❤Love seeing how Florences indirectly honoring how your mom brought you guys up (in contrast, as a boomer who hated school, Waialua High, … ditched to surf or staring out window day dreaming … as my parents not present and abusive, so ocean was my only amazing grateful refuge) … and why I have loved seeing thru you guys what a great job your mom did! WHY I so love you guys! You guys are the wayshowers to new generations coming up ❤ Great blessings to your mom 🌈🥰 And have loved checking out John’s out there of him mind art videos … sooo much creativity … as a great balance to being a huge athelete. And loving hearing these great memories for all of you … 😂… lots of awesome wisdom John has realized for himself

The mention by John of competing with Kelly for so many years brought me back to the fact they were a big reason why my wife and I moved from Seattle to Hawaii. I was a Florida surfer (2nd Light & The Streets in Cocoa Beach) and of course, I was a Kelly fan. So when my wife got us a free trip from Seattle to Hawaii in 2011, I said ok, but it had to be during Pipe (which we drove to every day from Honolulu and saw every heat from start to finish)...and so we got to see Kelly and John in their Quarterfinal Heat 2 matchup. I told my wife (a Seattle girl who had never before seen surfing) that these two were The Best and The Future Best and that this was an epic matchup. It was a great heat, Kelly winning on, I think, his last wave. And so between the crowd roaring on every wave, and the high quality of surfing in big Pipe waves, she said, "now I know why surfing means so much to you." Between that amazing week of surfing and then the next week which we spent fishing for o'io on Moloka'i, we decided to move to Moloka'i, which we did in 2015...so thank you John...and thanks to Nate and Koa and team for these truly enjoyable podcasts...Dal J

I learned from mixed martial arts and other sports, Navy missions and maneuvers, that the key to performing at your best, after and aside from the work to develop the skills, is to be completely relaxed, getting into that zone..Which is the hardest battle, it's really you battling yourself, and whoever masters their mind the most complete, can perform the best when it counts..When it's life and death, you can get into slow motion mode, when your senses catch every detail, which is next level freaky...

This was hands down the best ever interview I've ever heard with John. And every second of it was interesting from all of them. Like hearing John's perspective on no longer starting at pipe. (Although he didn't go as far as I would have and said what a joke that one day win a title thing is). And I've always wondered how he really felt after that title. It seems like it's similar for many people. Like he and Tyler went back to back, then she was I'll and John was injured for so long. And Medina seems to be struggling with it. Kelly, I think just thrives on winning even more than surfing. Like the way he basically got back in the game to beat Andy. Or for awhile seemed to make John that focus. It made me a little sad when they talked about how they all hung out all the time -- I know those must have been some of the best times for them. And the bike story was hilarious. I hope John stays healthy this year. Having him on tour is the only reason I watch it. Once he's out, I don't watch the rest of the comp. He was so switched on at pipe. The judges screwed him on that one. Oh and when they were talking about great heats John has been in, I wish someone had brought up the last heat Taj Burrow ever surfed professionally -- with John at cloudbreak. I think that was my favorite heat ever because the great waves were nonstop and both of them were so switched on it was insane. I go back and watch that often. I can tell that John is in it for the surfing this year, like he said, just trying to let go and really surf at your peak freely. I'd love to see that strategy win instead of some of the guys who are much more into winning than surfing, including playing stupid games with hassling and blocking.
Great job koa and Nate on an A+ interview

What John and Nate were referring to with respect to education is known as "experiential learning" which is a child's education that supports each individual child's interests and inclinations.
In ancient Hawai'i children were apprenticed or tutored to kumu who instructed them in their area of interest by having them follow and observe their daily routine.

