As a Michigander who has spent most of his 40 summers on the Lakes, I have met many people from other parts of the US who say, "I didn't realize they were this big!" Which always baffled me considering maps of the US exist and the Lakes are bigger than many states.

The first Europeans to traverse Lake Superior were French voyageurs. They were seeking the Mythical “Northwest Passage”~the all water route across North America.

    • @jonadabtheunsightly

They were unaware that the passage (which lies further north) was frozen over year round at that time, due to the Little Ice Age. (It's now back to being navigable in the summer time.)

@@singood7790 Yeah, they colonized Greenland in the eleventh century, before the Little Ice Age really got started; it is probable that the Northwest Passage was open for several months every year at that time. The records they kept are pretty spotty, though, so we don't know for sure how far west they reached. We know of one group that visited a landmass that probably corresponds to modern Newfoundland, but they didn't do much and just went back home. There may well have been other expeditions by other groups at other times, but we don't have written records of them.

Your personal coaster ride through a breath-taking landscape, the superb food you're finding everywhere, the USS William A. Irvin floating as a reminder of its proud legacy, every bit of what you've seen and done here and elsewhere a testament to the daily workings of beautiful, functional environments. I was a research scientist who spent almost 9 years studying the Laurentian Great Lakes -Superior being one of them-and, as it turned out., other large lake ecosystems across the globe. I will always look back on those years with unrelenting gratitude. I’ve loved the Great Lakes my entire life and I sought to study them to give back some of the love they so generously shared with me. With that said, venture away from pies and other commercial distractions and sit upon Superior’s shores in peace. If you’re able to do so, you, like many of us who have learned to “listen,” will hear her unforgettable voice too. And once you’ve experienced it firsthand, you’ll never be quite the same. Thank you so much for letting me see you experience Superior’s
majesty for the very first time. [Edited slightly for clarity]

Lived in a few places, but MN really is the best. Even with MN's brutal winters, there's still so much to do and so much life during that time. People who question this state just don't know what they're talking about. If I had to pick a second place spot, I would probably pick San Diego, but California's cost of living, homeless issues, and other problems really detract from its appeal. No country is perfect but look at people getting k*lled, including children in schools, lack of rights for the working class, inequality not least in health, corruption where the rich can buy both politicians and judges, the American population is getting dumber and dumber every year as the education system is underfunded in all the areas where the rich don't live and it is almost impossible for the smart but poor to get a proper education for the benefit of the country.
It's not because we hate the USA, we just think that you have the opportunity to develop your entire society not only for the benefit of the rich but for everyone so that the country has a good future where everyone is treated fairly regardless of income.
There was a time when in many countries we looked up to the USA and especially in the West, but that is over as development has stagnated and in many areas has gone backwards.
It may yet be saved, but it is this election that determines the future of the United States and which direction the country takes, is it a future of authoritarian religious rule or will the United States once again become the progressive innovative industrial locomotive country that runs the world, because as it is now, you are about to dump it all down the drain and the rest of the western world doesn't want that and the people of America, when it comes down to it, don't want that either.
Don't throw it all away, take the power back to the people

You sure get around the USA, and watching you and listening is so much fun! You have such a great attitude, and appreciation of what you see. My wife and I are from Minnesota (I am from many other places as well, but lived there for 13 years when growing up from my late teens, graduating from HS, going to the U of Minn, getting married, and having both of my kids). We have been to Duluth many times, and also watch the lift bridge in action! My wife is from the town of Bemidji, often the icebox (coldest) town of the country. Lake Superior looks like an ocean because it is the largest fresh water lake in the world (in area), with the Caspian Sea being the largest lake, but it is salt water. The 5 Great Lakes hold 1/5 of all the fresh water in the world! Also, I love your videos, which are most often TOO short!
We now live int he Phoenix metro area, and loved your AZ videos as well. I took my brother and his g/f to the Grand Canyon in June 2023, and stayed overnight at the Village. We had a great time, and neother of them had ever been to the Grand Canyon before, and you can imagine their reaction, much as yours was! Although, you went too early, and it was still cold, still freezing. The South Rim, where you were, is at an elevation of 7,200 ft. (about 2,300 meters), so it gets wold in the non summer months. When we went in early June, it was never cold at all, and there was no snow anywhere.

Bonjour Marie, ziplining, alpine coasters, you are quite the adventurous girl. It's enjoyable watching you do these things,
I would call that boat a ship. Lake Superior is the largest of the Great Lakes, hence the name. The song "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" recounts the terrible accident that happened on Lake Superior in which 29 men lost their lives. Everyone on board perished. They were sailing in terrible weather.
    Fantastic, fun video.

The winter storms on Lake Superior can be fairly nasty. VERY nasty for a lake. Though of course it has nothing on e.g. the Drake Passage.

if they could have just made whitefish bay. gales of november will get ya - ya know. and they will. I still think they blew an engine and it did them in. they were overweight with ore, but I think they blew an engine. never know.

The Great Lakes are so massive that they can generate their own weather patterns. As stated by others the winter storms are deadly and the phrase lake effect snow.

The north shore of Lake Superior is my favorite area in Minnesota. I've been up there 8 times, and I can't wait to afford to go back. The blend of history and nature and culture is just superb.

Superior is give or take about half the size of the Adriatic Sea. It's a monster. All fresh water.
It's the largest of the Great Lakes, as well as the deepest, coldest, and the most water volume.

The lake was quite calm for you. It's hard to believe that boats even larger than the one you went aboard can be sunk on the lake. Big storms come up fast late in the year. At those times the lake looks like the ocean for sure!

Marie, it's awesome that you got to experience so much on your first day there! I hope you are able to get out on the water and see things from that perspective. There's just something about being out on the water that gives such a positive feeling. It's always fascinating to see your love of Mustangs. You ought to go to where they're made. Ford Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan.
I hope the rest of your trip is as awesome as this day was! Take care and keep smiling! 😃

My family and I spend a week every summer in Two Harbors. My wife grew up vacationing in that area so it is the highlight of her year. We camp on the shore of Lake Superior, explore the shops in Two Harbors, and go to Gooseberry falls for some photos and a hike. This year we also went to Lutsen to ride the alpine slide and enjoy the views from the gondola. The highlight of the trip is always the big ships. Two Harbors has a taconite loading facility so there are always ships arriving and departing. We also make sure to go to Canal Park in Duluth to see the lift bridge and watch the ships come in and out of the harbor. There are some really big ships on the great lakes and personally I like to hear the captains salute as they pass the lift bridge. Some of the ships have very impressive horns!

I really hope you spent a little time in Grand Marais. Also a little tidbit about local geology for the Lake Superior region. The Lake Superior Agate (LSA) is one of the most expensive agates sold and the colors vary significantly based on the local geology. Agates found in the UP (Upper Peninsula) of Michigan are quite different than the ones found on the Minnesota side. Some of my most fond memories as a kid were of searching for agates / geodes on the North Shore with my Father / sisters.

As a Michigander that travels to Minnesota for a work a lot, it's refreshing to see the midwest getting some love for once. Usually it's always the bigger cities (NYC, LA, etc) for these types of videos. The Great Lakes are awesome! Great for sporting but you always have to keep in mind that your situation can change in a blink of an eye. Storms brew quick and can get nasty over the lakes, especially Superior.
