    Essentially, you avoid conflict by getting the territory nobody wants, and you reduce conflict by taking surprise war out of the table. This lack of conflict (and the Diplomatic points we know nothing about) should make Canada very strong for a diplomatic victory. Or at least, that's what Firaxis is going for.

    There's more here than can meet the eye.
    He is friend and have alliance with everybody. Meaning that he can do trades and make others do stuff wich can be interesting.
    Inmune to suprise wars, meaning he can troll you at the early game having a lot of warriors around to block you. Also settlers can run free .
    Yeah he looks weak but I think he has tricks. Gotta think outside the box here.
    With panteon and extra food early game he can make more districts faster to catch up what he is lacking.
    We don't know what's new in terms of cards , mechanics etc. So he can be even more trickier with those.
    The way I see it they are making civ. To use mechanics that has been in the game that nobody care to use and make them playable.
    So he sure has strategy, so far every civ from this expansion has to be use in an outside of the box set of mind in order to play it.

      That makes sense. The Maoris start at sea and essentially force you to have a navy. In addition their boosts are centered on unimproved tiles. Mounties are going to be amazing; the only civilization that can build a naturalist with military bonuses.
    I doubt they'll be consumed when creating a National Park either. In fact, I expect them to be very useful for settling tundra tiles in the late game (since no-one else will want them), then planting a National Park easily and sticking around to defend the city as it grows thanks to the ability to place farms on tundra tiles. Just planting additional tundra cities for the park and hockey rink improvement to fuel that tourism for your culture victory or favor points.

    Canada's definitely built to be a late game civ, considering how most of their bonuses are locked behind the civic tree. Your farms aren't gonna be more valuable than Russia's bonus until Feudalism, and will only start to outpace Russia with Civil Engineering/Replaceable Parts. The fact that you need to settle with these subpar starting conditions to get to a strong lategame leaves you particularly vulnerable, with the only benefit in that nobody really wants your tundra cities to begin with. The bonus resource extraction can't be accurately judged as of now, though it would be interesting for a diplomatic strategy to be trading resources for favor.
    On a side note, that civil service wonder looks native american in structure. This makes sense with the Cree's bonus being tied to civil service as well, and might tie back to the longhouse's historical use of uniting tribes. If this is any indicator, this wonder could be tied to a diplomatic victory - though it's uncertain what bonus it'd specifically provide.

    • @RicardoAlmeidatm
      @RicardoAlmeidatm 5 років тому

      Maybe being immune to surprise wars helps you last longer early to reach a spike for the late game, also setling deep into tundra might keep other civs away for some time and avoid conflict. But they do seem undertuned.

    • @cinnamonbeardstud
      @cinnamonbeardstud 5 років тому

      Hey guys you should learn about the birth of the Iroquois/Haudnesonee Confederacy. I bet the wonder is the Lake Onondaga longhouse that housed the clans and leaders of the nations within the confederacy when they met to decide policy. It's not a Cree culture structure, and based on history of it being tied to civil service (the confederacy being born during the same real world era) I'm willing to bet hard money it's a BIG FAT HINT that the Iroquois is coming back.

    • @RicardoAlmeidatm
      @RicardoAlmeidatm 5 років тому

      @@cinnamonbeardstud I imagine what it would be like living inside a longhouse during a winter, the elders telling stories and fables from their past. Living here in Brazil it's hard to know what a harsh winter is like and we as a people have preserved very little of the native peoples culture in favor of eurocentric beliefs and customs. Would be cool to see more and more of the indigenous civs pop up in Civ VI, maybe the Iroquois and maybe some of the south american ones like the Tupi from Brazil and the Guarani from Bolivia, Argentina, Paraguai, Uruguay and western Brazil.

    • @dracma127
      @dracma127 5 років тому

      @@cinnamonbeardstud Yes, I had only mentioned the Cree due to how their own bonuses kicked in with civil service - something that may suggest the connection of native americans and this wonder.
      On further thought, the idea of a diplomatic wonder this early on got me thinking. Call it speculation, but I'd be mighty interested if this wonder could do something like Canada's UA, and convert a resource into favor. Namely, the historical interactions between Massachusetts pilgrims and natives could be a nice basis for this wonder being able to convert food into favor: maybe +1 favor/turn per 10-15 base food (unmodified by citizen maintenance).

  • @dracma127
    @dracma127 5 років тому +6

    It's also good to consider how valuable Canada's conversion of tourism -> favor can be. Previous gameplay shows that your passive generation of favor is about +1 per tier government, and +1 per suzerainship. Assuming this bonus stays constant, that means that by the endgame you're sitting at a constant +4 favor, and maybe 1 or 2 extra depending on how competitive others are for suzerainship. With Canada's bonuses towards culture, you could easily get to 500 tourism by Atomic/Information, which on its own can provide an extra +5 favor (not counting any tourism modifiers). And if Canada is gunning for a cultural victory over diplomatic, you're still going to be getting a potential +10 favor by the endgame. On top of that, we already can see several resolutions that are available in congress, and they are much stronger than civ 5: bonus amenities/no amenities from a luxury, bonus gpp/no gpp towards a certain great person, and a dev stream also mentioned strengthened chops/no chops. And of course, the diplomatic victory points. As Canada, you pretty much have dominance over every congress resolution, and can use that to support its choice of victory.

    • @PotatoMcWhiskey
      @PotatoMcWhiskey  5 років тому

      You can easily get 2000+ tourism per turn with national parks and great works and bonuses, so it could be 10-40 diplo points per turn late game.

