You can just feel the anguish when she sings this song. For me, she is the greatest female singer of all time.
And I had a major crush on her back in the day. In 1985 I spent a couple weeks in Tuscon, AZ and was definitely pleased with the local radio station playing her songs. Big fan of both her and Billy Joel.
Aretha is the bench mark as far as vocals. But Linda has a variety. No blues so there is that. Aretha's ability to go louder at the end of her breath is truly epic.
Saw her do this in a coffee shop on the campus of San Diego State in 1970 with Henley and Frey backing her. It was beautiful .
Wow. Lucky, or did you purposely go to see her?
@@kbrewski1 I was already a fan and a freshman at SDSC. When I saw the poster for her coming to campus I knew I would go. I had no idea who Henley and Frey were until years later when I saw the Eagles.
@@bwheeler1970VB
Did she perform barefoot in a mini skirt?
@@kbrewski1 As I recall she wore jeans and I'm pretty sure she had shoes on.
@bwheeler1970VB
Hmmm, I'm surprised. There are multiple videos of her performing barefoot and in those very short mini skirts in that time period. One on the Johnny Cash Show where June Carter Cash was shocked and upset while watching Linda rehearse, when she discovered that Linda obviously wasn't even wearing panties! She storms up to Linda and tells her "honey you aren't singing with my Johnny like that! We'll find you some panties!" Its on the Johnny Cash Show DVD set, 🤣
In addition to her incredible voice Linda always had a way of sounding vulnerable. It just makes you melt.
Not only is her voice outstanding in this song, the lyrics punch you in the gut. I still get chills hearing it. One of the female vocals ever!
The unrequited love anthem of the 70's! Linda was considered country rock back then, but as the decades rolled on she proved she was able to do any genre of music she fancied-- without a hitch! She has an amazing catalog! ❤🔥
Lucky SNB,I envy you
Linda is a icon in the music world of female vocalists. Ronstadt has earned 11 Grammy Awards, three American Music Awards, two Academy of Country Music awards, an Emmy Award, and an ALMA Award.
Actually, I think it was 20 Grammy, more than any other male / female artist, until the early 2000s.
For my ears, to icons from the 70s, Linda and Karen.❤❤
This is my absolute favorite song my Linda. Beautifully arranged, vocalized and sung so plaintively.❤❤❤❤❤
Shout out to the arrangement here because these strings are beyond heavenly, otherwordly, then there is that rapturous harpsichord, one of my fave instruments.
And it is so sexy, too.
The greatest most versatile female vocalist of her generation.
Nobody could convince me that there has been a greater vocalist, male or female in my lifetime. I’m almost 58
I'm 73 and followed Linda since 1967 she was the best I ever heard. 2 years ago I came across a singer 20 years old now Lucy Thomas like Linda amazing voice, technique and range from very low to contralto, they don't sound like each other and Lucy currently at least favours a different style but the sheer talent they have is about equal. reassuring to know talent is still out there.
Sorry but, you're wrong. Karen Carpenter was the best female singer of all time. I'm 61, I should know.
@@richardmoore2124 Karen Carpenter was absolutely phenomenal, but the things Linda Ronstadt could and did do in so many different genre’s is untouchable by any other.
Now to say she’s your favorite? We all have favorites, and I love so many great artists male and female, and some I love more than Linda on a personal level, but Linda’s voice is flawless on every single road she traveled. From Country to Rock to Pop to Classical, to Opera, to Folk to Mexican. There was so many levels where she was flawless!
I’m 57 and have been around the music industry for over half my life. I promise I know a couple of things.
Again Karen Carpenter was also flawless, but unfortunately she didn’t live long enough to accomplish all the things Linda did. 😊
@@richardmoore2124 Someone's opinion can't be wrong. I agree with Kevin but I don't think you're opinion is wrong.
I agree
Her voice pulls you in and takes you on a ride emotionally.
The greatest 'Heartbreak" song I have heard, which is an oxymoron as no sane man would have rejected the gorgeous Linda!
Those strings are the angels weeping.
