I’m a newbie and I was happy to see you just gave the onions a rough chop. May blessings be upon you from our wonderful Creator.
Thank you for the kind comment, and even more, the kind blessings! I'm definitely not a very precise person, so rough chopping it is!
I save
all the peels/tops/bottoms for a broth. Which gets strained. I also freeze all these cuttings for later use in a ziplock bag. I dehydrate onions
in the house. LOVE the smell!
I definitely need to do that! I like the smell of onions, but not sure my family would appreciate the smell as much as I do, lol.
I have an older dehydrator it doesn't have the temp settings it just on and off. I just got a second one, I found it at the goodwill. It's the same kind as my first one and it has 5 racks it was $6.99. Check out your local thrift store you might find something good.
Did 18 pounds of onions for onion powder last weekend...this week is chopped onions...I dehydrate in my garage so no fumes in the house
Yum! Doing this in the garage is definitely a good idea!
I loved using and not wasting my veggies so much that I have 2 dehydrators. Looking to buy a couple more soon. I vacuum seal my results in small jars so they stay fresher. I often make my own seasoning mixes for soups and stews. Home dehydrated foods have better flavor in my humble opinion.
I agree completely! While I do canning, dehydrating is my favorite way to preserve food. It is so easy to use them however you want, in whatever quantities you want. I love that you can make a single serving if that is what you need. I also like to store mine in vacuum sealed jars.
love dehydrated onions plain and flavored. great to have on hand for sure. great video
Thanks for watching. Hope all is well with you!
G'day, Form Australia. I use an air drying/ hanging dehydrator, outside during the day and inside at night for up to 7 to 10 days and store them in zip lock bags in an cool dark place away from sunlight.
I live on an sailing boat.I use this methd for long trem storage, when i go on long trips.
Gerard.
That sounds like a great set up! Dehydrated food is awesome for anyone, but especially on a sail boat!
@@StockingMyPantry Allso, veggies are cheaper to buy in bulk.Drying them allso reduces weight. and inceses storage capasidy on an sailing boat.
@@svlittlegem24 I definitely agree! And it helps that they don't go bad when dehydrated.
One is great two is better. I have five nesco dehydrators. I got them all at Goodwill. I pick one up every time I come across one. They are all running during the fall. Right now they are full of kale and bell peppers. Really enjoying your channel.
Thanks so much for your kind words, Michael! I have 2 Nescos and one Cosori. I love them all. So far I haven't managed to snag any at Goodwill, but thankfully I think they are worth buying, even if you have to buy new. I've had good experience with both kale and bell peppers.
What a great idea! Dehydrating kale.... I will use it when I make Zuppa Toscana soups and Moroccan meatball soup. Thanks for mentioning kale!
We love to dehydrate the spicy peppers too. I love to get the hatch peppers to ripen until they are red and put them in the dehydrated. They are a sweet and spicy treat 😊
Yes I'm going to do this. I want to try the onion powder.
It's so good!
I agree that first layer of the onion is kind of funky to me. I never use it. 😂
I’m definitely going to dehydrate some onions. I love and go through so much onion powder.
Still watching. If I don’t get certain thoughts out right away by the end of the video I forget what I was going to say.
If you haven't made onion powder yet, you'll love the homemade. So much more flavor than store bought. The other day I was in a store with some bulk items. I was tempted to buy 50 lbs of onions, but I wasn't sure I was up for dealing with that many onions, lol. If I buy those, I'll definitely make some onion powder.
@@StockingMyPantry I’m here for more flavor.
Definitely!
Thank you. Watching again 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks so much!
I have 2 dehydrators, one for fruits and one for veggies. The veggie one is for kale, spinach, onions and garlic. It runs almost daily. 😊
That sounds like a good idea!
We make veggie burgers with rehydrated onions, garlic, leftover beans or veggies, with some oatmeal and spices. I put the dehydrated veggies in a pot with a veggie broth and soy sauce. Season with garlic and add a good quality of sea salt. Add the leftover beans or lentils, and stir bring to a boil and add a cup of oatmeal. Use the metal ring from a canning jar to make the burgers on a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 400 degrees until firm but not as dry as an oatmeal cookie. Can be cooked longer if you need to make a vegan pemmican for hiking. Toast buns or eat with a salad for a light meal. We usually make about 20+ burgers and freeze them for when you need a quick dinner or extra people show up around dinner time. 😊
Wow, this sounds delicious! I love the tip of using the canning ring to shape the burgers.
Great share and use of the onions, thanks Rebecca
You are so welcome!
I love having 2 dehydrators
Thanks for watching! Here are the two dehydrators I personally use and recommend: amzn.to/3EJrS3i and amzn.to/3nUxX6f .
I take a finished dehydrated product tray...turn whole tray upside down on a paper towel..fold towel in a roll and drop into a jar...makes taking things off the tray sooo much easier
That's a great idea! In the past I've put things on parchment paper, with a crease down the middle and then dumped it in. I don't have any parchment paper right now, and didn't think of using paper towels. I'll have to try that in the future! It does seem like you'd have to have multiple paper towels since the tray is bigger than a paper towel, but I'll definitely be experimenting with this.