  • @uzernamefail
    @uzernamefail 5 років тому +8

    I think Canada is going to be really vulnerable until late game not just militarily, but overall as well. Canada gets NO innate yield bonuses, and Tundra farms aren't even a real gain until Feudalism. Look at the other post-Renaissance civs and what they have in the ancient/classical eras for a minute:
    - America: +5 combat strength on the home continent, all diplomatic policies become wild cards
    - Australia: Double production for 10 turns if someone declares war on you, huge yield bonuses from appeal for districts
    - Brazil: Yield bonuses for districts adjacent to rainforests, spend less Great Person points when recruiting one
    - Dutch: Adjacency bonus from rivers, culture/loyalty from trade routes
    - England: Get melee units from founding cities
    - Spain: Combat bonus vs civs of other religions
    Canada's defense against early war is forcing people to denounce them, which gives early warning but at best only gives them as much time to produce a military as Australia without the bonus from liberating cities during the actual war. Australia, Brazil, and Dutch all get massive yield bonuses to compensate for not having strong early bonuses, while Canada just has to wait. You don't get bonus production from Canada, and even the gold bonus from buying tiles is kind of meek considering how little tile purchasing you often do. So all Canada really has going for them relative to other civs is Favor generation. That said, depending on how RELIGIOUS tourism is weighted with their main ability, I think Canada might actually have a niche "relic spam" strategy with the Reliquaries belief where they build a silly amount of early favor and puppet other civs to make up for their lack of direct bonuses.

  • @lostwizard
    @lostwizard 5 років тому +8

    This looks interesting, actually. Cities on the edge of tundra will potentially benefit substantially by cheaper purchase of tundra and snow as places to put districts without crushing decent tiles. Being able to break even on food on tundra is also helpful if you're aiming for population so you can build districts. In fact, I think that will be most useful in the mid to late game.
    Hopefully, Canada will tend to start on the edge of tundra so that their early cities get the benefit of non-tundra tiles and then they can settle pure tundra/snow cities for later cities when tundra farms are more useful.

  • @Tulkas219
    @Tulkas219 5 років тому +4

    The good thing about all the tundra bonuses is that it doesn't mean Canada has to settle all their cities there, they will still be better off settling better land if they can get it. But it does mean that once the rush for the good land has reached its conclusion Canada will still be able to settle lands that will have been largely ignored by the others civs and still make good use of that land.
    Also with its dynamic being pacifistic it will enable them to take land that nobody else really wants as an alternative to having to go to war in order to continue expanding. I think it is going to play out well … so long as you aren't hell-bent on a domination victory!

    @10:45 I think you overvalue Russia's Faith generation on tiles. Trading 1 Production for 1 Food + Farm Housing, I can see either way. Faith yields are either passable with a religion, or essentially worthless, and a few Faith from worked tiles tends to be a very small drop in the bucket of your generation from Holy Sites and religion traits. So I don't feel like Russia benefits from Tundra either, and definitely less so over the course of the game when Farms get additional yield bonuses but Russia's bonus doesn't change or scale.
    I think you're spot-on as far as Tundra still being undesirable and agree with the board assessment. The starting bias is probably going to leave them very prone to weak starts and just being outpaced. I just think comparing them to Russia for Tundra was too biased for Russia's equal bonus given how worthless Faith can be and that investment in Religion can really slow you down. Ignore Religion, get a faster Campus or Theater Square or other Districts, snowball those bonuses.
    So I think Canada will be comparable to Russia, but stronger in Science and Culture due to foregoing Religion and having better pop growth for Districts.

    • @PotatoMcWhiskey
      @PotatoMcWhiskey  5 років тому

      1. Faith is not passable even if you're not going for religion. It has extremely powerful uses at multiple points in the game. In fact faith is probably the second most valuable resource yield in the game due to its power, flexibility and uses.
      2. Tundra growth isn't actually that bad with the help of trade routes, food buildings and settling near coast. Most cities only need 2-3 Districts to be useful which can be easily achieved by Russia.
      Whether any of that changes in the expansion remains to be seen.
      Canada bonuses help in the area where Tundra doesn't need help with, which is why I doubt they'll be anywhere near as strong as russia in the hands of a player. They look solid. A minor tweak that might be appropriate is +1 food on city centers built on tundra tiles just to help them grow a little more in a non-scaling manner when deep in the tundra. Cities built on temperate/tundra borders will be fine, but I worry those deep tundra cities will still be problematic.
    This would also add a strategic element of trying to found cities on tundra tiles right next to temperate areas. To play off the bonus while still having some better tiles to work.

    If you look at 8:30, the Mountie isn't consumed when it creates the National Park. That's a rather big overlooked detail because instead of essentially spending gold/production for the Mountie with the intent of just turning it into a NP, you instead basically get the NP for free and get to keep the unit.
    Yes the Mountie doesn't seem as strong a unit as the Roman Legion but getting a free tile improvement on a military unit is a rare thing in the game so that bumps it up a notch; that's part of what makes the Roman Legions what they are. The Mountie also frees up all your faith for the game (assuming you're not going religion) by consuming gold/production instead which is usually a resource you have more of if you're not going religion. And the fact that Canada is a Tundra civ synergies with that because you'll have all the Tundra faith pantheons to yourself (other than Russia) which can generate insane amounts of faith.

    Anyways, I think they will be a strong Civ in the late game and may suffer in early game. I feel like Tundra farms should add .5 or 1 production/culture or something.... to help out "The Last Best West" trait as it's very weak if you ask me.
    I'm also curious if the Mountie stays with Canada the entire game and is not upgradable. I only say this because of the National Park function and the fact that Mounties are "Canada's Police" in the RCMP, they will always be a thing... I'm going to have to ask on their stream!