In my opinion, Linda is the only vocalist that takes all genres and gives us a flawless performance every time. You'll see what I mean as you dig into her gigantic catalog. (There literally is opera by the way - Pirates of Penzance.)
Her vocal range in "Poor Wandering One" is amazing!
Alyson Kraus. Shes worked with heart, Robert plant, just to name 2. Linda,is a angel singing, I had a huge. Rush on her. She's still attractive. It's sad she's sick. I I trounced my granddaughter toLinda, she loves her. I also introduced her to the eagles, and johnny cash.,
I thank the music gods for being alive when Linda use to sing!
Same here. I saw her live in concert several times. She could sing.
In 1981 Linda starred in the light opera “Pirates of Penzance” on Broadway. You need to check out her performance of “Poor Wandering One”.
The most incredible female singer of all time. No doubt. No one comes close to my Linda.
Maybe not the best singer, but perhaps the most incredible, like you said. And, what defines incredible is mysterious. We'll probably never understand it...
This is why I fell in love with her 50 years ago. ❤ Miss your voice and adorable face Linda.
So glad to have discovered (in my 80's) a new natural wonder in Angelina Jordan. Check her out.
You absolutely have to react to Linda's version of "Desperado" - either the live or the studio version....
Little known fact. Song writers Gary White and Jerry Jeff Walker were sharing an apartment in New York City in 1970. Jerry Jeff wrote "Mr Bojangles" (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) at the same time Gary wrote "Long Long Time". Two of the '70s most iconic songs from the same NYC apartment! Check out the Dirt Band
Linda Rondstadt is an ICON!!!
She covered The Rolling Stone's "Tumbling Dice" and made it her own!
Like Karen Carpenter, Linda's voice is unmistakable. Two of the purest and most beautiful voices of my time. Thanks for keeping this music alive❤
Sometimes the right song finds the right person to sing it. This is one of those times...
She can do opera. She starred in Pirates of Penzance. She’s amazing!!
WOW! She can put a dagger right through my heart, still!!! 😍
One of the most beautiful voices there ever was. Her versatility is incredible. She can sing rock, pop, country, standards, mariachi. She even starred I. She even stared of Broadway in the Gilbert and Sullivan musical opera The Pirates of Penzance. She even received a Tony nomination for her performance and stared in the film version.
Such a tragedy that her illness does not allow her to sing anymore.
Linda Ronstadt and Olivia Newton John’s voices don’t need music to move you anywhere they want to take you just themselves
Linda is a mind blower. Studio music sounds great by design, but seeing her live and her performance sounds better than the record😮! she's not of this planet. It's been 45 years and I still am in awe.
Linda was the best female singer I ever heard and a beautiful woman to she could sing any type of music and nail it so great ...
Some people can play an instrument and make it sing, and then there are people like Linda with a voice that is like an instrument.
Great vocal. Linda can certainly put a “cry” in her voice.
I went to Palo Verde High School in Tucson, Az. The same High school Linda graduated from in 1963. I was there almost 20 years later (1981), and she was still all they talked about. She's as beautiful a person inside and out, as she is a singer.
Linda can sing a soulful ballad like this song in a sweet voice, and she can rock out another - very versatile.
She is one of a very few singers that just gives me goose bumps hearing her.
There were so many great female singers in the 70's but Linda is in another league with a very few.
Such a simple song and so powerful.
Of the 1970s singers, there are 3 that stand out and in my personal opinion, those 3 in no particular order are streisand, karen carpenter and linda ronstadt... all 3 quite different vocalists (not just great singers) and comparing apples versus oranges, but all three masters at what they did and how they did it...I would also add perhaps gladys knight?
The most exquisite voice on the planet. I generally prefer her live performances but it’s hard to find this song in its entirety in a live clip. They were usually shortened for TV and they would eliminate an entire verse. Great choice. Nice reaction. She has the perfect blend of sweetness and power. 🌺✌️
one of the best voices of the 20th century. it's sad that she can no longer sing due to Parkinson's disease.
She does not have Parkinson's, she has Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.
