- The slow road to recovery is impacting the mental well-being of Cooper Roberts, the youngest surviving victim of the Highland Park parade shooting, his family said in an update Tuesday.
I knew he was going to be dealing with problems, but this is really heartbreaking to hear such a young boy ask if he's ever going to be happy again.
Prayers , there are no words. Literally.
Oh no. I couldn’t imagine this happening to myself or my 8yo. I know a few ppl older that are paralyzed and it isn’t anything to write home about. It takes time to adjust.
That being said you are young and still have a bright future ahead of you. Put your mind to it, I believe in you buddy! Feel better soon

Every day, new treatments for chronic neurological pain are developed.
From a neurectomy to new treatments withTCES. There are new medications as well.
He'll be able to drive a car, participate in sports, and even have children. REMARKABLE things are available these days!
My first thought would be to start him on an anti-depressant BEFORE he gets to his lowest point. Then look into the treatments I have mentioned.
Problems I can foresee will be insurance claims...if they even HAVE insurance.
But, there are children's hospitals that will treat children and help families that don't have insurance or the financial means.
There are also research trials going on...they are free.
The Christopher Reeve Foundation is a great source of information.
So, pain management science isn't decades away...it's here. 😊
@@danni1993 I believe you meant neuropathic pain. Neuropathy is notoriously difficult to treat, and there is a wide spectrum. Hopefully he’s on the lower end, but it’s definitely not a foregone conclusion that it won’t be a serious, lifelong issue that will take its toll in a variety of ways. If it ends up being a more significant case of neuropathy, I feel for him; it’s a real bastard of a problem.
There’s no good time to sustain a spinal cord injury, but I wonder sometimes if being much younger gives you potentially more adaptability, but the flipside is you won’t get to have experienced a great number of things that we tend to only experience a bit later in life. Either way, it sucks, but I hope his family system will support him as he begins the process of learning to adapt.

As a wheelchair user, I can empathize with this young man's pain and frustration. It's a slow journey, but it does get easier with time. The emotional wounds are often more difficult to heal from than the physical ones. I'd like to say there's a point where those kinds of challenges go away, but there isn't. However, human resiliency is amazing and we do adapt even under the most unfortunate circumstances. At least for me, every year gets a little easier. Praying for this kiddo and his family. 💙♿🙏

Get this poor, sweet, lovely child some serious trauma therapy. Try everything. Look into EMDR. Emotional pain also emits as physical pain. So not only is he having pain from his injuries, but he’s in more pain bc of his emotional trauma. Brave guy!!

EMDR has really worked well for my daughter
EMDR saved my life. I can't say enough about it. There needs to be more than talk therapy done for these kinds of situations. Trauma processing is completely necessary for the mental stability of an individual post trauma.

I don't know of any adult person who wouldn't trade places with this kid so he could live a typical childhood. If I could give him my spine, I would. It breaks my heart but I know this kid will make it.

I think in these circumstances rules need to be relaxed. This little man is going thru hell and what better medicine for him is to have his brother with him as mush as possible. Have a heart you people making the rules. He is hurting enough without all the red tape crap you flag.
Dogs are great therapy for depressed people. Dogs are guardian angels sent by God to help us. I pray the pug dog will help the boy be happy. I hope the shooter physco would get the death penalty, if its reinstated in IL.
I don't think God, who sent the guardian angel dog to the boy, really wants you wishing death on another person. Only God can judge people, no matter how terrible they are right? Don't let the tragedy of that day destroy your soul...he's taken too much from people already!

So unfair for this young child who did nothing wrong, to have to suffer for the rest of his life because of one worthless loser with a gun. Wouldn't it be delightful if our justice system called for the gunman to suffer the same fate as his victim--a severed spine? I'd cheerfully volunteer to perform the deed, despite my complete lack of medical training. Ah well, that won't happen, so all I can say is that I wish every possible sort pf misery for the gunman & every possible joy for young Cooper and his family.

This is why it’s hard to keep or have Faith. This world is full of pain,unfairness, and trauma. This is a 8 year old little boy, I don’t even know if most adults could handle this much less a child. I really hope they are keeping his pain under control and giving him something for anxiety.

My prayers to this young man... I pray he finds peace and acceptance but above that I hope this boy may find pain relief... As an adult 33 who has had chronic back pain since I've several operations on my back .. I just know that he will never accept this and be a peace if he can't be painfree

For me, I hired a stock expert that provides entry and exit points on the security I focus on while I go about my other businesses. Investing has no one way to do it, eyes on the prize!!! according to his family huh. Its terrible what happened to him and I am sure he is dealing with some mental/emotional things but if there is one thing I learned from basically living in the hospital for a year as a kid who had brain cancer is that kids are quite resilient even in the face of death. Its the adults that struggle the most and tend to project these struggles as the childs struggles as well.
You don’t need to be old to feel the way he feels..it is expected..everyone one of the survivors should be getting help from the government in any way shape or form..and it’s not reopening the wound style of help..show them what life is about, love, safety, living..super sad
