Jack was one of my childhood heroes. The way he would risk his life for strangers simply because it was the right thing to do was and still is inspiring.
For me, it was always that shtick about how he has an opportunity to go back to the past, but would have to make some sacrifice involving a friend and how he always would never do it. Eventually that became sort of the episodic staple, lengthening his adventure in the future, but as a child, I always wondered why he never just decided to go back to the past anyway, because doing so would have undone that situation, thus not necessitating his friend to be in that situation where he would have to be sacrificed for Jack to go back to the past. Now I'm older, I understand the value of Jack's decision from a deontological perspective. He refuses to compromise on letting his friends down even if it meant prolonging that future where Aku still ruled over. He sees the value of his friendships even in that grim future and puts that above setting the world right or embracing his destiny.
@@knightstormbringer that was very well put. Basically the same thought process went through my mind as well.