Wow just amazing. loved the part about education! Actually, the whole thing was education. I am alot older to hear you talk about Kelly was mind blowing. I remember him at 16 years of age, one day sitting under a lean too with Hogen boys and his brother in front of Pipe watching him at Eukai sand bar. I just knew I was watching a world champ in the stages. Life just fly's bye I remember all you kids running around now look at yah. I had a little run myself but in skiing. I was the 7th man for NCAA division 1, 4 years then assistant coach. Lot of those kids went to ski schools but walking on a division 1 school not a easy task being raised your whole life in Hawaii. Being Dyslexic on top of that, to hear you guys were just getting through high school and to see how you started in filming and camera's just wild. The vlogs, how you all started playing around with film. I too got into Photography before Covid sold 210 photos feels good. What your mom put you guys through most have no idea how hard it is to raise your kids on the North Shore. I was a Hawaii Kai brat myself. We all had our mentors, guys like Mike Garrity and women like Wendy Moore was mine when it came to learning breaks like Piko's and Kikos you guys must have had so many uncles Aunties to teach you the ropes. Love the podcast. You will sit back years from now with this footage and go wow we gave people a look at what it took to be a world champion most never get that. Thanks you!

Different styles, but one is a muse on waves and is part of the wave, while the other fights the wave. No one surfs like John Florence. About World titles. JJF would have 6 by now f not for injuries. Go see where he ranked when injured.

@@SasoCasablanca63 I’d argue Medina is more like MJ and JJF is way more like Lebron. Medina is just as completive if not more competitive than people people like MJ and Kelly Slater. Also Medina’s already been in 3 pipe masters finals and he didn’t grow up surfing the wave and definitely has the IT factor

One of your better podcasts super genuine and fun to listen to, keep it up guys. You should get a mic setup though the audio gets a little annoying when multiple people talking at once and harder to listen if not also watching.

You need to have Kelly on with John back for it. It would be the go back on comp vs free surf mindsets. Got to have Makua & Jamie too. Also it would be awesome to have Shane Dorian on with him going from comp to Hollywood making “In God’s Hands” to being the GOAT of big wave surfing.

Nathan, you probably won't see this but if you do try reading the book "Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World" by David Epstein. It's mainly researched based and contradicts your brief thoughts on schooling. Simply put, it may give you a different perspective on education.

Thanks for posting this. It is a fascinating topic. I will check out that book. I would argue that many careers are simply not understandable at a young age, and so kids need to develop in a broad sense educationally to get to a point where they can ever find those careers.
There is a book called "The Goldmine Effect" by Rasmus Ankersen and I have seen how kids can develop incredibly in a specialized academy environment (in this case soccer). But if they do that to such an extent that they don't play other sports, they often lack physical development skills that would have contributed to their specialty. So good programs encourage multisport ABCs.
There is also the aspect of early vs late developers, and that can be in various ways, but the big one in sport is physical (even just timing of growth spurt). Often there is a bias towards early developers, when sometimes late developers, when trained equally and not filtered out of the system due to size, are superior long term.
I think there is a balance between supporting kids in what they enjoy, but also encouraging them to become broadly educated. That way, if and when their interests change, they can adapt and still draw from what they learned in other areas.

@@vanmelum I think finding the right balance between depth and range is key. If I had exclusively developed based on my 10 year old interests, I would have become a professional football player. I didn't even discover surfing until my 20's and it is much more engaging for me now than football. And I sure didn't have any interest in quantum mechanics when I was 10, haha. If I were to ask most of my peers in science and engineering if they thought they'd be working on what they are working on now when they were 18, in most cases the answer would be "no, didn't even know it existed". For academic pursuits, a lot of development happens at the university level. Not for everyone, but it would be a shame to close the door early imho. I'm glad I didn't become an NFL player.

Your views on education are not completely unfounded, but please consider a few things when discussing it: 1. You actually have very limited education, and zero experience in teaching, 2. You are incredibly fortunate to be gifted with talent levels that that less than 1% of all people have, and 3. You were very fortunate to find a means of earning a living by doing your favorite thing. This is not an option for most people.
That being said, I completely understand the idea of supporting what kids are interested in, but the reality is that kids are immature and not ready to make life determining decisions. This is the idea behind a comprehensive education. Even if one is not an expert in a field, knowing something about many things gives kids experiences and a base of knowledge that can help them make decisions later in life and hopefully sort through the bull sht so prevalent online and in the media. Super stoked that you have been able to carve out a living and become one of the greatest surfers of all time, but don’t ever forget how blessed you are and that the rest of us have to find a way to carve out our own success with far less ability and opportunity. Good luck to you all, and keep exploring the idea of education.

I dig the casual set up but the amount of echo is really distracting when trying to hear different people speak.
