and ten mins later, if I nip upstairs he does his business inside
Are you using a crate (kennel) to house train him? You need to do it that way. The technique is this: scotty has to sleep in the crate at night next to your bed. As soon as you wake up, you take Scotty outside right away (carry him yourself to assure that the first place he will urinate is OUTSIDE). When Scotty is urinating outside, shower him effusively with verbal praise. About 10-15min after meals during the day also take him outside and repeat the same process. Be CONSISTENT. You’ll get there. Make sure you have properly cleaned all urine odor from inside the house.

Never had a problem with cats with our scotties. Never had a problem with any of our dogs since we don't vacinate them either. Got a 17 year old standard poodle, still going strong, (apart from the intial jab).
Our Scottie loved our cats when they were alive. Harry, our cat, was sick by the time Cosmo came around and he knew not to bother him or be loud around him. And so now he worships cats, as he remembers that they get left alone, with deference. When he sees a cat he perks up and its almost like he wants to salute them. "You're like Harry!"
The comment about them not being compatible with cats is untrue. I own five Scottish terriers and three cats. They are very compatible with living in a small apartment with a cat. My dogs get along well with a cat and they leave them to mind their own business most of the time. Mind you three of them are puppies…

Good info and I’ve seen one shown on the Disney’s classic Lady and Tramp Jock. Jock has been Lady’s friend since the first few months living with Jim and Darla, and didn’t trust Tramp at the beginning when they first met but realized about misjudging him after hearing that Tramp saved the baby from that rat.

I had 2 Scotties. Loyal, very very smart, the absolute best companion for anyone looking for a dog that does have great spirit.

My Scottie’s absolutely are good with kids and love them. They are girls, very well socialized and not grumpy. Not all scotties are bad with kids.