@@hectorsmommy1717 In her 2019 documentary she says she has Parkinson's with her own voiceover.
@@stevea1 In her 2022 memoir she says she was misdiagnosed back in 2013 and it is actually Progressive supranuclear palsy, not Parkinsons.
Very good documentary about her - "Linda Rondstadt: The Sound of My Voice". Worth checking out, comes to a somewhat sad end.
Is this on a streaming service or on UA-cam?
@@christhrasher9892I think I saw it on CNN a few years ago.
IMDB says it is available to rent on Amazon Prime.
Ty vm to both of u
I first heard this song at a time when my life mirrored the lyrics. All these years later, I still get misty hearing it. I carried that torch for over 20 years.
One of the finest pieces of music ever recorded.
Theres nothing better than Linda singing that song....shes unbelievable
Linda magic, so captivating and her songs were my teenage anthems. Arrangements were always fantastic, too.
Big fan of Linda's since the beginning. My favorite song from her "Faithless Love.". My wife and I were blessed with wonderful music in the 60s, 70s and 80s. Nice to watch these reaction channels to see the young people discover this music. Retrospective was my favorite album. Last time I checked this is still not on CD.😢 Had that picture as a poster in my bedroom in my younger years.😊
totally agree with your "10 out of 10" comment on this one. nice selection. This song gets me every time.
Just incredible, Linda!!
This song and Bonnie Raitt's I Can't Make You Love Me are tied for saddest unrequited love song. This one gets me even more.
64 and have heard this probably a hundred times. When you still get chills listening to the performer you know that they are something special..
She also does a great cover of Desperado, the live version, and also Down so Low just beautiful.
You have got to listen to her with Mariachi Vargas signing La Charreada. It will blow you away.
This was pretty early in her career, her first Grammy (28 nominations, won 12) - she continued to grow and refine her instrument her whole career. Her Mexican songs are my favorites. La Charreada - oh. My. GAWD. ❤❤❤❤❤
Its so easy to fall in love & When will I be loved. Silver spoons. Tracks of my tears. I could go on and on
That is Linda, 10 out of 10 every time she sings. This was one of her early songs. She really was amazing. There is a concert of he's that came out in 1980 called "Linda Ronstadt Live in Hollywood 1980". It would be nice if you all could feature some songs from that concert. She had an amazing band, and she was at her very best that night. It's truly amazing.
"...living in the memory of a love that never was..." - Possibly the best lyric that completely encapsulates the pain of unrequited love.
No one I've heard ever comes close to her Vibrato. Her range is amazing as well. Always loved her, grew up on her music.
I saw her at the Cellar Door in Washington,D.C., December 11, 1970. It was a small place (163 seats)and believe me, her voice filled that place up. Great show.
And the lyrics
"life's full of loss who knows the cost"
"Living in the memory of a love that never was"
Unrequited love so sad to feel that much and not have it returned.
Absolutely beautiful voice, they just don't sing like this anymore !
Another lady comes to mind with a voice like that is Connie Francis. She comes out of the 50's and early 60's and has quite a catalog of music.
I was going to suggest checking Connie Francis, too. Huge catalog
F'k!! makes me think of my dear long gone mother! she drank until the end and would listen to Linda with a jug of wine in the evening trying to drown her demons. To hear this now just makes me emotional! RIP mom!
I'm 73 and have loved Linda since "Different Drummer"
Stone ponies
Listen to her sing "When will I be loved" you won't be disappointed! You guys are awesome 😊
Live of course.
THE most beautiful, heart wrenching, song about unrequited love that has EVER been sung. The zither gets me every time.
This is my favorite song of hers, yet heartfelt and sad!!!
So glad you guys reacted to this song!
More Linda!! ❤❤
Loved long drives, with Linda Ronstadt playing full blast, You're No Good, Heat Wave, Blue Bayou, Desperado, the list goes on. Great choice to highlight, she's one of the best of her generation. Up there with Streisand. ❤ Was totally blown away, that she lost her voice, I think from Parkinsons . Such a tragedy. Thank you Linda, for leaving us so much to still enjoy of your magnificent voice. ❤
A perfect picture of unrequited love...beautiful, but sad.