I liked dehydrating onions, it was pretty easy.
It is, isn't it?
Sometimes you need a good cry from the onions 😢 clears the sinuses out.
Good tip about how to rehydrate them in hot water.
Thanks!
This is another that I have not tried yet, thanks for the tip to do it outside.
I think you'll like it. If you are just doing green onions, I think indoors would be fine. But those yellow onions were making me cry and my nose run while I was cutting them up, so they were really strong, so it was definitely good to put them outside at the beginning.
Yes, they will go outside since the begining
I have 9 trays on my newcomers. I was given the second dehydrator but it didn’t work. The trays do need to be rotated.
Thanks for sharing. I agree that especially with more trays, you need to rotate. I find I can get away with not rotating if I only use 5 trays, but it's definitely more efficient to rotate the trays.
Love and blessings ... please educate me on how much pounds of onion powder did u get from the 3 lbs ..... i want to know the conversion ratio ? How much fresh gives you how much dry in terms of weighgt ....... ive watxh 26 videos on this 😂😂😂😂 please help me my queen ❤
Great info! Thank you!❤👵
You are so welcome! Hope you're doing well.
Great video
Thanks!
I remember hearing to rinse the onion before & after peeling them. They have a powdery substance covering on them & thats what causes our eyes to cry.
I have the four shelves too… and might add a few. I guess you wouldn’t want to dry anything with that for fear of onion smell on everything…
I agree. The strawberries don’t taste good on the tray that had onions or garlic. That’s why I had to get a second dehydrator. 😊
I have 5 harvest maids... I dry 200 pounds of plums every year... Doing my onions now that are going soft.
Wow, that's impressive! I'm assuming you have plum trees? I am up to 3 dehydrators and would have more if I had room for them!
I will be doing this to see how long they take on the Presto Dehydrator and I will do the same amount 8cups
That is awesome! Looking forward to hearing how it goes for you.
I have two one for meats and one for fruit and vegetables
Nice!
My dad and I made hamburger jerky. They were great when you’re too tired to cook and too broke to eat out.
I have 2 dehydrators bought one new bought one at yard sale for $15.00
That's awesome! Somehow I never manage to see this type of thing at yard sales. Maybe I need to go to more of them!
Why some people blanch them before and others don't? What difference does it make in the final result?
Great question. Sometimes if you don't blanch, it can impact the color. For instance, when I didn't blanch carrots, they turned kind of white. I've never tried blanching onions, so can't comment on that one. There's a great book by Tammy Ganglof (sp?) on dehydrating that advises when to blanch and when not to blanch. It also has a lot of great info, so it's worth checking out.
A quick blanch will help reduce the strong onion odor during dehydrating! Much lower odor because blanching helps remove the gas in the onion responsible for the strong smell!!!
Have one but want to get the sun dehydrator that you hang outside no electric needed
I would love to get one of those, too, especially since I live in a hot climate.
@@StockingMyPantry found them on Amazon and eBay sun dehdrator
blanch onions 2 minutes/then cold water before hydrating them.
Interesting! Just to clarify - before hydrating them, or dehydrating them?
@@StockingMyPantry dehydrating
sorry, my bad! I did say hydrating I see....in my first comment
@@lillylynn3370 no worries! Yes, I have heard/read about blanching onions, but have found it's not necessary. I do find it very necessary when dehydrating certain vegetables such as potatoes and carrots, but onions work great without blanching, at least in my experience. Thanks for all your comments!
@@StockingMyPantry Have a wonderful day!
I have extra trays
It is easier to use a large plastic tray and dump everything into it.
True! But without airflow, it takes longer to dehydrate. But either way, this is a nice easy project, and well worth it.
Have a 10 tray, dehydrator
That is awesome! Since recording this, I bought two more dehydrators. One is another Nesco, so the trays from both fit together. Can stack up to 12. My other is a Cosori, that fits 6 trays. Since it's a box dehydrator, I can't expand it. But at least I have a lot of options!
I saw on another you tube video when cutting onions, put a couple wet paper towels on the corner of your cutting board, cut onions, no more years!!!
Tina, thanks for the tip. I'm going to have to give that a try!
I mean i did get an answer from google but i doubt GOOGLE ever done the actual process lol ... im looking for real numbers
Hmmmmmm…another video I watched said you should blanch onions first or they will take days to dehydrate and will not rehydrate properly.
This is why it's best to give it a try yourself. I've never blanched onions and have had good results with both dehydrating and rehydrating them. What I recommend is doing a small amount the first time to see what works well for you.
@@StockingMyPantry TY…GREAT advice! 💕
Why don't you pour the onions into a bowl and then use a measuring cup to put them into the jar that why your not usei g your hand
I'm all ears waiting for the important info ........
no one ...
the video : time to start skippping 😂😂😂😂 oh lord .... please conversion in terms of weight
