  • With its blistering 1/4,000th of a second minimum shutter speed, advanced metering system, and generally good performance, the FA presents cost-conscious film users a viable alternative to the FE2. Much of the way that modern cameras meter scenes originated in the FA. The first matrix-metering camera, the FA delivers consistently well-metered and well-exposed images in complex lighting, with difficult subjects, and in difficult conditions. As one of my friends said of the FA, 'the name means F***ing Awesome."

    I am on the hunt for a nice FA now. You managed to answer many of my questions with this video. Thanks!

    Thanks Dave, this video (part one) has help me understand the mechanics. I have a Nikon FG-20, which is nice and at a very reasonable price for someone who is starting out in film as my digital has sat for years due to me not wanting to sit in front of a computer and load, edit etc just like my iPhone pics 😂 So I decided if I wanted to do this, then back to film and do the whole process start to finish. Taking pics, developing negatives and now in a Dark Room Lab class and LOVING it. I’m out shooting more due to this class as I get to produce my work good and bad ahaha at the end. I’ve ordered the FA from Japan and it should arrive today. Super excited!!!!! i also have a Minolta T201 which is heavier hence going to Nikon but it’s still a great camera. Born in the 70s, I just love film. Digital can create beautiful images but I agree with you, about film teaching you so much. Just like standard car drivers, I believe are more in tune with their car than automatic drivers 😂 I’m now an automatic driver but my rules for standard, are still there and used!

    One thing people don't mention much is how sweet the titanium shutter sounds. Also the advance lever is smoother in its action than even the Nikon F3 in my opinion.

    I have 2 Nikon FA'S , one I bought in 1985 with an MD-16 motor drive which no longer works and the other in New oldstock condition in April 2021. I thought my older FA was no longer operational and after I cleaned the battery contact found that it works.
    I've had both out and loaded with B&W and color film. Both work very well and all my Nikon lenses, including new glass work with both FA'S.

  • @williampower2333
    @williampower2333 9 років тому +2

    Dave;a few points! When in M mode,you only have CW[no Matrix]metering! As for "erratic",in A&S mode,the"Cybernetic Override"[great name for a Heavy Metal band-hehe!]kicks in, if the set values are not useable! Also,the metering cell, at the bottom of the mirror-box,is ONLY for TTL-OTF flash control! It shuts off the flash in TTL mode when the necessary shedload of"photons"has hit the film! The metering cells are all in the view-finder around the eyepiece-that's why you use the blind to stop stray light messing up the readings!

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  9 років тому

      William Power Got it. That makes sense about the camera cell. I couldn't figure out why it was that the FA, with the cell there, had less OTF capabilities than either the OM-2N or LX, both of which were older.

    When you came to the point in the video where you described production issues with the FA, I immediately thought of the Tesla Model X! Maybe you should do a review of that. Overall though, a very fine overview and review.

    I had one of these in art school (early 80's) and used it all the time until a few years ago when I moved and lost track of it. I found it recently and tried things out and the film winder is stuck , which is why I'm searching around on yt. Great video on the old FA !

    Nikon FA was my first Nikon body and I still use it today as my second camera to my F4. I got my used FA back in 2002 and it is still going strong. So, I must have got a 'good' reliable FA or a FA that was taken care of by its previous owner.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  9 років тому +1

      tmway84 I think that most of the FA bodies that are still running today are good bodies. I suspect that most if not almost all of the faulty, early bodies were either repaired or have long since been reused for parts.

    @Davidhancock you actually got the meter selection button the wrong way round (in part 1 and part 2 videos), when pushed in and tuned with the red mark showing is the setting for the automatic multi-pattern metering (metrix) not the centerweighted ref: Nikon FA the manual. Other than that I'd enjoyed both videos so much so I just got one in near perfect condition. But the price of these are on the increase.

      The prices have definitely gone up, but I just got my second one (can't live without at least one FA) from Japan in almost new condition for what I consider a reasonable price, including FedEx shipping. I thought an FE2 would be a sufficient backup to my beloved old brassed FA, but I really just want to shoot my FA (or two together).

    • @Skux720
      @Skux720 Рік тому +1

      This is incorrect. The manual explains that when the button is in the out position it is in matrix metering mode. When pushed in, or pushed in and locked so the red mark appears, it uses center-weighted metering.

    Hi David, thank you so much for this video! Very informative!
    I just found this camera buried in a load of my dads old stuff. The shutter was out of place and a bit dented.. but in place.. and the mirror is stuck in the up right position and won’t stay down.. do you know how I’d go about fixing the mirror, and will the shutter condition make this unusable? Wanting to make the switch from Digital and am absolutely clueless! Thank you!

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  3 роки тому +1

      Hmm. For the mirror, do you have batteries in the camera?
      The shutter could go either way, usable or not. If the leaves are all in the proper track and if the damage doesn't allow light through, it could still work. It is possible to realign the leaves (the fix old cameras channel has a video on this) if they're not currently aligned correctly.
      As for the mirror, that's more concerning. That could indicate a problem with the mirror mechanism or electronics. If the camera has batteries and start operating correctly, then there's no issue.

    • @Oh__nO
      @Oh__nO 3 роки тому

      @@DavidHancock The leaves are now in place so hopefully that will work…
      Ive put new batteries in and it won’t switch on so seems like it’s an electrical fault, or both! Taking it to a camera shop to have a look at as I can’t get the base plate off! Thank you for your reply!

    I broke my ASA/ISO lever while watching this video :( I would say this camera is very difficult to use, but it is my first. Hello, I purchased an f-801 but the battery holder is broken and it has a lot of white corrosion inside. How can I clean it?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  4 роки тому +1

      You'll need some distilled white vinegar and cotton swabs. Vinegar is an acid and the battery goo is an alkaline. Mixing them will neutralize and remove the alkaline goo. So get more cotton swabs than you think you need and a dish for the vinegar. Wet one side of the swab, apply it to the good, let it foam, dry it with the dry side of the swab. Repeat as needed until it's all gone. Then clean the surfaces with rubbing alcohol or distilled water to remove the vinegar, which could damage the metal if it's left on (even dry) for a long time.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  6 років тому

      Assuming that the batteries are in correctly (I assume the photo shop knows how to do it, but one never knows), then it's easily an electronics issue. A good repairman could let you know if it's fixable.
