A sorrowfully simple ballad. Linda's stunning vocal delivery conveys sheer heartbreak, struggle and loneliness. She is a true musical angel on earth... Thanks for watching! 🥰
Every time I listen this song brings tears to my eyes, and I've been listening to it for over 50 years. Perhaps, the saddest song ever recorded. There is something so painful about lost love, but, "a love that never was" hurts so much more. Linda does an extraordinary job of bringing that pain to life for all of us to understand.
I'm stunned that this song did not make it to number 1 on Billboard. It's certainly one of the best songs of all time--sung by the all-time greatest female singer.
One of my favorite love ballads of all time. Can never get enough of it. The composition, arrangement, magnificent vocals and heartbreaking sentiment. Perfection.
A voice from the heavens just dripping with emotion. A platinum rating if there ever was one, my opinion of course. Strangely enough, back in the day I didn't appreciate Ms. Ronstadt as fully as I should have. I certainly do now.
Yes, my rating was just my initial reaction to the music, but it's always been clear to me that her heavenly voice will always be at triple platinum status... It's sad that the singing voice is gone, but her legendary legacy will live on for all time through her catalog.. thanks for tuning in!
As the years go by, I am so thankful that I grew up listening to all the great music from this era. There was so much talent out there competing for our attention that we tended to take it for granted.
Yes, I'd boldly say those who got to grow up during the 1950s through 1990s experienced the best music that ever was and ever will be in the history of earth! Thanks so much for watching 🙂
Lovely! I haven't heard this in a Long Long Time! 😁 Always nice when it came on the radio in the family car. I can't remember if my mom or sister had the album? I was trying to find what musicians played on the song and found a quote by Norbert Putnam: "The record was produced by Elliot Mazer. I was hired to arrange and played the fender bass and the electric harpsichord. Pete Wade played the Finger style acoustic guitar, Buddy Spicker played the two violin parts and Weldon Myrick played a fuzz cello. The track was recorded with Linda's vocal, my bass and Pete's guitar. We did three takes. Later the same day we overdubbed the violins and Weldon's steel [guitar] with my Harpsichord part. The record was recorded at 10AM on a Saturday morning at Woodland Sound Studio Nashville. NP"
Glad that you know and like the song! Thanks for the personnel details. So it was a harpsichord! Just 3 takes and you get this beauty of a song... shows all of their level of talent 🙂 Happy Friday!
I lived through her whole career and heard her on the radio daily. Yet I didn't appreciate her until recently. I was pretty clueless about pop music and I just liked what was catchy. Now I realize what an AMAZING talent she has. She can sing any kind of music, and did. She sang country-rock, R&B-flavored rock, and other genres. She delved into standards and Broadway after her Top 40 heyday in the 70s. She could do it all. And she did it as a woman in a world that tried to box her in and hand all her power and agency (and money) to men. I can only imagine what an uphill battle that was, every day. I have so much admiration. As a final note, I was at a music festival watching some folk artists and they kept bringing other people out on the stage, including Linda Ronstadt. I didn't know until that moment that a microphone was superfluous for her. I was in the back of the theater and her giant voice boomed and ricocheted off the walls. Amazing. Honestly, we are lucky to live in her world.
What a voice, forgot how powerful she was, she's not stranger to me but it's been a long long time. So way back to 1970 already fifty four years, it was the same year Elton John became big. Now I understand why she received a reward for her voice. Beautiful!
Really nice reaction - well done! Good to hear from someone who really *gets* Linda Ronstadt 😊 Have followed her legendary career from the beginning - this was very early - she continued for decades to improve, to grow and refine that incomparable instrument of hers. ❤❤❤
You’re entitled to your opinion, and I respect it. But with that said I never understood when folks feel it necessary to proclaim something as “the best”. To make it into a competition. Especially when it comes to art. To me it’s like saying bananas are the best fruit or broccoli is the best vegetable. Don’t get me wrong. Linda is a great vocalist. One of the greatest, arguably. But so is Ella, Whitney, Karen carpenter, Streisand, Aretha, Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, Nina Simone, Maria Callas, Celia Cruz, Bessie Smith, Elizabeth Fraser and I can add 30 more singers to this list at least. All these singers are great, and they bring something special and unique to the table.
@@mikedineen7857 You’re a lucky man. I actually saw her in public twice. Both times at the restaurant I bartended at in SF. We weren’t introduced and I didn’t dare approach her. Did you know she has a degenerative disease?
@@retroreactions....My favorite Linda Ronstadt song is Blue bayou PS I think it was Willie Nelson if I'm not mistaken who said there are two kinds of people in the world those who love Linda Ronstadt and those who have not heard her yet
Yes, the fact that the melody is unresolved at the end was such a good choice musically. It’s discomfiting, which fits the subject matter. I don’t know who made that choice…..the producer or the writer or Linda or the arranger. But it was a good one

Simple? Try it!
My favorite singer of all time.
Linda Ronstadt is the greatest most versatile female vocalist of her generation.
Exactly, she sung perfectly in so many styles! I even watched her do opera in Pirates of Penzance! Thanks so much for watching Randy.. 🙂
Linda was one of the artistes who kept me company through the '70s. I shall always be grateful to her.
Nice, happy to hear she's been with you so long. I've loved her since the mid 80s... Thanks for stopping by...

"Living in the memory of a love that never was." Absolutely the best definition of unrequited love I've ever heard.

Everytime I hear this song begin I just close my eyes. Linda was exceptional at coloring her voice. I can hear the heartache in every word she sings.
Perfect analysis.. What a special treat it is, every time we listen to her....thanks!
Linda Ronstadt could sing an IKEA instruction manual, and it would be gorgeous...
You got that right! So nice to hear her today...first again! 🥇
Nice hearing Linda today. She has such an emotional delivery with her voice. I remember this song from way back!!
Always a pleasure to listen to her. Happy to see the recent interview where she says that the music is still very active and alive in her head...🎵😇🎵
There are lots of songs about heartbreak, but it's rare that you hear one happening in real time.
Living in the memory of a love that never was.
Simply beautiful & heartbreaking…
This sad/sweet tune really shows the range of her voice.
Yes, vocal perfection for sure. Thanks for watching!
Gorgeous song.
Absolutely... and those vocals! 🥰 Happy Steely Friday!
Ohhhhh, yes! 😃Happy Steely Fridat!!😍
Friday!! 🤣
It should be up earlier today!
Awesome!! You keep getting better and better. 🥰😃
Oh hey Buddy….now you hit one of my favorite artists. Linda and Bonnie Raitt. Sure put out some amazing songs.
Hi! I'm glad you caught this one, I know you love her. Nothing like a Linda Ronstadt ballad....

@@retroreactions.... Sure. On my side I discovered the voice of the young Nina Hagen 🤪, very daring style. You should try 🙏

This was one of the most sublime moments of my life, or at least right up there.
Wonderful to hear. Easily one of the greatest singers of all time... thanks!
First song on side B of Linda's Silk Purse album, 1970.
Welcome to the story of the best vocalist to ever step up to a microphone.

One of my favorites by her. Also Different Drum when she was with the Stone Ponys.
Oh nice, I don't think I knew she was in a band before going solo! Thanks for watching...
Mine too.Its my favorite Linda song.

This song and Bonnie Raitt’s I Can’t Make You Love Me are the two most mature and moving break-up songs ever written.

Great, how about “bit of a different drum?
You should go back a little further. Teenaged 1960s Linda while she was still lead singer of the folk rock group Stone Poneys in Different Drum.
Please don't compare Linda Ronstadt to Karen Carpenter. Linda Ronstadt is in a class unto herself.