I’m crying so hard
Saw her in concert years ago in Austin, Texas. She had such a beautiful voice, and put on a great show
Forget all her talent, Linda was also a mentor. Glen Fry and Don Henley were in her band for a time. You may know them as the founding members of the Eagles, one of the greatest bands of all time. Linda could have tried to keep them in her band but recognized their talent. She encouraged them to go out on their own. Glen Fry referred to her as a beautiful soul and was very obviously in love with her.
First great job on doing a little research before hand. Some don't to be raw (?) reaction but end up sounding oblivious of what they heard!!?? Beautiful song 😍 She is in my top 5 favorite female singers. Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
This song was used in an episode of The Last of Us called (surprise) Long, Long Time.
And fyi, Linda did opera, too.
That episode ( Wow❤️😢😢
One of the best episodes of TV.
Linda Ronstadt could sing an algorithm to align the planets, and bring harmony to the universe.🌎✨🌙💫
You're trying too hard.
You could spend all day on her songs alone
She got her first Grammy nomination for this song.
You should watch her perform it live on the pilot episode of 'Midnight Special'.. Simply stunning
For some reason, I don't cry..... but when I hear this song.......
It's interesting you should describe Linda's voice as operatic. Check out her performance on Poor Wandering One from Pirates of Penzance.
One of the best heartbreaking songs.
Some of those notes are so perfect it hurts my soul.
I saw her and joe cocker in kc 72 maybe
One of my favorites by my favorite female singer.
Was in luv with her back in the day, still am.
You’re in good company! Willy Nelson said there are two types of men, those who have a crush on Linda Ronstadt and those who have never heard of her😎
So good!
I'm actually surprised that you didn't react to this Live like many others do, and also what you choose quite a bit. You'll find that she totally nails the studio version so well. "Love Has No Pride" is another like this from her early years that is just as incredible.
Linda can do opera! Try Pirates of Penzance, a Gilbert & Sullivan light opera.
One of Linda's all time best. Linda is a legend!!!!
such a gorgeous reaction from you both. Linda Ronstadt is one of the greatest singers that America has ever produced. stunning. plus she is a down-to-earth, smart, interesting, fun woman. I am so thrilled that through these reaction channels other generations are getting to discover her greatness! This is especially moving given her health situation currently. A true artist of the highest level!! thanks for posting. love your channel!
Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt, performing “Blowing Away” exhibits two beautiful women with extremely powerful voices, check it out
this is the song that made me realize i was in a "relationship" with a woman who was using me to prop herself up and was never going to love me the way i loved her.
Linda is one of the best female singers of this generation, seen her three times in concert, listen to Lose Again and this so definitely shows her powerful vocals! I also place her in the class of Barbra Streisand because both of them have strong vocals but they never scream/yell just talent
Where does that voice come from? Shes tiny! Just pure vocal talent. She sounds just as good live as recorded. Ive been a fan my whole life.
Her first top 25 hit.
When asked about her “power,” Linda said she never thought about having a powerful voice, she was just trying to be heard over her band.😊
THANK YOU for your observations....as an Aspie I don't understand or even like music so seeing professional interpretation makes a HUGE improvement EH!🍁🍁🍁🍁
She has the best vocals ever! God bless her right now as she’s struggling medically!
My fav song by her. My wife played this so g for us to dance to at our wedding party. Lost her 3 years ago. This song makes me feel like shes with me.
This song is about a guy that get's friend-zoned by his love interest. That's what Gary White wrote and Linda recognized that the anguish works both ways..
I was lucky enough to see her live in Ottawa Canada 1977 for the low price of 8 dollars and 50 cents.
Aside from her amazing delivery, the song has superb lyrics and melody.
As great as she was in the studio, her vocals live were stunning.
You have to hear her sing "WHEN I GROW TO OLD TO DREAM" from the Muppet Show...the note she hits at the end in amazing!
Linda, just an AMAZING vocalist, so powerful, soft, gentle hard, anything you want, she delivers with beautiful passion.
